First, my warrior is the 4th 80 for me…Thief, Guardian, Necromancer, Warrior…in that order.

My warrior is like the red-headed kitten child of Arenanet.

I re-trait a few times to add more survivability, but end up dying a little slower. It is so wierd, I have the same HP on my necromancer in Orr and I am able to take on 5+ mobs without much problem. On my warrior, if I am not running with a greatsword and if they are not all in front of me, forget it. I feel squishier than my necromancer and thief.

Finished the story on my warrior, might finish the cursed shore map completion, and then I am done. I loved the warrior up until about lvl 70.

Orr really exposed the true nature and problems of the warrior profession.

That’s how I felt. Warrior was my main and I had a ton of armor on him. But I still felt squishy in dungeons. I retraited and got PVT gear with healing trinkets but I felt a significant drop in damage and I was still getting owned in dungeons, I still needed at least another guardian in the group. Now I have an ele main and it’s much easier to sit in the back and contribute to the group.

I guess I just don’t know how to build a warrior though since everyone else seems to be having success with them.

Are you using either healing shouts/banners? It’s the best ability a warrior has IMO.

I found the warrior to be the easiest profession to grasp, and usually recommend it to newcomers hahaha

Of course it is easy to roll a pure ranged and sit back… but I am trying to find 2 or 3 “main” classes. Maybe one of each armor type. I think the thief will be one of them, I definately like my vampire necro build, but Im going to guess Ill love the ele too.

In any case, Warrior WAS #2 on my list, but now its down at the bottom near the guardian. I put the guardian at the bottom because, to me, theres no synergistic builds for it. At least the guardian has Shout healing builds, hp regen builds, control/damage builds…still squishy as kitten

You need Aoe man… Sword, Axe, and Long bow and if you want to go condition spec do that. I farm in Orr. It is an Aoe delicious place depending on which section you are at. I use Healing signet and have 20 points in defense for the other Hp regen that you benefit off of in defense tree. It keeps you alive for a while.

It’s fun and you can do it with DPS gear (but if you want to face tank you need 1850 toughness). heal sigil + banner regen + adrenal heal + 1850 toughness + hammer 2 weakness and you can tank stuff. Use banner blasts, lb blast and hammer burst to combo off the lb fire field every 10 seconds. Use FGS and SIO for adrenaline (if need be) and more might. Put a battle sigil on a weapon and you can get easy 25 might stacks and 18 aoe stacks.

You can also use the swiftness on banner 3 to get through the dungeon faster.

Omnomberry Bars for DPS warriors. (Heal on crit, no internal cd)

Healing Shouts, or healing standard for tanky warriors.

I find in this game, tankiness is all well and good, but most people seem to forget sustaining yourself through heals is just as important. Hell, you can tank on a glasscannon dps warrior with omnom bars in zerker gear if youre maintaining fury.

Oh, and warrior is fine as is.

In full zerker set normal mobs in Orr die in 1 hundredblades. I don’t see how you can have troubles. Compared to berzerker staff ele it’s a friggin tank with better damage heh.

In full defensive set 2-3 mobs can’t outdamage the self-regen if you move just a little bit (you know, big red circles, telegraphed knockdowns, stuff like that). With omnomberry bar and slight modifications to increase crit chance… again, dunno how could you ever die.

Don’t see the issue with the warrior to be honest.
I’ve had a warrior since I started, and it’s still my main favourite class.
Thing I see the most is that people start playing a warrior on full beserker, works fine but when they reach higher levels, and want to do more dungeons that goes wrong, as long as they want to stay in the melee zone.
One of the things the warrior offers is a lot of diversity (look at all the weapon combinations you can use!)

I personally at the moment run a sort of hybrid build, both damage and defensive skills, keep in mind that i mostly do dungeons on my warrior as i’ve got 100% world map completion on him. This build does not work for PvP at all.

Traits:
Arms : 25
Defense: 15
Tactics: 30

The most important here is the Tactics > I use the ‘shout cooldown reduction’ & ‘shouts heal’ traits.
Next to that, in defense i use the +200 toughness when you have cripple etc.
And in the Arms i feel it is VERY important to use the trait which gives you a stack of might when you crit with a greatsword.

