Usually when I play I am playing by myself. In previous MMOs I’ve been capable of building Paladin-like Warrior Builds. I am still trying to figure out Guild Wars 2 and its traits and skills though.

I am playing Norn-Warrior – Weapon Choices GS and Hammer
I am not looking to play the support warrior, I have seen some builds focused on providing shout support, but I am leaning more toward the signet in my build.

Goal: A high Vitality/ High Toughness – Medium to High Damager – Capable of surviving and killing almost anything and supporting self.

I am making my own weapons and armors.

Any help would be great!
At current I am Level 40. 10 in stength/10 in defense/10 in discipline.

Is the crit raises in discipline worth it. I find myself able to tank most things in open world, but I am getting leveled in Dungeons by enemies.

Here is what I am currently aiming for?

Now when you mean paladin like warriors, what exactly are you referring to?

back in WoW people used to call me the best pallie tank the warrior class had to offer (used to love aoe tanking). So, thats my real exposure to that comment..lol

When I say Paladin, I mean High Health with tanking ability, and Ability to heal oneself and perhaps those around. I know I should probably play a Guardian to get closer to this, but I really dig the warrior in this game.

Play a guardian.

What you’re asking for on the warrior is impossible.

You can either be high dps poor defence.

Mediocre defence, high hps (27k) with some shout heals and low dps.

Warriors can’t tank. You’ve noticed in dungeons you get destroyed by mobs. That’s how it is. Why do you think warriors go rifle/longbow for dungeons. It’s so they won’t get hit.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but warriors are more stand at the back and shout stuff at things, but don’t go too near anything or you’ll get hurt sort of class. Guardian on the other hand seems insanely durable, yet can output dps similar to a warrior.

Strategic approach:

- Toughness
- Regen/heal
- DPS
- CC

Gear-wise, PvE Knight’s looks like a good match with Tough, Prec, Power.

I would use Hammer with the Toughness tree, picking up the regen per Adrenaline and the Hammer trait. From here I think I would get 30 tactics for lower cooldown bursts, then take Berserker Stance, Endure Pain, Stance duration +25%.

Basically Hammer spam, high toughness, Burst spam with Hammer as CC spam and damage.

Sounds tight, I think I might do this on my Warr for PvE pew pew after I outgrow Signets.

Weapon swap would probably be … Axe + Warhorn if I don’t need Adrenaline, or Axe + Axe if I do.

I have noticed this about the Guardian Class, but wanted to play in the role of Warrior. I am 40 levels into the warrior, but I know will be creating a Guardian Class character so I will take that into consideration.

I have seen some Axe/Axe builds that go that route. I am attempting the Vit/Tough/Precision/Power building now. I think this is probably going to be my best bet. I do find it weird that the warrior cant take a hit and is subject to back of the group status in dungeons.

People say that warriors can’t take hits because they like to stand there on the mob, without worrying about anything but weapon abilities, which is what the guardian does.

The warrior’s defenses lay in CC’s, invulnerability stances, like shield stance and Endure Pain, dodges to avoid predictable hits (lots of options to get vigor), and kiting with cripple and immob to fill in the gaps.

Guardians are lazy and just hit the mob with blinds and blocks, over and over.

I would drop the greatsword, and pick up a mace and shield to go with your hammer to maximize face time with a mob

Hey,

First of all, vitality is kinda useless in this game, so avoid going +vitality sets.

My set (+power, +toughness, +healing power):

Cleric’s Draconic set (Monk Runes, +15 boon duration, Aegis on Elite and + healing power)
Cleric’s Pearl Mace + Shield
Sapphire Cleric’s Orichalcum jewelry set

Traits 0/0/30/30/10 (COPY/PASTE the link or it gets broken for some reason):
http://gw2.luna-atra.fr/skills_tool/?lang=en&code=34c6g03n3u42lv458000uuae4fj282g2i2s2v

You should have around 1400 healing power, which mean you’ll get healed for about 300hp/s from your signet, 300hp/s from the banner and another 120hp from you passive, 720hp/s total.

You can also have 100% uptime on fury (20%crit9% from passive) and 6x Might together with a 75% up time 33% speed boost.

I’m running this build and it’s tanky as hell, also your elite is on a 48sec cd, which means a free Aegis from your runes ever 48 sec.

