A Question about Warriors from a Squire
What’s your mainfocus ingame, PvE/WvWvW/sPvP?
If you want to avoid being a glass, then a low crit/high power&toughness build should be suitable for you. If you want to avoid gs, then the definite choice is the mainhand axe.
If I misunderstood you and just want some survivability paired with high damage you can achieve that aswell by not going full glass and getting a few pieces of survivability stats, that way you’ll get decent base critchance (around 30-35%), enough toughness so nothing would onehit you (1.3-1.5 is totally fine) and okish HP (you should aim around 20k with a crit focus damage build).
You can pair your axe up with various offhands:
Shield: for a good fast stun/interrupt and some damage mitigation from block
Mace: extra vulnerability stacking and an awesome frontal direction line knockdown
Warhorn: vigor/swiftness buff, weakness on enemies and removes some conditions from you
2nd Axe: kinda useless fury buff (we get it from everywhere), but a good AoE option from axe 5 and good looks from running dualwield.
Sword: doesn’t really complement the axe that well, but could have it’s uses from block/adrenaline gain.
For 2nd weaponset use whatever feels natural to you and what you feel that you’re missing from your main set. Go to Heart of the mists (top row sword icons), buy all the different weapons you can use from the pvp weapon vendor (they’re free) and just equip and play around with them on the golems to see what you feel comfortable with. Great place to try out your future planned build aswell.
For PvE all you need to survive is basically adrenal health on full adrenaline and healing signet on passive. Will make you lazy though.
Mending is a great choice in condition heavy fights and vs unexpected burst. Thanks to the recent changes to healing surge it’s a very good option aswell. You really can’t go wrong related to PvE/dungeons, just take what feels comfortable for you. I’d suggest always carrying a ranged option with you though. Even if it just sits in your bag. It’s good to be able to adapt to the situation on the go.
Rifle is a strong single target/direct damage (bleed on autoattack is just a bonus) weapon, while longbow shines more with it’s combofield/finisher and AoE damage (not so good as main weapon, but a very good 2nd set).
Utility wise: shouts/banners/some signets are all good choices, but stay flexible and make sure you have enough choices to adapt to different needs. Bolas are one of the must have CC skills to unlock imo.
This is all from a PvE viewpoint and we’re very strong there.
For WvWvW the exact build/setup doesn’t really matter either, you’re just required to have a bit more toughness/vitality gear and a ranged weapon in your bag atleast.
sPvP is a totally different subject and there are some good discussions about the state/viable options for a warrior in this and spvp section.
Anyways, I hope you’ll enjoy warrior playstyle and we’ll have another fellow comrade in our ranks. Feel free to contact me or other people with questions ingame.
do a GS/axe or GS/rifle or axe/rifle spec if your focus is pve. to avoid the glass cannon (there is a learning curve), spec power/prec/toughness
Warriors have many good options at 60+ (except perhaps in SPvP). The issue isn’t weapon sets – it’s how you combine weapon sets with gear and spec. You have ample room to experiment while leveling, to see which mix suits your style. Here’s some general advice:
- Although we have many good spec options at higher levels, one spec absolutely blows all others out of the water until sometime in the 50’s. Load up on signets, grab the skill early in the arms tree that gives you +40 precision for each signet, and enjoy a ridiculous crit rate for a while. You can try all different weapon and gear combos with this and still survive
- The three mainhand weapons (sword, axe, mace) all have different strengths and playstyles. Axe is probably the most reliable for decent damage in all situations, but sword users are very, very hard to kite in WvW.
- For offhands, don’t assume that a shield is the best defense. Warhorns can be traited to convert conditions to boons and also offer an AoE weakness on a short cooldown. Shields do offer missile reflect and an interrupt, which can be situationally very useful. As for offhand weapons, I don’t think any of them offer as much as a warhorn or shield, but opinions vary!
- If you like two-handers, then greatsword and hammers offer quite different playstyles. You just have to try them
Keep yourself outfitted in greens, spec for signets first and try all the weapon combos as you level. You’ll figure out what’s fun for your style.

Simple rule, you want to have a challenge? Pick this class and actually know what your role is supposed to do. Otherwise pick an easier class to play.
P.S Forum’s idea of balanced = broken, and balanced = underpowered.

I’m really starting to wonder if you are Rush Limbaugh IRL. Your logic and viewpoints sound just like his do…
