Having trouble with Axe Warriors...
Axe warriors are easy. You already know their main goal will be to land eviscerate. That makes it incredibly easy to stop them. Always save 1 extra dodge or block, because it will come. Its just a matter of when. If youre watching for the eviscerate (you should be) axe warriors fall apart
i see, you think to counter them should be ezly with hammer?
Hammer is a control weapon. If the axe user has stability, then the control brought by the hammer becomes useless against him (unless he’s debuffed, either by a friendly class such as a mesmer or a necro, or maybe by the sigil of nullification).
Now, to answer your question, get used to the evisceration tell, then:
- Inflict as much cripple and chill as you can, as an axe user should never eviscerate while under the influence of one of these two,
- Consider kiting as a useful technique, because (1) staying melee against an axe user is dangerous (the AA hits hard) and (2) the axe per se has no mobility. If the opponent complements his axe with a GS, then know he has exchanged mobility for control and defense, and respond accordingly,
- Anticipate the evisceration by checking out the might stacks. An axe user will rarely eviscerate if he has no might, because that’d be a waste of adrenaline,
- And of course, once he has used the skill, then count about 10 seconds before he uses it again.
Eventually, apply the usual damage mitigation techniques:
- Dodge, and make sure your build contains a source of improvement for your endurance regeneration. Dodge wisely though, i.e. make sure you have another defensive skill ready when you dodge, because skilled users will provoke your dodge before doing their bursts,
- Block, and if your weapons set has no block, ask yourself whether you’re not too damage-oriented. Note that a determined axe user could go for the Sigil of Might, possibly making his evisceration unblockable, at the price of a used skill slot,
- Control, but never forget that a warrior has easy access to stability and breakstuns,
- Use the Berserker’s Stance to avoid soft control, and use Endure Pain to take on bursts. Use them a their fullest though, don’t be controlled (possibly use stability), and inflict damage during their duration.
Regards.
Great hints Elegie, very helpful, tyvm sir!
It made me wondering what build you are running with Pupi, could you post it down?

Hammer still > axe if played right. Sure axe users can bring stab, but it is so incredibly easy to land Fierce Blow on them. Weakness is so strong, and they can’t cleanse that unless they land the eviscerate or swap to lb and waste their adrenaline on fire field instead. Not to mention when fighting a axe war, once they run out of stability (which most axe wars only run 1 util for because they want endure pain or sig of stamina) , the fight shifts drastically in the hammer war’s favor. Even with endure pain, they will still be stun-locked and at the mercy of Fierce Blow and weakness.

The hammer is definitely a strong weapon, and its damage potential could be superior to the one of the axe alone, for all the good reasons that you have pointed out.
But… it’s not fair to compare a two-handed weapon with a single-handed one – you need to at least throw another weapon to complement the axe. And when you do so with a shield, for instance, aside from stability and Endure Pain, you gain a stun (interrupt) and a block, which not only improve the resilience of the player, but also increase its damage potential (stunning before an evisceration, gaining might with Mighty Defenses).
In group fights, I believe in the superiority of the hammer; in 1v1, I tend to prefer the balance offered by the Axe/Shield (damage and high burst, vulnerability, cripple, stun and block).
dodge that F1? it’s not that hard, get sigil of energy, and use your block.

Of course Magnito, here it is:

oh wow. now that build is… unusual.

Shield bash – Evis..Have fun trying to dodge it.You will either dodge Shield bash, and if its your last dodge available, you will not dodge Evis. And if shield bash lands, evis will also land.

^ This. Shield Bash serves as a great setup in any XX/S build. Down side is that SB is very telegraphed (like anything warrior). If someone is mobile (aka kiting), then SB doesn’t give much unless you have some mad skill.

It sounds cliche but it’s true: the best counter is to kite. The warrior has no interrupts while using an axe, so you should bank on that fact and use your skills freely without fear of interruption. The autoattack of the axe is strongest only on the final hit of the attack chain, so naturally kiting is the best way to avoid the chain from occurring. Chill reduces the leap range of eviscerate, so generously apply chill if possible. Axe offers no mobility, so kiting is very effective.
Watch the videos in my signature and you’ll see that I struggle most when opponents know how to kite me while using axe.
You are not maximizing the fact you are all power with those weapons. S/S + LB is best used in a hybrid or pure condition build. You only have 250 Condition damage. You should use a GS and forceful GS trait especially since you’re using Strength runes. You should probably be using axe in your build ironically.
I’m an axe warrior and only reason I use eviscerate is because its a 3-condition removal every 8 seconds since I’m quite tanky, the 2-3k dmg I do with it is just a bonus

a near fail safe eviscerate where:
u can immobilize Ur foe with throw axe> eviscerate
or
your can shield bash > eviscerate
or
u can first immobilize > shield bash(by this time enemy would have ran out of dodge) >eviscerate
have fun and enjoy
If Rocket Charge is only 2 leaps then it should look like 2 leaps
True Shot should be cast on the move

Wondering what build you run then…
Even with a soldiers amulet and 0-0-6-2-6 trait set up (which is quite tanky in my opinion) you’re able to blow of a crit up to 6-7k using the sigil of intelligence..
My only main issue with axe warriors is the sheer damage pressure they put on you. I main thief and dodging the evis is just part of the struggle. Personally, I play it safe with axe warriors because I know they have the potential to do more damage tha myself, but I am more mobile and I have stealth. I’ll just stay away and wait for them to make the moves, CnD em, BS, and rinse and repeat. For me at least, these battles are quite drawn out but winnable. As far as countering one as a warrior, I can only recommend dodging, blocking, and anticipating their moves.

hmm power dual swords vs axe could be tough, as power weapons go i think axe trumps sword, i play ALOT of axezerker in pvp and i find the biggest weakness is kiting, but that won’t really work for a sword warrior :P
shield bash being easy to dodge isnt the point, sometimes (well most of the time) theyre using shield bash in hope you’ll dodge it to burn a dodge. its a win win really.. you either need 2 dodges to succesfully dodge the 2nd part which is an evi following the shield bash. if you dont dodge shield bash you’re eating an evi. you need to endure or get a longbow blind off following the dodged shield bash or you can proc a stability off as he’s shield bashing (balanced stance etc). another idea is u can do is run with gs then dodge shield bash and whirlwind backwards through him as he’s performing evi, does decent amount of dmg, gap creates and avoids it all together then follow up with a gs 4 bladetrail to keep his distance.

or, you can use your stun break and one dodge. instead of 2 dodges,
and even if you do use 2 dodges, then you just got the most out of your dodges.
because you won’t be dodge his auto attack, you won’t be dodging his 2 3 5.
Counter with your own axe, but instead use adrenaline health instead of healing sig and hit.him with 2 eviscerate
Eviscerate is… ridiculous overpowered, i know the dmg should be strong as an axe should be, but a dmg pike like that in a 8sec cd is very, very hard to dodge everytime.
I being a power dual sword warrior (sometimes gs), what tips you guys would tell me to deal with axe warriors?? is there a chance against skilled ones being dual sword?
I would suggest playing several axe builds to learn the different ways of setting up Evic. Then when fighting against an Axe warrior save your sword 5 and LB 4 and 5 for when you expect an incoming Evic.
