How are Warriors in 1v1?

So, please quit saying warrior is horrible when you are a not good at warrior. It’s not warrior’s problem, it’s your problem.
This goes to you, and to Avliss too, whom I’ve been following (his videos) for a while.
Warriors aren’t “horrible”. That much is true, and clear, warriors CAN deal enough damage to bring any class down, no matter the regen, the boons or the dodges.
But that doesn’t mean that warriors are Okay. In spvp you won’t be doing 1v1 duels (with those kittenty rules people use on duels), and any time you are faced from higher ground, or with numbers advantage, you will always have problems. Are warriors good in 1v1? yeah, they kind of are, they can burst around 30k damage in the first 10 seconds of a fight, but if you miss half of it (dodges, blocks, CCed, etc), you won’t win the duel.
Avliss has some nice builds for wvw, and I’ve been following his videos for a while, but after some time, he started making videos of duels only. And that doesn’t serve any purpose in wvw or spvp. People will use terrain, will call friends, will escape, etc.
The warrior class NEED some sort of statying capability. Some regen, some life steal, some sort of long term damage mitigation (like protection), or some escape mechanism. The things every other class have (except necromancer) to play a 1v1 and have an option if things go badly. That much is necessary in wvw, where you don’t simply respawn, you have to both: repair and walk your way to the point you were. And that means time and gold consumption, that you can’t afford.
And, sadly, your videos Anastasis, prove nothing. Any class can beat 2 bad players, and yeah, downed state doesn’t really represent classes, warrior have one of the best downed states, that doesn’t mean you should seek to be downed to be effective.
I love warrior’s downed state.
Chill. Laugh.

I’m going to be kicking my streams into high gear soon. Focusing 75% of it on tournament builds, tournament play, the Warriors place in a tournament as well as fielding questions from the chat regarding Warriors.
I don’t think a class is solely good based on how many foes they can down in an allotted time, but rather what they bring to the team overall.

What we bring to the table is kind of our problem though isn’t it? Many of the roles in TPvP can often be better filled by another class. You could have your team build around having you but I’m not sure that’s the best option. Even when I do well in PvP I feel like I had the skill advantage, not that I was on equal ground.

though great sword warriors will deal incredible damage if a team mate manages to trip the victim of all stun breakers and lock them down in place.

Yeah, I think that’s an important point that’s often ignored. The Warrior class requires a very high level of individual skill to play well and to be effective, and if you’re a average or lower-skilled player you’ll struggle quite badly. The Warrior is unforgiving in this respect.
In contrast, other classes are far more forgiving, where even relatively poor players can achieve a good degree of success by virtue of their class being better designed. It comes down to the strength of options available to each class – when you have a class with multiple, strong options, then player skill is less important.

Are you still playing 20/0/20/0/30? I gave a lbow/gs build a try myself when dogged march came out and as you said it was suprisingly effective against squishy HGH engys for example and it totally shut down terrormancers, but against decent BM rangers it was still hopeless if they were on the same level as me. And getting trained in midfights was very painful with almost no way to escape against coordinated burst. Definitely needs another burster in midfights though to bring down bunkerguards/eles.

Horrible if you are average, good if you are really good and skilled. But you be better with any other class.
Thiefs, elementalist and mesmers will kitten you, hands down, possibly necros too if they’re good.
Engeneers and guardians I usually come to a skirmish with.
BM rangers will kitten you if they are good, bow rangers are a joke and if spec correctly you will most likely win.
This set up which is the classic zerker warrior usually get’s kitten d by almost everyone, other builds are way better and turn the warrior from horrible to decent but against most classes there is little you can do. However as team member you can give some utility again still better with any other class.

Funny how everyone on the other class forums are always shouting “Warrior OP,” but everyone that actually played a warrior know that’s not the case.
After playing pretty much every class, I think it’s safe to say warrior takes the most amount of skills to be good. But that’s also what makes them fun imo.

I still have some testing to do, and I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of warrior traits / skills etc. are about to change so I’m not putting a lot of effort into showing people the build just yet.
But when it’s ready I will :P

Defektive you went full Anet.
On a more serious note, next balance patch will hopefully bring some nice trait rework and our warrior community can start theorycrafting hardcore again. When the time comes, let’s all play nicely and share our ideas with the rest of us.
Can’t wait to blow dust off my warrior tPvP wise.

