Stealth and run. Pick your battles, so you’re always fighting with an advantage. Also, you only get the revealed debuff if you attack while in stealth, so if you become visible through stealth running out, you can re-enter stealth immediately. This means you can weave back and forth, bombing with Cloak and Dagger while being nearly completely invisible.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Unless you absolutely need to hold a 2+v 1 to give your team an advantage elsewhere, but you’ll usually won’t live long enough to make it useful, usually as in 99% of the time.

However, if you’re an evade tank feel free to stay as long as you’re able, because you should be able to live plenty long enoug.

Build in some traits that help with the situation. By that I mean, aoe blinds, dodges, or stealth heals. The more the better, so long as you can produce enough damage.

Irrespective of traits:

Damage overcomes all. However, try to pack an interrupt if you can. You want to be able to stop heals, else its going to take too long to thin the numbers.

Use downed state foes as bait. What they see as helping their friends, you should see as “the place to deeps”.

If you are part of a group, but still outnumbered— there is an ebb and flow: whoever they are focusing should be kiting, or otherwise trying to occupy all of the enemies attention for as long as they (safely) can. The rest of your party will switch to dragging down the weakest target at the moment.

Prioritize the weakest. Know who has blown their cooldowns. Know what to do when they “counter”. So if they are stacking protective AOE damage on top of themselves/their wounded friends, leave that area and ranged dps them. If they are channeling a big heal or big upcoming, telegraphed deeps, interrupt and apply pressure, etc.

Record yourself and then watch “gametape”. Be self critical, and get better!

Make sure your enemies are distracted. That’s by far the most helpful thing when running a Thief which is why it works so well to run with a tanky partner.

This. Let’s say you are solo roaming in wvw; most of the time while you are outnumbered you won’t beat a decent enough group with a good setup especially 3 thieves using D/P and P/D, they will focus on you with all their Burst and Condis and even if you manage to down one they will just res each other. -.-

Otherwise pick the easiest target out of the group and hope for the best.

Look at the comp you are engaging then use your head :-) , There is no point in engaging a group of 3 that are all guardians is there ?

Just pick your fights as other have said , what i like to do sometimes is engaging the group to see just how good/bad the players are, if they are good/decent and have 2 more than you then you don’t want to stay in that fight but if they are terribad then by all means get your loots.

What I try to do is spread out the enemies and make sure I have lots of room to work. What’s even better is if they’re distracted. Thieves guild is great for outnumbered fighting.

But basically spread them out so that it’s harder for them to defend each other. Go for the squishiest targets first. (Eles, mesmers, thieves, etc) and also the most dangerous. Watch out for other thieves, too. Play VERY carefully, don’t take risks. Move where they least expect you to move.

Poke them to see who is the weakest target and then just be patient. See what you can steal to use to apply pressure. Keep calm and don’t waste your initiative. And no matter what, don’t rush yourself…

Keep the enemy in an “imaginary” circle. Fight the enemy putting yourself outside that circle. The middle of that circle is like the Bermuda triangle. Im an evasion thief so in my case a stealth every now and again helps. Due to my constant jumping and dodging Its kinda hard to target me via clicking. People that use auto targeting or tab, fight them near mobs (wvw) that makes it really hard to target me. General good positioning is a must and a well positioned player is kinda op.

Make sure you use your steal effectively, for the right skills I mean like the necro fear or ranger healing seed or even warrior for the reflect.

Try not to use your utilities ever unless you HAVE too.

Resetting fights… if need be do it. To reset I usually use sword 2 run over to some mobs(or other players if no mobs) stealth on em and tele back then tele the opposite direction of my foes or where ever I see fit. A good time to reset is if all your cooldowns are gone and the enemy is NOT about to die.(use your own judgment on who has the “potential” advantage here)

Watching the entire battle field is a must for thieves. Always be aware of your surroundings meaning.. People in the current fight friend or foe, watch there skills and acknowledge them… all of them and react accordingly. If your ranger friend busts out a healing spring blast it! If an enemy necro goes into death shroud get ready to interrupt his siphoning. ALSO watch for incoming players, that bs gets you killed. And also watch the health pools and buffs and conditions of everyone in the immediate fight. All these watching tactics only require a seconds glance go invis and look around if you must.

Be smart. By this i mean smarter than the enemy. By that I mean outplay them. Trick them into thinking your doing one thing and do something totally different. Go one way invis and go a totally different direction. If you are a SA thief id invis before I start any skill with a long cast time like hide in shadows.

Shortbow! Saves lives especially if you have high passive initiative regen.

Dodges! Treat it like a utiliy, only when you need to. Acrobatics thieves however need to constantly dodge for the +10% damage buff.

And by all means don’t give them any slack! Go super tryhard beast mode on them. just don’t blow everything for one burst. But more importantly have fun! I love my thief!

The class master. I enjoy all of the professions.

if you see enemies with the same tag just dont as they are probably on coms
if they running close to each other and moving close you will have hard time as they focus fire on one location around them
if you wanna jock just cnd in and out of stealth till you and them get bored

  1. Use stealth to look at the situation, surroundings and count how many people you’re dealing with
  2. Based on your assessment, choose fight or flight
  3. If you choose flight, pull out a shortbow and bail
  4. If you choose fight, use your surroundings to your advantage. LOS is better than stealth.
  5. Surround your enemy in a big circle, making them spread out
  6. Take down the weakest one as fast as you can, it will guarantee at least 1-2 rezzer to try to rez that downed one while you pick on someone else that is not the downed or the rezzer. Forcing them to rez their ally means less people are trying to kill you.
  7. Rinse and repeat

If I can provoke my enemies to follow me no matter the cost I already count the fight as won. Breaking los and target is crucial as well as dynamic positioning in stealth. The only type of outnumbered fight that I give up on after 1-2 minutes ++ is when I see that my enemies pack up tight and wait for my move. Don’t you EVER fall for that. Distraction and surprise are your friends here.
Also, keep up pressure. As a matter of fact, I’ve made an experiment. For the last two days I was running without SA but 10/30/0/0/30 SD/DP. Most of the time people couldn’t keep up with damage that I dealt to them. 1v2 was completely manageable without heavy kitting while during 3<= I had to go occ several times. What I’m trying to say is that by playing aggressively and quickly you make your opponents panic and as follows leave them more room for error.
