Axe/axe
Axe off-hand just isn’t that great, and 100B is extremely good in PvE situations. Axe/Mace + GS used to be okay with 100B → swap → Axe AA → swap → 100b, repeat, but these days going for damage traits outweighs the old benefits of Disc. + the swap rotation.
Axe/Shield + GS is still potent in WvW and SPvP, but PvE has been ironed out for a while now.
I have only ever found one use for Whirling Axe, and that’s with a sword/torch, sword/Axe hybrid build. Drop field> Swap > Whirling Axe. The burning was sort of insane, and the power is strong as well. My guildies call it My Burning Tornado build.
It is really fun, I need to try it out with the ne Adrenal chainch3es. it may just be viable.
There are quite a few reasons why GS remains the far superior choice.
They’d have to either increase the base axe damage by a great amount to justify running a dps warrior alongside the PS player in your party or in a solo scenario.
Finally move Axe Mastery from the Grand Master trait to allow it to synergize with Berserker’s Power.
Make Forceful Greatsword work with any warrior weapon.
Allow Dual Wielding attack speed to stack with quickness.
Add some utility to axes on either hand like reflects while whirling or anything useful like that.
And many more…
Mainhand axe has always been my favorite warrior weapon. Yet, there really is no reason to run it anymore in PvE.
Some players still run axes, argue that the damage is comparable to greatsword and close their eyes to all of the advantages GS gives them over axes outside of simply the damage component.
That is your own choice to make in the end.

My roommate is currently working on such a build… he’s realized he needs more sustain then his axe/axe zerker build gives him, so he’s toying with his options to get away from zerk… unfortunately I don’t think he’s found anything yet to satisfy him. I’ll be pointing him to this thread, though, in the hopes he can share or use ideas.

Hey,
Axe/ axe is insanely fun for power warrior. Probably the only way to go in pvp for yourt enjoyment.
I’ve been running this today in PVP. It is crazy fun.
I tend to run Axe-Axe on certain fights in the raid because of non-stop movement requirements and because I’m getting absolutely bored of GS attacks. Especially Vale Guardian’s kite phase makes it annoying to land a full 100B which means the fight boils down to just auto-attacking and bursting. Might not be as great DPS-wise but at least it adds some mobility, doesn’t require you to stand still every 6 seconds, and it’s a nice twist. Besides, Axe 5 destroys Pocket Raptors.
Axe offhand is so kitten bad. If they gave it a reflect and buffed damage just a tiny bit, then it would actually be usable even in PvP/WvW/
Thieves steal from warrirors and they get a reflecting axe whirl. Why don’t we have it?

I made that exact suggestion a few months before HoT launched and got flamed to an absurd degree by Thieves and Rangers frothing at the mouth that reflection on Axe 5 stepped on their toes.
It’s OP if Warriors have it, but it’s A-OK for Thieves and Rangers. That’s the verdict that ANet seems to be sticking with.
I currently run axe /axe in my pve build . The only build found useful to it though is glass cannon. This is were people argue. You do less damage then greatsword but you put the damage up alot faster. I went to aerodome with a friend and i put up less damage but i put it up alot faster then him. Speed can be necessary. It only depends if u want to run meta or if you want play your own play style. I love playing none meta because its no fun in my opinion to play with same build everyone else runs. That’s what in my opinion kills these games is everyone wanting run same thing and makes it over predictable.

You know that you can equip 2 weaponsets right? If you run axe axe as primary weaponset, then what the hell is your secondary weaponset? Just wondering

and… thats the reason why my frostfang rusts in inventory :/ lack of suport damage and mobility
we like it or not, for now GS is our holy weapon
Let me state before I continue that the following is not optimal.
I sometimes like to use A/A + GS or A/S + S/Sh.
With the latter, I roll Discipline, Defense, Tactics. It has decent mobility since I’m using Blademaster (reduces recharge on sword skills), blocks on both weapon sets, A/S has really solid burst with Impale → Eviscerate → Rip and both sets compliment each other fairly well.
A/A + GS is also fun, albeit not ideal. Whirling Axe can do some very heavy damage if you can manage to land the full channel and with Arcing Slice + Dual Strike + Signet Of Rage you have pretty high Fury uptime.
I’d say you should use what you find most fun unless it’s crucial that your DPS is at it’s peak (raids, speed clear dungeons/Fractals, etc). Otherwise, what’s the point in playing if you don’t enjoy it?
And for the record, I’ve gone as high as 50k with Whirling Axe on NPC mobs before.
Champion: Phantom, Hunter, Legionnaire, Genius
WvW rank: Diamond Colonel | Maguuma
Axe off hand is a newish player choice, or a bad choice.
warrior and we’re the best class” Eugene
Axe off hand is a newish player choice, or a bad choice.
Why?
Double-attack granting fury, a whirling multi-hit attack, and emkelly’s suggestion of comboing it with torch 5 sounds awesome.
If it’s because it doesn’t do the most damage evar, then that’s a silly reason. Chasing optimal damage is like chasing the jackolope.
So I’m honestly asking, why is it a bad choice?

I am currently trying this. Don´t know yet if its good enough.

Not saying it is ideal, but you can go Axe/- and -/Axe and then use a Sigil with the text “When Swapping to this Weapon: do..”
lets you stay in Axe/Axe but with able to Bleed, Poison, Might, Swiftness, Crit etc…
in open world pve u can wear whatever u want tbh. sometimes i roll with mace /mace just for fun to break out the monotony. but if u are serious about dungeons/fractals/raids you should always go for an optimal setup, otherwise ppl will not take you as a seryous player
imho a/a was so much better when you could dodge roll while channelling it,
the skill its self dealt a little bit less damage, but the overall damage was massive when you threw in reckless dodge, plus you were evading for pretty much the whole channel
