1vs1 or even 1vs2 ?
Different weapons do well against different classes 1v1. But most roamer type 1v1 builds use the greatsword/axe+shield, hammer/greatsword or hammer/sword+shield. All of which have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Rifle is a relatively weak 1v1 weapon unless you are mostly glass cannon because it is easy to dodge.
I’ve seen longbows used and truthfully they aren’t that bad due to the bleeds, burns, immobilize and combo fields.
In 1v2s hammer type builds with a lot of CC tend to do the best. But 1v2s are extremely difficult to win even if you play your cards right against any sort of competent enemy. If you won a 1v2 it usually means you probably fought at least 1 uplevel or just inexperienced/bad players.
Most thieves I have encountered really aren’t all that difficult. Dagger mainhand thieves are pretty easy to deal with. When they go invis all you need to do is run around swinging your weapon in a sporadic and unpredictable manner so it will be much harder for the thief to backstab you and so you can get some free hits. Try to anticipate where they are going to appear and dodge/block. If you can CC a thief down it is pretty much over for the thief.
Condition type thieves are a little harder to deal with but the same principles apply. A good trait to invest in is spiked armor so thieves eat a lot of their damage. CC them and most will go down pretty quick.
Make sure to have at least 2,700 armor because any less than that and a thief can just eat you up.
Mesmer’s are very difficult to match up against and sometimes it is futile. One such build is a phantasm mesmer. This is where you bring out your berserker/rifle and hope they will get one shot by your volley or killshot.
Shatter mesmers are a bit easier but more often than not you will lose due to their invulnerabilities, stun breaks, teleports, burst and kiting ability.
Mesmers are probably the greatest counter to a warrior, in team fights probably a necro.
Greatsword+axe/shield is probably the best 1v1 build imo with 10/20/0/10/20 (the last 10 points are kindof debatable). 1vX though this build fails unless they stand close together in your hundred blades. You can kite and take them one at a time when one gets ahead of the other etc with this however. It is also the only way that you’re going to kill a bunker build unless they’re terrible. Also, one mistake generally means a repair bill.
Hammer+Sword/x generally shines 1vX, but there are a number of builds that hard counter it. Blinds and to a lesser extent weapon evades severely reduce the hammers ability to lay hate (stability isn’t really an issue despite what people say imo).
Hammer+GS plays in a similar manner to the first option, but it provides CC in place of the ability to insta-kill things. This becomes laughably ineffective when cripple/chilled though.
Jangeol – WvW Warrior
1v1 – impossible against anyone who knows what they’re doing, you might have some luck at nubstomping.
1v2 – same rule as before. Don’t underestimate just how bad other players can be.
A lowly backstab/HS thief is the go to class for thieves, so expect inexperience. You might land a good hit on the poor squishy thief. A D/P Shortbow perma stealth thief will troll you into the ground, more experienced people roll with this, your best bet is to run.
As mentioned above shatter mesmers are a little more easy as its simply the go to build for newbies, however an experienced one will utterly destroy you. Even the most braindead player running phantasm build will beat you with little effort. Who knows maybe someday we will be strong enough to dress similar to a Mesmer and be one of their phantasms, or maybe even a ranger could tame us! Though I doubt we’d ever get that ‘OP’

gs, long bow and use your skills and dem aoes, you win.

I personally use full p/v/t armor w/ soldier runes, and a half & half of p/v/t and knights trinkets. weapons are axe/mace (one soldiers, one knights) and sword/warhorn (both p/v/t). Running triple shouts (For Great Justice, Shake It Off, On My Mark) and heal shout spec I can usually 1v1 just about anyone, and with the condition removal + heals on shouts I have sustain for days without having to actually rely on my heal skill too heavily.
Here are 2 similar builds I’m playing around with for 1v1 situations. I think i’m on to something here.
The first build is more damage and the second is more survivability. Both builds use Soldiers Amulet and rely on Fury and Might for increased damage. You have good sustainable health through banner regen, and Healing Signet. I know Healing Signet sucks, but so do the other 2 heals. You only really need to use the on use heal if your health is low enough to get bursted, or you have condis ticking. You want to grab your banner and try to kite your opponent until your heal comes back up in that situation. With these builds you also have good condition removal.
Pros
High Armor/Vit, Mobility, Condi Removal, Regen, Longbow range, Respectable damage, 2 immobilizes, No Bulls Charge + Frenzy bull dookie. Decent Endurance.
Cons
No Stability, No Invuln, Adrenaline and Damage ramp up time, Banner baby sitting. Healing Signet.
I encourage everyone to try this build, and improve on it if possible. After watching Teldos videos and cringing at the Warrior dueling videos, I decided to make something that could survive and still do damage.
