Axe?Sword?(PVP)
I play WvW a lot so I run GS (main) + sword / shield.
The sword is mostly used to get in and out (with mobile strikes) where most of the damage comes from the GS.
WvW- Sword for the mobility
Anything else- Axe for the damage

I have played Golradaer’s Spartan build which uses both – axe/mace & sword/shield. It’s a pretty fun build but lacks the mobility of the greatsword.
Sword. Always sword.
Axe lacks everywhere but damage.
Axe F1 is predictable and counterable by any good player.
Sword has mobility.
Sword has damage (all be it, not the best).
Sword has a cripple.
Sword has immobolize.
I’ve actually started using Sword + Axe build. Leap + Immobilize + Axe Whirlwind is amazing in PvP.

Both are equally good and will give you different things.
Flurry vs Evis
Flurry will lockdown your opponent which makes him either waste an immobreak or keep him standing for 4+ seconds which means he’s dead.
Evis is a gamble; it could crit for 14k or 5k, it could hit or miss/blocked/dodges… if it lands it’s most likely a win, if it doesn’t oh well.
Leap vs Cyclone
Leap gives great gap closer (or escaper) on low CD and triggers Mobile Strikes.
Cyclone gives you 4% more damage on your target.
Throw Axe vs Hamstring
Throw Axe has range so you’ll close gap sooner and can be used as an opener, while Hamstring can only be landed in melee but will last a lot more.
It all comes down to playstyle in the end, Sword gives you more failsafes, Axe gives you most burst.
sword mainhand, axe offhand and greatsword as weaponswap.
Focus on crit percentage and crit chance. Use Greatsword 2- 3 – swap- 2-5-f1 and you will have beaten most of everything. The only challenge left is to survive long enough to pull all that off. Also get some condition damage and get bleeds on crits. You’ll be able to stack 25 bleeds easy. Add to that the might on crit with greatsword trait and all your bleeds and hits will be doing even more damage.
