It’s quite a general question! The build you run and the build they run often determine the fighting techniques to be used

The targeting problem is indeed annoying. When fighting against thieves, I’m always ready to press either a defense skill (block, dodge, Endure Pain) or the tab key to find the target as fast as possible. Against mesmer, I simply tab over the clones until I find the real one, then press CTRL+T to keep the target up (a mesmer cannot stealth as often as it appears).

The burst thing is much more manageable, it’s a matter of knowing when it comes in order to properly respond:

• Mesmers usually prepare their bursts in three ways. The first one is by pure positioning: they wait until you are surrounded by clones, then issue the shatter command. So basically, don’t fight surrounded by clones. The second one is by stealth: using Torch #4 for instance, they come close (even teleport) next to you, then Mirror Blade and shatter. In that case, the mesmer disappearing is a sign of some burst incoming, so prepare the dodge/block/invulnerability. The third one is by disabling (lock down), immobilizing or stunning. When you’re disabled, proceed similarly and dodge/block/invulnerability. Endure Pain is your panic button, as it’s also a break stun.
• Thieves always often with a stealth/steal burst, possibly with basilisk venom, and there’s not a lot you can do here – possibly dodge preemptively when you feel the distance becomes dangerous, or activate Endure Pain in the right timing. Now, (bad) thieves will also come for the kill when they see you about half health. You can bait the burst, interrupt it (e.g. shield #4), then burst yourself.

Try and play both classes for a bit, learn to execute their burst techniques, and I’m sure you’ll find yourself soon enough familiar of how to counter them.

Elegie is spot on. It comes down to experience unfortunately. There are two ways to gain daid combat experience against these two classes.

Again elegie has hit both on the head:

1) Either fight them more and learn to see the patterns that they use to fight.
2) play the classes and learn their mehcanics.

Once you do that, you will learn both the limitations and capabilities of your warrior and the mesmers and theifs. Every class has predictable patterns and once you learn to recognize them, you will be able to predict possible positioning that your enemy might be in.

There are also places in wvw and spvp that people spar with one another. Try to do some duels with some mesmers or theif.

But in short, it comes down to experience, unfortunately.

If the thief is good and focused in hide and berserker Dagger damage… you have not so much to do and all you can do is devend yourself and attack when you see he.

I use the axebow build but if I find a good thief I can’t kill him because I can’t see him or because he have so much blind, evade and hide that I miss all my eviscerate and power attacks and he kill me before my Burn do something.

To fight thiefs and mesmers the best is the Hammerbow, that grant you good AoE damage skill, hitting the thief while in hide and destroyng the illusions and hitting the real mesmer with the hammer stun.
