How Da Heck Do You Play Rifle?
I still don’t like rifle. It seems confused as to what role it wants to fill. It appears to be the opposite to the longbow, direct damage as opposed to AoE. However Bleeding shot runs directly opposite to that. If it applied Vulnerability I could understand but there’s no reason for it to apply bleed. I have yet to see a build that isn’t just set around landing Volley and Killshot. All those videos you see don’t show all the times it misses or doesn’t crit and deals terrible damage.
Old Man Burr (War), Bad Hat Ben (Engi), Manly Manny Manson (Guard)
So why use it or how to use it? A way to kite?
I honestly don’t see it as being viable currently, Longbow actually has better direct damage especially with Arcing Shot.

Depends on the scenario, primarily you’d go GS/axe+mace (have to look into sword) but if you deem 100% melee time problematic in a situation then I swap in one ranged, rifle primarily for single target scenarios (#3 is really good) and I do long bow if its more of an aoe situation.
With a weapon swap cd reduction this works out quite nice, however if you are stuck at a 10s cd then I suggest not swapping.
It’s very hard to use effectively soloing which is why the montages show a guy in the middle of a zerg landing these shots. I personally don’t ever care to use it when roaming in WvW. In sPvP it can work better because of small warfare and generally speaking if you stick with someone or enter a fight a bit later it can devastate; however, once the opposing team catches on it’s game over.
I’d much rather use the longbow in 1v1 fights with a greatsword or sword / shield because it just produces the same damage (not single burst with kill shot if you happen to land it) but also because you have more control on when you want to land the f1 since it’s an aoe field shot.
Rifle is single target burst (line AoE w/ Crack Shot).
If I’m with a Zerg, I auto-attack someone close and mouse over their players til I find someone hurting. Next, Volley or Kill Shot depending on the situation.
However, I’m typically roaming. I’ll usually go SoF -> Volley while closing. How they respond is what dictates my next decisions. If they try to run, I switch back to rife, Volley to bait dodges -> Cripple and pursue.
My rifle build went down the drain after June 25th build, that hurt.

Mine too. I have been trying to come up with a decent one since then and haven’t had much luck.
Yeah, pre-patch I had a rifle build that was successful, but haven’t had the heart to touch that character since the patch. In general PvE I’ve used rifle or LB primarily for kiting mobs at range. Melee is not always an option. If you are at the top of the aggro table and the mob (vet/champ) is spamming hard-hiting abilities, dodge provides limited utility. You die or drop back to range.
It’s a single target burst weapon. That said, since the longbow buffs and, more importantly, cleansing ire (and the fact that Longbow is the only weapon that can proc CI without hitting, and that brutal shot takes forever and 2 days of being immobilized to trigger CI, even if it hits) Longbow has simply become the better option, with rifle needing some love.
However Bleeding shot runs directly opposite to that.
Or you could ignore the bleed and account for everything else you’re getting. It’s…disconcerting how many people get caught up in the fact that there IS a bleed there instead of everything else about the kittening weapon.
This is a build I experimented with before and it’s pretty interesting. You use GS / Rifle with Bull’s Rush, Bolas and Ignore Pain. I don’t recall the exact traits but it had Leg Specialist in it and then just Rifle/GS damage/CD traits. You also want 20 points in Discipline for Mobile Strikes.
The idea behind the build and why I liked it was that you tried to play the role that put your opponent in a tough spot. So lets say you were facing a melee thief or a D/D Ele or a Guardian, you would try and use your build to play from range as much as you can and do damage with your rifle. When they got close to you, you can Bull’s Charge into 100B and then WW through them, rush away and get back to your rifle.
At the same time, if you meet a profession that wants to play from range, you make up for the damage loss when you’re not in melee by doing damage with your rifle, while trying to catch up to them.
With Leg Specialist you’re able to always land your Bolas and Bull’s Rush. It’s a 1v1 build as I’m sure you’re able to tell, but it’s a pretty fun and creative one.
Hope this helps, good luck!

That sounds solid but can any one else vouch for it?
Is this the build?

Just try it out yourself but just like with any other warrior build, you need to know your opponent’s profession fairly well in order to win. The gear I used was mostly Berserker btw.
