tbh warriors are very very far from being useless… maybe in 8 lvl you got a wrong impression.

As I play both warrior and thief I can say warrior is more useful in PvE then in PvP. Frankly, 1v1 you will have a hard time as a warrior, because the things you can do are easily predicted (and thus evaded).

Thief is pretty much the other way around. Easier to get semi-good in PvP, but harder to do so in PvE. Apparently, if you spec your thief right, you can do high level fractals (which are the hardest dungeons to do in this game). But overall, warrior seems to bring a bit more to a group then a thief. Lots of people will disagree, but they are really awesome whereas I am just a casual PvE player.

I guess the classes that perform extremely well in both PvE and PvP are the elementalist, closely followed by the mesmer.

I only state my opinion unless stated otherwise.

I’ve been playing a thief since launch (yet I’m still level 49 haha). From a pve standpoint, I personally find that bursting is really good (dagger/dagger pistol/pistol, I don’t tend to have a problem at all in pve). However, as I’ve read on the forums (and somewhat agree with), pre 30 you’ll struggle slightly.
In regards to dungeons, you do have some pretty good utilities but you need to coordinate well with your team beforehand to make sure they go as planned. However, they’ve nerfed stealth so that agro still applies so I’ve yet to see how that plays out now.
Any build where you have pistol as the offhand weapon gives you an interrupt skill and a “yay you missed me” skill :p

In terms of pvp, I can only say what I’ve read, but generally your job is to get in, burst them down, get out. Again I recommend using your interrupts and bleeds as much as possible.

Hope that helped.

Someone in my guild once said WvW was the same at lvl 12 as lvl 80. Well that was a load of rubbish the early levels are far too early to judge and after playing a thief since pre-launch it takes time to learn about any class. As for the thief being played – its fun edge of your seat type stuff, I think other classes would be more straight forward hence I’ve never been tempted to play another – its all about keeping moving and dancing about and reactions are important. Gw2 never ceases to amaze me that when lag isn’t happening the gameplay is so arcade like and fast.

Assuming you wear all green level 12 gear at level 12, the scaling works so it’s like being 80 in full 80 greens. (sans traits) You can be somewhat competitive. The problem is that you’ll level in wvw that you will need new gear constantly.

Look up Sannys warrior vids on youtube. T3HSanny is his user name. I think he’d disagree. Anyway, at level 8 you’re not going to get a complete grasp or feel for any char.

Yea, Warriors are very very very very useless. Maybe you should try to get one to lv80 or just go check warrior section

I don’t pve much but the times I did I can say warrior is cake and thieves, well it just horrible, not that they are bad but I just couldn’t stand it for some reason

PvP wise, like how someone said about warriors, they can be very predictable sometimes, where as a thief, even a typical backstab build, can have alot of improvising involved so it keeps it more exciting for me playing mind tricks

Played well, any profession is good in PvE or PvP, however these professions do have some innate strengths and weaknesses that can make them better suited to PvE or PvP.

A thief’s high burst damage and escape options for example are ideal in a PvP setting to quickly finish someone off, but in PvE high sustained damage and staying power is generally more useful. If we look at a warrior in PvP then they have some limitations, such as poor condition removal. Of course these depend on the build but the few ‘viable’ warrior builds generally suffer from similar weaknesses.

In general I would say that thief is the least suited for PvE, or at least it is one of the most difficult to play. In a difficult fight on my thief i have to pay attention to what enemies are doing and constantly move and evade to survive. On my guardian i have to remember to use my heal skill :P For PvP I would just suggest trying anything that piques your interest in sPvP and see what your enjoy.

I’m going to go a bit against the grain here and state that I think that any profession could fit your needs here. Really, generally speaking, all of the professions are about (if not completely) equal in their own various styles, to the extent of my experience with all of them.

For example- you want something good in PvP and PvE? Mesmers- they can run fantastic, nearly-unkillable clone builds that will serve you particularly well in PvP, although they might take a while for you to be able to access in PvE. Engi’s- they have some pretty awesome options too, especially for newer players. Seriously- reach level five, grab a grenade kit from them, and murder everybody. It’s awesome.

As for warriors- don’t listen to what people say here on the forums about them being “bad”. That’s not true. To the extent of my knowledge, they’re heavy-hitting DPS’ers that will probably crush you if you don’t know what you’re doing. They’re also fairly easy to start off with as a profession. That doesn’t make them invincible, though. A good thief, for example, can time his evades, stealths, and, if you’re like me, Infiltrator’s Strikes and Shadow Returns almost flawlessly to rip a warrior apart at the seams. Of course, good warriors will have a nice variety of blocks, pushbacks, and timing on their strikes to counter-attack… And so on and so forth.

So, really, I think it depends more on how you want to play. Here are a few questions I would like to ask you to help you choose a profession:

1. Do you want to play more of a support role or a soloist role?

2. Do you want to play aggressively, defensively, from a range- what?

3. If you could describe a strategy to me that you would like to play with, what would that strategy be?