Ahh, even more intriguing! Would be nice to get some buffs but hope they dont overdo it like with other classes so we see a million FOTM identical classes
On a side note (and if you see this), I have been watching your hammer build videos and notice you use your heal quite a few times even though your life is full and your adrenaline bar is almost full. Is this just so you can engage with a 100% adrenaline bar or is there some other reason behind it that I haven’t seen in the traits?
Hope today’s/tonight’s State of the Game chat with the devs show some hope for the warriors and what they plan to do with them, I know planning isn’t the same as implementing but it would still be good to know. Just in case, the details for the State of the Game may 31st can be found here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/State-of-the-Game-May-31-1PM-Pacific

Regarding the healing, out of habit I do it before a fight. I try to do it a good 10 seconds before a fight starts so I’m at 100% offensive state, because by the time I need the heal again it should be ready. Essentially just trying to maximize everything to I’m most optimal in a fight.

I just notice a lot of warriors put out builds that haven’t been thoroughly put through the ringer and end up asking people for their opinions and poking holes in their own build. The end result are people who comment on how the build isn’t good but if you do XYZ it will be.
All I’m trying to do is avoid that.
Warriors aren’t that bad in 1v1. They are awesome against boon-reliant builds.
Still, pit one against ranger, thief, or mesmer, and they are toast.

@Drek Thalon:
There’s some good advice in your post, but having said that, tactics like these always look great on paper. What I mean is, it’s easier said than done and takes little to no consideration of what your opponent is doing (nor their level of skill.)
“The best-laid schemes o’ mice an ’men, Gang aft agley.”
Much of your advice, such as “cleanse conditions”, “avoid AoE” and “keep up the pressure” are generalities and to be honest, quite obvious. The problem being that much of what you say is precisely what Warriors have trouble doing. Read the forums; you seem to be under the impression that everyone else runs a greatsword/Bull’s Charge/Frenzy/glass-cannon build when that’s clearly not the case. Shout builds, hammer builds, longbow builds, etc. have all been played and discussed and lo and behold, they all ultimately suffer from the same (if not similar) problems. Of course player skill is a factor but you cannot seriously insist that the class is not at a disadvantage in many key areas in comparison to other classes? “L2p” is as arrogant as it is unhelpful.
On this note, if you do believe it’s just a learn-to-play issue for most, fine, but learning to play the class means putting in hours and hours of dedicated practice. Most people I’d guess don’t have the luxury of being able to spend 4, 5, 6, 7 hours per day to do so. What we’re left with then is a PvP game which is unfriendly, unwelcoming and frustrating for the more casual players. An important point when you consider that a thriving PvP game needs as many players as it can get.
I’m not saying dumb it right down, but PvP shouldn’t just be for the elite, highly skilled players – it should be something everyone can play and enjoy. For this to happen, first and foremost, the classes must be balanced fairly. What’s the point in having a powerful class that very few can play successfully? Bravo to you if you’ve mastered the Warrior class to the extent that you can win most/all matchups or duels. I wish I was that good, and I mean that with all sincerity. Sadly, myself and (I suspect) the majority of other Warriors are struggling for the most part despite our best efforts.
Responding to other players who would like to play and enjoy this class more by simply saying “l2p” is, quite frankly, a churlish attitude to have. Very few are calling for Warriors to be made into and over-powered, easy win class. Most of the “biitching” (as you call it) is actually just Warriors who would like to see some parity. If you think the class is fine and we all just need to “l2p” so be it, but understand you are firmly in the minority.
tl:dr We’re not all as good as you. Like I said, bravo.
Very well said. I started out with a Warrior, leveled him to 80 using GS/R and have 3k+ power, 3k+toughness and 21k+ health with good crit stats using all Knights gear. I’ve also logged over 100 hours of WvW with my Warrior and I’m very competitive.
That being said, I’ve come to a conclusion about my beloved Warrior; our window of opportunity/success vs. most other classes is dramatically smaller in comparison. The room for error is minute and to consistently beat great thieves, mes’, ele’s takes almost machine-like precision and execution along with using all the right equipment and shouts/signets etc and having them ready at all the right times for each unique situation which is not going to always be the case as we know we never know what class is coming around the bend in WvW.
I excel in PvE (who couldn’t) and WvW in larger groups but in 1v1’s or 1v2’s with my Warrior my win/loss ratio vs. great players is not good and while I do not consider myself to be great I feel I can hold my own pretty well and should do a lot better but as I said I feel Warriors aren’t given the same concessions as thieves per say.
I have a level 80 thief using a DD-short bow stealth build and have only logged roughly about 8 hours with him and my kill/death ratio in WvW 1v1’s and 1v2’s is tremendously better vs. all classes even tanked up Guardians and especially vs. my beloved Warriors. I feel as a thief, the outcome comes down to how well I play as opposed to what class I am. Plus if I’m in trouble I can stealth+regen or stealth /teleport out and come back to terrorize again. Warriors have no such security blanket. Not even close.
IDK, if all the stars align and you do everything right all the time a Warrior can win the day everyday but that’s a fantasy IMHO. I’m sure I’ll take kitten for this and as I said, I feel I’m not an uber great player and this is just my own personal experience having played hundreds of hours with my Warrior and I’m not trying to whine. I just think it is what it is…
Warriors are an absolute joke in PvP. Anyone who says otherwise really needs to pull there head from there rears. Unfortunately many people have over-inflated egos and think that smashing Zergs with a hammer and doing a Zerker CoF run is skill.
I just don’t get why some fellow Warriors wouldn’t want to see the class strengthened?
In my opinion it’s either stupidity or narcissism.

