In pve no you dont, you can go full offensive yolo..
Pvp? sure you can walk without it…. if you like to run away all the time.
Without defensive traitline you must build FULL offensive and hope you can nuke your opponent before he does.
It’s no problem running without defense at all… in pvp/wvw. And it’s not “ineffective” you know, not running defense, doesn’t mean you can’t run anything else.

maybe if we get Warrior’s Sprint + Fast hands as beseline we can drop discipline, or the new spec has to be really really good.

If we are talking viability, then Vaanss would probably agree that what he does is not as viable as it could be. It is just a lot of fun and very challenging. By no means ‘effective’ though. Any half decent condi player will rip him a new one.

I wonder what traitline we can drop for the elite spec..
It will depend largely on what we get from our Elite spec.
While Dogged March and Adrenal recovery are both quite nice, the main reason Defense is ‘mandatory’ is Cleansing Ire… We really don’t have access to decent Condi cleanse without it.
However, we can already see that changing with the revised trait lines. Brawler’s recovery is being dropped down a tier in the Discipline tree, and it’s quite possible Mending will become a viable option as a heal skill for some builds. If our elite trait line offers more/other forms of condi cleanse, you may be able to sacrifice Defense for it.
The same goes for almost every tree we have, especially since Trait trees won’t grant stats anymore. Why use strength if you’re running a hammer, and get get the damage you need from Discipline+elite? If you’re going to be using most of the utilities we will gain from the specialization, or primarily use the weapon it provides, then many of our vanillia lines (which will each focus pretty much on one weapon and one set of utilities) become less attractive.
That being said, of course, it is unlikely Discipline will ever not be considered ‘mandatory’ for warriors. Fast hands, more than being powerful, is just a very nice passive to have… and very hard to abandon if you’ve played warrior for a while. Buffing warrior’s sprint won’t help, either. But until we actually see what our specialization offers, and what the traits it’s tree will have, I would argue there’s a strong possibility one of our other ‘mandatory’ trees will end up being replaceable.
Anyone who says you can run without Defense has never actually played warrior at any level beyond hotjoin hero. A warrior without at least 4 in Defense and a Longbow is bad and worthless versus competent players. Sure, Axe + GS with 6 in Strength might be fun to run in WvW and Hotjoin, but you’ll be eating dirt half the time in a team fight, and your burst is unreliable at best compared to a thief, mesmer, guardian or even a freaking longbow ranger.
There’s a reason why thief always replaced or succeeded zerker warriors for roamer back in the day. Thief did everything a warrior could do, and did it better. They had better mobility, better escape, better burst, better survivability.
Warrior survivability has improved since those days with Cleansing Ire, Healing Signet, and Zerker Stance, at the cost of probably half their previous damage, with the trait realignments, and the Frenzy nerf. In the end they’re still a slightly mediocre gimmick.

GS/Hammer isn’t so bad now that Stability is fairly rare, but yeah. Zerker Warrior will never be optimal unless they overbuff the living hell out of it, simply because he lacks instant teleports and gets screwed by long Protection uptime, block and blind spam.
Warrior has the most messed up traits they are scattered everywhere anet needs to do some fixing on the warrior traits before they even move on to the next thing. Only being able to pick 3 traits yea sounds great for other classes but not for the warrior.
Basically, every future warrior (pvp/wvw) build will have Defense and Discipline. The third trait line will be determine by what type of build you run. Not very much different than what we are stuck with now.
