Hey everyone!
I’m in a bit of a dilema, and need a bit of advice regarding the Warrior class.

But first I’d like too say, one of the main reasons that persuaded me to buy this game was the amount of variation the first game had, and from what I had heard previously, this had as well.

For example after playing World of Warcraft for so long I came to realize there was no real customization in your character and how you play. Every hunter would use the same weapon, every Warrior etc etc.

However with Guild Wars 2 you have a different pallet of skills for almost every different weapon choice, which is fantastic! Makes the game fresh and always exciting.

However, recently I have noticed that despite the massive amount of customization in the game, for the Warrior at least. You are still told to use one specific type of weapon (Greatsword) if you wished to be a successful addition to your group, because it has the overall best DPS (more so than dual anything or even hammers).

I’m not sure how much truth there is in this but, that’s my question;
Is this game REALLY that inter-changeable?

The greatsword is only really usable for solo pve.

In any other instance the other weapons are better.. and for solo pve, any weapon is viable really, because the open world isn’t that difficult.

No one wants to see a greatsword warrior join a dungeon group or a pvp team for example, you don’t contribute anything with a greatsword in pvp, and in dungeons your team mates just end up having to revive you all the time, and you don’t contribute anything lying on the ground.

I do have a greatsword build for dungeons, but it involves a lot of toughness and no critdamage.. so no 15K hundred blades.

That’s the sort of answer I was really hoping for!
I was getting worried thinking that there would be very little point or gain in using anything but the Greatsword.

Yeah it’s quite the opposite, there isn’t much point in using the greatsword, certainly not the general 100blades signet build.

The hammer has a lot more auto attack damage than the greatsword, and very nice control skills, for example. With the hammer you can contribute in all game content, it’s a very solid weapon.

I do like using the greatsword, I just wish it wasn’t so useless in pvp.

Still greatsword isn’t bad in dungeons, as long as you stack a lot of toughness, so you don’t die everytime you try to use hundred blades. But going full offense and toting a rifle, piercing through 5 monsters at once with kill shot, is a lot more efficient. Your team doesn’t have to revive you all the time then since you’re standing at 1200 range.

Watch this video and see the true power of using different weapon sets, its abit melodramatic in the beginning but well worth the watch

I beg to differ,

I run dungeons all the time and I use a GS/rifle GS/Bow build for dungeons running a shouts healer/ might stacking build 0/0/25/30/15 and my GS 100B last hit alone does 6K dmg in AC lv35 dungeon. also always carry with you a decent compliment of weapons for different encounters, I myself always have with me exotic versions of: sword, mace, axe, rifle, bow, hammer and rifle.

So you see Konamacona it’s not just so much the weapon but also the build and the player skill that finally determines the viability of the weapon combinations.

Thanks for all the replies guys, each one was as I had hoped.
For the time being I’m going to stick to what I enjoy playing and if I seem to lack any sort of DPS I’m going to put it down to a lack of player skill and try to perfect it!

All successful Warriors use the glass cannon GS build, because the only thing that this class can be used for is the role of the roamer. And for that you need mobility and damage, both of which are exclusive to the greatsword.

Ok

I’ve tried almost every possible build in PvE, gotten dungeon master, and run arah a kittenon of times.

My experience in PvP is a lot less, but i’ve tried a few different builds out and seen what the pros run.

So here’s my opinion…

In PvE, it’s all about the greatsword or axe+mace and rifle. Yea you can use anything technically, but those are the best and there’s little reason to use the others due to the nature of PvE(lots of enemies resisting stun, little mobility involved in fights, etc…)

PvP is alot more varied. Yes, your standard tPvP warrior will use greatsword+axe/shield. However, the other weapon sets are still viable, and there’s actual reasons to use them unlike PvE.

use axe + mace // mace shield. and get good with it. you will never lose to a 100b warrior 1v1 and you will have way more control and just as much damage ( yes, axe 1 + frenzy is BIG dmg) your equivalent to 100b is bulls (frenzy WHEN THEY ARE KDd) then axe auto attack , then when they get up you hit mace 5 (another KD) and axe auto atk ftw. if that doesnt kill you swap to mace shield and stunlock them for a while untill they die. its the most fun ive had on my warrior. GS 100derp gets old fast.

GS = solo pve, a few noobs try using it in wvw and spvp because if 100 blades connects it can do massive damage, and works wonders on the “pseudo” level 80s with the green arrow (wearing level 10 gear and having no traits DOES make a big difference) but the reality for an experienced warrior is it lacks utility and controll for pvp… hammer, axe/warhorn, and axe/shield are really the most viable mele weapons for pvp purposes at a higher skill level. Mace also useful for tpvp.

Those of us using a GS at the endgame in WvW are often doing it for a different reason:
1) trying to farm badges of honor since damage done does apparently matter significantly here, not effective in taking objectives or moving a line (since you die) but will get you a few more of those impossible to get badges.
2) for mobility purposes of getting around the map
3) as a player “aggro generator” (in a very tanky spec trying to soak up hits) since sunrise tends to draw fire (brilliantly glaring greatsword in the middle of the night = giant “Hit Me!” sign)
