Guardian envy?
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.
I keep logging onto my guardian. I do this, because people just can’t stop talking about how great they are.
I then log into WvW and get stomped.
I don’t get it….
On my warrior, I get Healing Signet, Adrenal Health, Regen Banners, some regen food, and I can charge into battle, and feel like a god among men.
100blades is no joke in zerg pvp, and I can down people three at a time when they try to rez someone. I can’t be kited with my longbow, and the #3 blast is devastation from above.
On my guardian, I’m late to the show most of the time, because they are so godawful slow. If I don’t get ganked by a thief on my way to the battlefront, the first person with burst, that targets me, has about a 70% chance of sending me back to the waypoint.
What good is 30% damage reduced from protection (for only a few seconds) when you have no health to begin with? …and where is their amazing healing?
I honestly don’t get it, and I will continue to happily log onto my banner warrior.
Just gonna bold that bit so the other guardians that read this thread know to skip it.

This must be satire…
Really? ‘cause with 3374 armor I still routinely get backstabbed for 9-11k, after that I may get off a dodge roll or two, but the fight’s basically over as long as he can just cloak ‘n dagger and then backstab me again. Since I’m a guardian, I can’t kite him, I have to land hits to heal, and that’s suicide.
It’s also not uncommon to get a second backstab from a second thief working in tandem from with the first one, and die instantly.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.
Yes, even if the thief gets off the first hit, you should just pop your aegis and protection. If the thief continues to attack you you should be able to mitigate most of the damage between your blind, block and protection. With 3300 armor and protection you should have upwards of 70% damage reduction. Put down your symbols, retaltiation and the thief will basically kill himself trying to do damage to you.
Of course, the recent change to boon stripping hurts you, but then you probably won’t get back stabbed since its a different weapon set combination.
You know how to play your Warrior.
You don’t know how to play your Guardian yet.
Once you get used to the Guardian you’ll better understand its strengths and weaknesses and why some have the opinion that they’re just a better version of the Warrior.
I don’t think they are in WvW, but sPvP, totally.

I just rolled a Warrior after playing my Guardian for a week in WvW (lvl 80, all PvE…….I also have an 80 Thief that I did 70 levels with in WvW, 80 Ranger that I did 40 levels with in WvW, and an 80 Engi, all PvE). The Warrior, even at level 8, is a beast in WvW. In zergwars, with zero toughness (hey, I’ve got the starter armor!), I can roll into the enemy zerg at the front lines, 100 Blades their front/mid lines, roll through to the squishies (mainly to roll clear of their AOE) and start whittling them down before I have to roll back out. Sends them running for the hills. I tag lots of enemies and do surprisingly good damage.
I don’t have that sort of offensive power on my Guardian (mix of Clerics/Soldiers with Zerker weapons and all ruby jewels to get my crit chance to 50% and crit damage over 70% unbuffed). Note my Guardian is AH build, so he’s really made for survival, but with meh damage output, surviving doesn’t mean much when my team is getting roflstomped in the open field. Where my Guardian shines is in the utility that he brings to the fight. I typically run with GS/Staff, and Line of Warding is godly. Being able to stop an entire zerg from getting through a doorway, even for a few seconds, can turn the tide of the battle. Combine it with Wall of Reflection and for 5 seconds the enemy is stymied. There’s nothing like that on the Warrior (other than their bodies being a meat shield and swinging away with Hammer 4).
So…..I hear you about the Guardian getting stomped in WvW. Mine isn’t a front line pusher (he’s not built for it, and it’s not my preferred play style for him), and if I try to be I just get smashed. If you want a front line beast, IMO it’s Warrior FTW. I’m having a total blast on my little Warrior, that’s for sure. I have 20 badges in the first hour of WvW with him (brought him into WvW at lvl 5, he’s lvl 8 now).
Oh….and sumpin is wrong with your Guardian if you’re getting hit with 9k+ backstabs. I’ve never been crit for more than maybe 6k on mine, then I turn on the Thief and WW them into the dirt. When I roll “offensively”, I go GS/Hammer, and Banishing a Thief out of Shadow Refuge followed by Ring of Warding and just pummeling them with my big Hammer is endless fun. I can almost hear them squeak as they try to run, only to find they can’t escape. :-)

