Greatsword's #1 attack... Why so lackluster?

It’s because on paper the damage on Hundred Blades is super high, even though in reality the skill has very few practical applications in PvP (against good players).
Hundred Blades also runs contrary to the rest of the greatsword skillset. A long stationary channel just doesn’t belong with the rest of the mobility stuff.
Skill needs to be changed but now it’s like such a PvE crutch that they’d never have it. Who knows.
Priorities, what to do?

The thing that divides a good GS Warrior than a bad one is knowing HB does not need to be landed fully.
Land 4 hits and you’re doing good.
The 1 chain is sort of weak but it stacks Vuln.
This is a good way to create a “cover condition” in case you’re stacking other conditions that you don’t want to be removed.
When I first started PvPing, my favorite attack was hundred blades… I only use it now if the enemy is in a stun (like earthshaker, since I run a hammer as well). Even then, I interrupt it before it finishes because I’m in love with whirlwind attack. It makes sense that the 1 key has to suffer because of Hundred blades, but I still really love being mobile, and hundred blades doesn’t really seem to fit that whole theme.
I guess I’ll just keep using the greatsword between hammer cooldowns, then. Just use 3, 4, and 5 on the greatsword, because they’re mobile, fun, and I’m traited for 1s of immobilize on cripple, which makes bladetrail very useful. I love the greatsword, and even though everyone suggests I get rid of it for a better support or control weapon, I can’t seem to get away from it. I like the mobility too much, and having rush and whirlwind attack break immobilize is awesome.

Kinda strange, but GS is like the opposite of axe. Axe has the best auto-attack of all the warrior weapons, but the other abilities all do less damage, and are mainly used for their other effects (aoe, might, vulnerability)