Warriors are a far more powerful class than is being given credit here and VERY flexible and rewarding to skilled players.
Absolute trash in the hands of the un-imaginative… But still a great and powerful class.
I think the biggest issues overall would be people REFUSING to play skilled play because it isn’t warrior enough.
Sure bunker guardians will beat you if you don’t play the kiting game, but at the same time.. A bunker guardian is ONLY useful for holding a position and not exploiting it’s weakness because “it doesn’t feel right” is stupid.

lol, wut?
What are you talking about? Warriors are only garbage because players refuse to play the class well? Is that what you’re saying? Jeez-oh. Yeah, often in fights I find myself thinking, “I could kill this Guardian/Thief/Mesmer/BM Ranger if I wanted to but I won’t… because it doesn’t feel right”, “it isn’t warrior enough.” (Whatever that means…?)
Do you not see how utterly stupid that sounds?
In case you’ve not noticed, these “un-imaginative” players you speak of make up the overwhelming majority of people who play Warrior. So no, it’s not a “great and powerful class” if only the minority of highly-skilled players can be successful with it.
Here’s something – seeing as you think imagination is the key – imagine a class that wasn’t just reserved for the elite to play, where even casual players (you know, the bulk of the people playing this game) could pick it up and play it quite successfully… like you can with practically every other class in the game. Crazy idea, eh?
Necro is bugged and broken and weak.
Now after you’ve tried necro, go try warrior. Warrior is so bad that even upscaled newbie necro can beat up experienced warrior with a solid build.
Warrior is horrible for solo and not so good for small groups either. In zerg they’re ok just because of endure pain and lots of hp/armor, even then I’d say guardians rock warriors any day. Not because guardians are so awesome, it’s because warriors are so bad.
Lol. I didn’t know this place existed. Oh well, here you go, my solo roam build is in one of these and it wrecks 90% of the people I face. https://www.youtube.com/user/alphabetEF

I ran Taugrim’s Run n Gun WvW spec for the longest time. And really enjoyed it as a solo’er. He didnt outshine anyone, but I did pretty good with it. I just felt outta the loop when running with zergs tho. Since it was set more as a single target set up.
Every now and then, I feel that I gotta dust off the ol’ rifle, re-trait… and head out hunting. But its rare that I do that anymore.

give us the damage enough to burst down a full bunker as a full zerker and we have a deal! anet! more staying capability would be just another guardian anyway