Thanks for that info Khalous! I really do enjoy the look of two handed weapons is the reason for that choice. I have never ever used a shield in any game other than Dark Souls and I limited that. I was told to perhaps go with dual axes which seemed like a fun choice.

I have come up with a really nice build both Gearwise and Traitwise.

I solo most champions in the game that are not bosses , I have no problem taking on 10+ 80 mobs. And I am running mostly solo in WvWvW and have on several occasions beaten 3 or 4 players solo, only having problem finishing them there because of the downed state though.

Weapon of Choice , Dual Axes main set , Hammer , GreatSword or Sword Warhorn as offhand weapons.

Traits ,
10 in Strenght for Berserkers Power , 12% extra damage on full adrenaline
30 in Defense with Stance Duration 25% , Turtles Defense(200+ Toughness on slow, stun and immo) and Defy Pain.
30 in Tactics with 9% crit on adrenaline , Signets recharge faster and the 10% movment speed buff in combat.

Utility Skills , Healing Signet , Balanced Stance(for pvp) or (Signet of Might for Pve) , Charge , Frenzy , Signet of Rage.

Gearing , I have went for Power , Precision , Thougness. With 10 Allstat Runes for PVE , And Rune of Lyssa for PVP.

In my Accesoires I have swapped out the gems for Power Crit Precison gems, as This slot is the best to go for CritDamage in , you trade 5 Stats for 1 CritDamage here , instead of the weapons where you trade 13 or 14 stat point for 1 critdamage.

Sigils I use Superior Sigil of Blood(33% chance on crit for 450 HP, 2 sec cooldown) , and Accurary(5% critchance).

Offset Sigils are Sigil of perception( Gives 250 Precision fully stacked) and Hydromance Sigil (Aoe Chill on Weaponswap)

Consumable Omnoberry Pie (66% on crit to heal for 350 and 70 precision)

What this Build gives me is on full adrenaline 350 something HP a sec on AVG. I have around 2300 Toughness ,2000 power , 20k HP and Almost 100% crit chance and 48%(98) CritDamage in PVP and 60%(110) in Pve.

The healing on attack is really good with axes, when you pop your Spin you wil attack 15 times in a shorttime, against 2 targets that is 30 hits.. on avg 7k HP back from Food consumable and maybe 1500 from weapon sigil.

Also Axes Main attack is really strong in PVP , it does around 85% of Hundredsblades damage in the same time , but you can move while using it. I typicall fight in WvWvW would look something like Charge in to Group of enemies , POP Frenzy and Signet of Rage at the Same time , Now you Have ALL boons in game from Lyssa Runes plus Frenzy , Whack Away with Axes

After Boons run out , Pop Stability keep pounding on them , if you get low on HP time to pop Axe Spin , if not all are dead now and you get down to 25% hp to proc Defy Pain , Swap for Warhorn Sword , Use Swiftness slow removal and Leap out of combat , then Charge away from opponents to wait for Signet of Rage cooldown and Frenzy

sadly for me the Downed state exist otherwise I would be an unstoppable killing machine in WvWvW

It’s not, just not as useful for warriors due to naturally high HP. Lower HP classes like ele, thief, and guardian it is much better for them.

Play a Guardian. You can make a “tank” Warrior but it’s less effective than both the Guardian and some other classes. Warriors are just the generic median class of the game. They don’t do anything well but they’re not terrible at too much either.

The best you can do is run X/Shield with Endure Pain, 30/30 defense and vitality, traited for healing shouts. You can also try to switch out to warhorn for AoE weakness to minimize incoming damage as a quick swap.

Of course you can always just abuse consumable items, but any class can do that.

My build is my build.
It’s not min/maxed, I’ve just arrived at it naturally through playing.
It keeps me alive and is great fun to play.
It isn’t insanely damaging, but has a LOT of CC.
It also has pretty incredible regen.

Build:
20/0/20/30/0
Traits:
Strength:
Berserker’s Power
Distracting Strikes

Defence:
Cull The Weak
Merciless Hammer

Tactics:
Inspiring Banners
Lung Capacity
Inspiring Battle Standard

Utility Skills:
Healing Signet
Bull’s Charge
Shake It Off!
Banner of Defence
Battle Standard

My armour is a full set of Knight’s (P/Pr/T), with 6 Superior Runes of the Dolyak.

