Best weapons?
You can use every weapon, but for ealry leveling I recommend Sword/axe and lateron Greatsword, because these deal the most damage so far.
Update 5.9.2013: getting better ANet, still way to go!

Like ^ said, sword/axe or greatsword. You want the mobs to die fast.
Make sure you have a rifle on switch. That weapon has saved my behind so many times
Just curious, why not Axe/Axe to get the Vulnerable debuff/Eviscerate?
Or am I missing something from sword other than bleeds?

Hm. Sword/Axe is more popular than I thought it’d be. :o
@Exp – Sword/Axe offers more mobility and control than Axe/Axe, so I guess that’s why?

I use Sword/Warhorn on my swap for movement or kiting.
For my actual fight set, MH Axe is very consistent and mobile multitarget sustained DPS with 111111111111111111111111111. Not exciting, but /shrug.
Sword MH seems meh for actual [PvE] fighting [against normal mobs] when you could just kill the mob directly with Axe. Sword OH is nice though for bonus defense with offense.
I always used GreatSwords and it worked brilliantly especially with the Hundred Blades skill which wiped away most of the mobs in approx 2 blows. Plus, I prefer GS because of it’s AOE ability which is extremely useful in PvE

I can tell you that I love Axe/Axe it is very wonderful especially with having never ending adrenaline to spam eviscerate. I also would highly recommend a range to go with it like longbow or rifle (I went rifle).
It gives you great variablity.
Don’t cave into the GS crowd as the only spec you can have.
I love my Hammer and Mace/Axe combo. Alot of control and good damage. I do carry around a Greatsword for farming, and a Bow and Rifle when ranged is needed. But really, all weapons are good if you build for them. Really depends on what you want to do
GS cleaves like a boss. GS also really pulls ahead when you get to 40+ for forceful greatsword and slashing power. The traits available to GS users are just nuts.
MH axe is good too, but I could never get into the feel of it, just felt awkward at times.
Offhand warhorn is also really nice for the swiftness and vigor buffs, both of which are very valuable not even factoring that they buff allies as well.
Carrying a bow/rifle is important too, even if you don’t use it all the time. There are some occassions when you need to be ranged.

I found that building precision + power and using Axe/Axe to be a really good method of fast farming. Though you won’t have much to keep you alive, the fights shouldn’t last long enough for that to matter. I also have a rifle for the boss fights that you just cannot tank.
PvE for open world: Greatsword + Sword/Warhorn and Bulls Charge. You get perma swiftness with the Signet of Rage when you unlock them.
PvE for dungeons or DPS: Greatsword + Axe/Mace
PvP: Axe/Sword + Bow (Axebow), Hammer + Bow (Hambow), or Sword/Warhorn + Bow (Shoutbow)

Voting this as bet answer here, although for leveling, it’s not a bad idea to simply try out every weapon to some extent to get a feeling for them. However, in the end, a GS is all you need to kill stuff. =P

I also nominate this as the best answer, but I’d also like to add in that GS + axe/sword is pretty good for soloing or low manning champions/legendaries in dungeons/fractals and also GS + longbow can be pretty good in PvP if the person playing it is skilled.