I love playing as a warrior, period. The spirit of the class is my calling. :-9
I get a decent amount of kills on every class in spvp imo, decent enough staying power in 1v1 spots—dps and down some fools bad enough so as not to find it horribly unfair when their necro/ranger buddies rush in and demolish me with conditions. Circle of life. It’s my preferred class vs others i’ve played extensively, but hey, I’ll fully admit to being a semi-casual player. It’s actually kinda funny to watch players on their immobilize/CD/stealth powertrips get excited about another pooooor duuummbb noob GS 100b spammin’ warr!1 to take advantage of—at the end of the day, it puts the R in the RPG for me That’s a warrior; staunch and forceful, capable but not indomitable, preyed upon for the role they choose to play in battle and accepting all manner of poisonous, bleedy death into their sturdy bodies ’til the glorious end.
In all seriousness though, I’m obviously not saying more tightly invested players have nothing to complain about as far as the class limitations go. :p I really wouldn’t know; I’m not trying to be the best or anywhere near it. To have a memorable experience and die a lot (maybe too much) alongside guildies and friends is fine with me. I’m having plenty of fun with warrior and I’m sticking to it.
(Seriously though, I wouldn’t mind some better condition removal. I do somewhat suspect though, the warr would be a bit OP with just that one thing, ahahaa)
Just my 2cents.
warriors are fairly competitive 1v1 if you know what you are facing.. fighting a thief? well u can be bunker hammer, shield/axe with retaliation, or you can be glass rifle, shield/axe.. you can choose control, or you can choose glass with immunes and burst, facing a d/d ele, well u need sword/warhorn and greatsword and condition removals, to keep up with his mobility and remove his annoying conditions, fighting a mesmer? now conditions are king, you can spec and gear for higher cond damage/duration and use longbow and sword/X to wear him down slowly dispite his constant blinking and invis, this goes on and on for every other class, a warrior CAN spec to be effective against all of them.
the issue here is that while yes warriors can be effective 1v1, they cant be multiple specs simultaniously and they need to be in order to compete. compare that to a thief. a vast majority of thieves are either d/d or d/p main hand and shortbow offhand.. very little flexibility in their weapon sets, and very little true variance in their playstyles, (get stealthed-backstab, repeat) same goes for elementalist. a d/d has all the tools they need to compete just with those two weapons.. dps/mobility in fire and air,, heals/support in water. control in earth. A warrior meanwhile has control weapons, (mace/shield/hammer,) mobility weapons, (GS/sword/warhorn,) range weapons, (Rifle, longbow) and condition weapons, sword/longbow. and the warrior NEEDs varying combinations of those weapon sets in order to be effective against other classes who simply put, dont have or need all that bloat.
I think it’s sad that a thief can kite my warrior better then a ranger can lol the shortbow OP evade teleport past evade stealth evade teleport past .. Makes GS axe shield so annoying when vsing this kitten

I completely agree with this post and this is why I think warriors f2-4 should be 3 different weapon sets basically like an ele
I play a war tank. I know… “roll a guardian, war tanks suck, boo, blah blah blah”. But in PvP it’s been working for me. The only class that I consistently have trouble with are Mesmers. Other classes haven’t been all that tough. Occasionally there is a godly player, regardless of class, that still rips through me.
I can usually jump into a group of four and hold them off for a good 30 seconds when my Rampage is up. I don’t win when going against that many, but if my team is on the ball they can take over some flags unchallenged.

Sounds interesting, mind sharing your build?
Beast mode
Horrible if you are average, good if you are really good and skilled. But you be better with any other class.
This is exactly the problem. People like Anastasis will come in and make arrogant “L2P” comments but fail to understand that the point you made is the angle a lot of people are really wanting to come from. Any decent player can stomp a couple of bads, but when you can do the same thing, better, simply by playing another class, that should be addressed.
You want to go 1vs15 and win.
Not gonna happen.
Wrong. This is not my position at all. I want warriors to have their own role, like other classes, that another class cannot simply fill better. I want warriors to be balanced against other classes fairly, rather than the lackluster position they are in, comparatively. I in no way said that I want the class to be overpowered and you are blatantly misrepresenting my position if this is how you seek to view it. Good day.

This is roughly my war tank build for pvp. I’m still experimenting with weapons.
