I absolutely love WvW roaming. Just 1 problem, most roamers are mesmers and thieves. Speaking to pro warrior roamers out there, how do you actually close the gap and land a hit. Everytime I GS5 in, they evade/shadowstep/stealth/teleport away. Earthshaker has too much castpoint to actually be viable. Sure cripple from gs4 and ham3 might work, they just kite out of it with their mobility. Running full zerk means i dun have tat much survivability, one steal into backstab with HS and I am dead. Pop endure pain u say? sure.. let me just stealth and wait out your four seconds. I never had problems in PVP thou. Only in WVW roam i get murdered instantly. Yet i see videos on youtube and twitch of warriors taking group of 3 mesmers and thieves (tap dat mouse). Do i suck? or do the mesmers/thieves in those vids suck. I really like the gameplay of warrior and roam, but these 2 cant seem to go hand in hand together. Either die horribly of just do PvE and kill boring bosses-.-

Hey Yeti, can’t help you with mesmer but I can give you a few tipps on thieves, since i used to play GS/H warrior and I also play thief
the best thing to do in a 1v1 situation is to keep constant presure on him, don’t give him any time to think and make him blow his skills early
btw you can fake the Hammer F1 by starting it and then hitting (put weapon away) if you bound that to a button, meaning you start the animation, he’ll dodge, shadowstep, blind etc, you canced it (skill has 4sec cooldown, no big deal) he wasted a skill or a dodge making him an easier target in the long run
it will also help to start the fight in a relativly normal speed and then suddenly step it up a notch or two, throwing him off and getting him hysterical
In addition to that, when fighting a DD thief, know that he MUST get close to you or a mob to stealth (unless he uses blinding powder or shadow refuge) so if you know he’s close use Hammer 4, he wasted 5 ini (a big chunck) and is knocked down
DP players mostly start with #5 then #2 to gain stealth
when you see the blind field and you have a stun or knockdown of your hammer ready use it NEAR the field, not in it!
Most thieves are very squishy post patch because they didn’t get the memo that full zerker gear isn’t viable anymore
so to sum it all up, keep constant pressure, you dictate the fight, don’t let him toy with you, fake pushes and stuns to make him waste skills, lock him down once for good and he’s done for

Shortly put, bait stunbreaker and when shadowstep/blink is on cooldown, try to catch the thief/mesmer after a dodge with a bull’s charge+ hundred blades. If you can predict steal or mirror blade blink combo, and manage to whirlwind out of it, that’s a lot of damage avoided and a lot of your damage landed.

Also, zerk stance can help with blinds, your weapon range is greater than the radius of a blinding powder field so positioning can help, and use your auto to clear a blind.

Both classes can be tricky for a warrior to fight. Of the two of them, a well played mesmer is the trickiest. Fortunately, there are a lot of poorly played mesmers atm… still dangerous, but not impossible.

EDIT: Also, I have trouble believing TDM defeated 3 conpetently played mesmers (or even thieves) post patch. Definitely don’t feel about about your own skill here, just keep working at it like the rest of us.

It’s also worth pointing out mesmers nowadays are running mantra of distraction for a 5 second CD 1.25s daze/stun with confounding suggestions. Warriors have extremely well telegraphed and often quite slow attacks so interrupting them is a piece of cake.

Try to LoS the mantra, zoom the camera out, if you see a GS flying at you then dodge. I guarantee you’ll have messed up their burst for 8-10s possibly more. There’s a lot of bad mesmers trying this one trick pony. Unfortunately there’s also a hilariously imba torch trait they run which can get down to a 13s CD on a 6s stealth which makes them live longer than they should.

If you can chain stun the mesmer when their blink and decoy are done you can wreck them. Also rampage is great for just ploughing through clones and murdering mesmers. It’s easier in PvP due to point capture mechanics and how the mesmer can get the kill but lose the fight essentially.

^^ all good advice, but careful with rampage. A mesmer can easily kite this and/or mitigate the big hits via blinds and distortion unless you catch them by surprise.
