Hello there just switched from WoW and new to the game in general. I’m so used to having so many resources, but I can’t seem to find info on certain things:

1.) What is BiS for PvE/WvW?
2.) Best builds for PvE/WvW?

I know that a new patch just hit recently so info reflecting the new info would be great. Thanks ahead of time.

Your best bet is to take your time playing the story. You’ll get a chance to use all the skills that way and can find a build you like. Asking for the “best build” is unnecessary as everyone’s playstyle is different.

If you’re looking for best in slot items, anything that is exotic (orange coloured name), ascended (pink coloured name), or legendary (purple coloured name) will be the best in slot grade of items. Technically, ascended are better than exotics, but ascended stuff is generally more complicated to acquire since you can’t simply just buy or loot it from somewhere. Legendary is also the same grade as exotic, they’re just there for certain aesthetic purposes.

As a new player, you’ll want to aim at getting exotic equipment as your best in slot stuff, although you’ll want to get to level 80 first anyways. The extra stats offered by ascended stuff is not incredibly significant to exotics anyways, so it won’t have a profound effect on most encounters.

Greatsword is very common in PvE, so you might want to look into investing in one as well as a build that uses it at some point. But don’t feel like you absolutely need to use that and only that.

Unfortunately, there’s no good website that keeps track of these things like the PvX wiki back in GW1. As the previous poster said, you’ll have to play the game to see what kind of stuff sits well with you, and just keep asking people questions about things. I know some guilds will maintain forums that contain builds, and they’ll often help you out with your build if they’re focused on playing WvW content and such. The developers have some plans to implement some changes whereby getting access to builds will be easier, although we have no idea when such stuff will actually be put in game.

Also, just so you’re aware, WvW scales your character to level 80 so your stats compare to people who are actually level 80, but it’s only your base stats. If you don’t have a full set of level 80 exotic gear, your overall stats will still be inferior to someone who has such gear, so it can be tough to fight people in WvW until you have such gear. As such, if you do play WvW, don’t get discouraged simply because you’re a lower level character who can’t kill people yet, and try to travel around with other groups. It makes a big difference once you get your best in slot stuff.

EDIT: Another quick tip: you can go to the Heart of the Mists (the structured PvP lobby), which will allow you to play around with all the weapons, traits, and skills your profession can use, which can let you test skills out and help find a build that you like. There’s some things that work differently in sPvP than in PvE and WvW though, so just be aware of those.

Hey there. The big difference here vs WoW is there isn’t really BiS aside from the quality of gear you use. There are specific ins and outs to different builds, but as long as you have general MMO knowledge you should do pretty well on crafting your own. For example, all out DPS users will go for Power and Crit, as well as increased Crit Damage (at 80 this is Berserker’s gear) but have very low health, so some supplement their equipment with Power, Vitality, Crit Damage (at 80 this is Valkryie’s gear). The wiki has a list of the item attributes and names here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Item_nomenclature .

Since there isn’t really a standard holy trinity in GW2, it plays more like “Support”, “CC”, and “DPS”. Support is tanking, healing, buffing, reviving, etc. CC focuses on conditions not only for damage, but also stuns, cripples, immobilizes, knockback, etc. DPS generally focuses on pure skill damage and evasion due to their low hp. Nearly every class can fill any these roles specifically through builds, but they can provide a little bit of each anyway due to the nature of weapon skills.

I would suggest checking out http://en.gw2skills.net/ , especially the combo and mechanics section. They also have a very nice build editor/calculator. If you take any level character into Heart of the Mists (the PvP vendor/target dummy area, which can be accessed through the PvP tab) you will be boosted to lvl 80 while inside and can test out a build (or a reasonably similar build) while there as you can respec for free and get all sorts of stat equipment for use in PvP (sort of like the arena server on WoW). http://www.gw2db.com/skill-builds/warrior also has lists of builds people have submitted, but it doesn’t get updated much.

Aside from that though, as a general rule you should always run a condition cleansing ability in dungeons and WvW, and also a stun-breaking ability in WvW (basically your equivalent to WoW’s PvP trinkets).

If you have a specific role you want to fill or weapon you want to use, I’d be happy to help you create a build that you can tweak to your liking.

Edit: Almost forgot, Dulfy has a wonderful news and guide site, somewhat like MMO-Champion without the datamining http://dulfy.net/category/gw2/