Needless to say, I use Hammer. A lot.
When I take a lot of damage, I retreat to range to let my regen work and plug away with a rifle. And I get regen from my runes, Healing Signet and Adrenal Health, as well as any banners I have up at the time.

I rely on interrupts to spread confusion thanks to Distracting Strikes, and I rarely use my burst skill, keeping damage and regen buffs up as often as possible.
I could replace Bull’s Charge with another signet (Signet of Fury has nice synergy with my build, allowing me to use my Burst skill then immediately bring adrenaline back up to full), but I like the interrupt from Bull’s Charge.

I always try to initiate combat with Backbreaker followed by Fierce Blow. Fierce blow proceeds to activate Cull the Weak, and the Weakness debuff from it can be kept up on a target indefinitely. Let alone which, it’s a cone AoE attack, spreading the love.

I have a Sigil of Superior Rage on my hammer too, which kicks in pretty frequently; at least once a fight. Unpredictable, sure, but probably pops as much as Frenzy but without the added risk.

It’s simple enough to switch to a shouty build too, but I like how it is as it stands

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

I started a Guardian character late last night and I think I am going to skill build toward my Hammer version there as many of the weapon skills on the hammer for the Guardian Versus the Warrior seem in my opinion better. I really wanted to build a Thor-Like Character. I decided to go Human since I will still tweak my warrior to get him to a tank-y spec. I appreciate the help.

I LOVE when people think they are tanky, and use banners.

You do realize the other team can just pick them up and run off, right?

The problem is that a warrior can take damage in these builds, but cannot recover HP well or do damage well in higher toughness builds. It means you can stand there and hope your team comes before you die, and most classes will kill you 1v1 because of your lack of damage.

I think Yojacks build, in this thread, offers a viable build that focuses on mobility via warhorn — but every build that has respectable damage has to trade the ability to take a hit (and recover from it) for it.

Sadly in the current game, a guardian does what the OP wants far better… especially since they can do it with higher damage, which is certainly a plus in pvp.

Edit: Also I see no feasible way to hit “100 % crit” with your stat allocation. Can you elaborate?

There are two variants to this: Yojacks 1h sword build can get pretty close to 100% crit (amulet, 25 in the crit stat, +10% chance to crit with sword talent), but the damage is low and the crit is used to proc heals from the sigil of greater blood. Then eviserate builds can have 100% crit on eviserate and hit some wild damage, but these are done via a sigil (sigil of intelligence) that gives crit on next hit when swapped, rather than an overall 100% crit chance across the board.

1833 Precision with food buff(70 prec) , between 48-49% crit chance. 5% crit from Accuracy on weapon. 12% Crit from Perception on Offhand weapon. 20% critchance from Fury(100% uptime). 9% crit chance from Traits, (100% Adrenaline).

Total around 95% Crit chance, usally we have an ORB in WvWvW so its usally over 100% there

going for the vitality line to 30 and getting banner regeneration and larger banner buff radius, equipping signet of healing and knights or clerics armour set will give you the survivability you want, the rest of your traits would be built around your weapon of choice however i go with axe which gives the option to equip various off hand items (another axe in offhand for soloing or warhorn for moving around fast… shield for dungeons perhaps)
I also take the toughness line upto +90 toughness when shield is equipped for when i am doing dungeons

I was going along the lines of dual axe, or axe/mace combined with a rifle for PVE. All I’m aiming for is a self reliant highish dps. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I could do to improve the build?

Hey OP,

I have a lvl 80 Guardian and a lvl 80 Warrior.
At the cost of sounding rude I’m going to be honest and say 90% of the above posts are bad advices/misconceptions and some trolling (lol @ the guy "I can tank 10 mobs and 847 champions while afk).

Guardian has largely better survivability than Warrior and this is out of question, unless you are a complete disaster, woefully bad at playing the Guardian.
Guardian gets protection, aegis, blinds.
It’s cycling those damage negation skills that keep you alive for extended periods, along with the massive healing.

On a Warrior you can delay death a bit on a shout build with blood sigils, adren health, full adren surge and defy pain, but you’re just struggling in between surge cooldowns.
As a Warrior you’re MUCH better off being very mobile, cycle DPS while dodging damage and timing your shield block well.
Kill things before the damage taken outplays your defenses.

Things hit you for 1k+ in endgame, Guardian can prevent that damage and slowly kill everyone, Warrior can kill them before the damage depletes his health completely but it’s not a guaranteed.