Guardians are not about dropping 3 people in 2 seconds (usually), but in a large group where guardians can continually heal and buff eachother they are almost unstoppable. Basicly they are not about individual performance but about team play, and if you have a whole team of players built to help everyone else thats a LOT stronger than a team of players all built to maximise their own power.
Gunnar’s Hold
What kind of build are you using on your Guardian? Sure Guardians have less mobility than warriors but they have decent access to swiftness and I do not usually find myself behind the pack.
Burst is not even a problem for me because I have 3,200 armor on my Guardian and protection and about 18K HP. Thieves are annoying sure but between tanky stats, aegis and heal on dodge, AH, etc.
Warriors yes they have nice HP, but many will argue what the use of it is without good sustain or protection boons.
And I call BS on getting backstabbed for 9K-11K routinely with 3374 armor. It was more likely a combination of skills that added to around that number. My warrior has 3150 armor and I’ve only got hit by a 9K backstab once and that was with 20 stacks of vulnerability. Most backstabs hit me on average for around 6K, and that is without protection. Guardians have protection so I don’t understand at all how you get hit for 9K-11K backstabs constantly. Plus you also have aegis and blocks from your heal. Not sure how you are getting stomped, especially as a Guardian. There is probably something you are not doing right.
favourite weapon on the Guardian is the hammer because it hits like a truck, has good CC and the ring of warding is so beast.

He’s only level 8. I can’t even select traits yet, so he’s a “zero” build, LOL.
Seriously, the “stock” Warrior packs a punch as soon as you unlock all the weapon skills (that’s why I didn’t jump into WvW at level 1….I wanted all the weapon skills unlocked). For a little while I rolled around with 2 lvl 80 Warriors and nothing stopped them. They literally just rolled over groups of 2-5. They both used hammers and simply destroyed stuff in the open field.
Once I get to level 80, based on what I see in the Traits and how I want to play this class, I’ll likely go with something like 20 20 0 20 10, Knights, all Ruby gems, and zerker weapons. Build editors say that should be good for about 3500 attack, 2500 armor, 20k HP, 60% crit chance, and 70% crit damage using non-ascended gear. :-)
For we will crush your bones on the Anvil Rock!
favourite weapon on the Guardian is the hammer because it hits like a truck, has good CC and the ring of warding is so beast.
I have an 80 guard with a hammer build and AH. Auto attack is so slow and doesnt seem to do much damage. My MightB crits only seem to do 3-4k damage. Short of going into a zerker build it doesnt hit like a truck for me. What kind of damage are you dealing with the hammer?
I feel like GS or Rifle warriors dwarf the amount of damage I can put out with a hammer guard
EDIT* also did they ever fix the ability to jump over the ring of warding? for the longest time it was useless b/c everyone just jumped over it.
If you’re not building for damage I’m not sure why you’re expecting it, that said the Hammer skills for Guard and Warrior are functionally identical in damage except for Mighty Blow, a blast finisher that hits harder than anything in the Warrior’s repertoire. This isn’t to mention that the last auto on the Guard’s Hammer chain is a cleansing combo field that grants AoE protection and can be traited to AoE heal as well (lol).
Valor (the Guard Hammer line) naturally grants 20 – 30% crit damage so you can swap out some Berzerker gear for Knight’s/Valk’s at no appreciable loss.
I believe I said short of going full zerker. I never said I didnt build for damage. I use a mix of zerker/ valk and knights gear have nearly 50% crit and empowering might. I do not remember what my crit damage is (havent played the toon since dec).
As you stated you can easily swap out zerker for valk/ knights and that is exactly what I did.
I also use staff for my other weapon so I can build up a ton of might really rapidly. My complaint was that the auto attack is so slow and if you are waiting until the 3rd in the chain to throw down your mighty blow for the AH proc and the prot from the blast finisher its extremely slow and compared to a GS warrior with a single button press even when not spec’d zerker can out damage it yes I would argue that it does in fact not hit like a truck.
1-2k crits on auto attack x 3 plus 4500 for MB vs a non zerker warrior in greens dealing 13-17k with 100B the guy sitting behind me at work states he routinely sees these numbers in green travelers gear.
I’m sure someone will say I am doing it wrong and for that I say you are missing the point.
I imagine if I spec full zerker with all ruby orbs that my 2 skill presses and nearly 8 seconds of time spent waiting on the chain before popping MB results in close to 100B damage. That is why my Gaurdian sits on the shelf collecting dust and I play my other toons a lot more.
I’m going to assume you’re posting from a PvE perspective, in which case sure you’re not going to be competing with a Warrior for damage any time soon. However outside of PvE, 100B is a virtual non-entity while Guard Hammer is very strong (you do not need to self-combo the field for it to be valuable).
Correct ^^