I usually use a greatsword & rifle > if situation requires i change my greatsword to for instance mace/shield.

For utility skills i use Healing surge, followed by 3 shouts, followed by Signet of Rage.

This way i have 4 heals, condition removal, a fear, and constant Fury.

Using Knight’s Armor, and Emerald jewelry.

This way I have around 2000 toughness at all times, i can heal myself and party members for about 1500 with each shout. I have a Healing Surge which gives me healing depending on my adrenaline level.

Damage output on this build is also completely viable.
I do about 800-1000 on a normal hit, and more if i crit. Considering you have about 75% crit chance at all times (as long as you use Signet of Rage) you will crit 3 out of 4 hits.

If it happens i go to a dungeon where the tanking is even harder, i swap my armor set for some more vitality or healing power.

My advice; tweak your traits and weapons till you find something that suits you, if that doesn’t work out, maybe it’s not meant to be!

I agree when reaching Orr I hit a brickwall at first…
Thats not because the Mobs are so strong but rather because the mobs are very close to each other and the very very very short respawnrate makes it very very evry difficult not to add additional mobs by accident.
You need to kill stuff quickly to not add another respawn, you need AOE because 3+ Mobs is no rarity.
Rushing in pulling several mobs and aoe them down wont work here, you need to be careful.

Warriors actually on the strong side when it comes to PvE, so i’m not quite sure why you’re having trouble. If worst comes to worst, equip a lb as your off-set, and kite while spamming aoe damage.

If your fighting more than 3 at once regularly, maybe use axes. GS only hits 3 targets max on autos and 100b. Axe #2 and Axe 5 both hit more than that (and the axe auto attack is the best in the game imo)

I didn’t expect a positive reaction from you guys! Thanks for that.

So… I have geared my warrior for power/precision/crit.

I leveled via axe/axe and greatsword, although when I got to Orr I began running axe/mace and greatsword.

I hit cursed shore and it is very frustrating. I was able to get through straits and malchor’s without a lot of trouble, but now I just feel way more frustrated. The constant pulls backs, the constant knock downs, the constant cripples and immobilize…

I am open to suggestions to up my survivability a bit, get rid of these CCs, and increase damage a bit. Open to new weapon sets too. I haven’t read a lot of your responses in this thread, so I’ll do that now, but keep them coming. Right now the warrior is at the bottom of the list in terms of the “fun” factor for me. Looking to re invigorate that but not getting my kitten handed to me all the time.

So, I read the posts…

Longbow is pretty good for AoE? To be honest, I leveled the warrior to 80 without any ranged weapon. Haven’t needed it. If you say its AoE is pretty good, I’ll give it a try.

I am interested in the shout heals, and I have thought about that, but i tend to pop my shouts like FGJ right as I enter combat to get some burst DPS going. If i traited for heal, used the shout in the beginning, it is useless because I am at full HP. How would you play like this?

Concerning banners: Even traited to reduce CD, I think their cooldowns are rediculously long. Going from mob to mob, fighting a new pack of mobs every 30 seconds or minute…some of the CDs on those banners are crazy long.

And I agree that warriors CAN have great AoE…but in my experience it has only been via greatsword and if they are in front of you. While the # of mobs you can hit may be limited, I don’t think axes are any better. They hit like wet noodles compared to greatsword.

Shout heal warrior is one of the best all rounded build out there.

For your concern about using FGJ right at the fight start, if traited with lung capacity, FGJ is only a 20s shout, i don’t believe if geared right, you really need to use all 3 shout heals within the first 20sec. On the other hand, slung it off is a good choice, especially in heavy condition zone, you will automatic launch a free “shake it off” you got more than 1 condition, and yes, it is shout heal also.

For an effective shout heal build, better gear with cleric gear and that also means your toughness is a lot higher so you are more durable than in berserker gear.

my half cleric half knight geared warrior is healing 1.5k for each shout.

Arent they something like 180 seconds? I could swear that is what I see when I hover over the banners.

Edit: Ive never used a single banner because i saw the cooldown timer as something like 180 seconds…so if picking it up generates only a 6 second cooldown, then I wouldn’t know ;p. I would need to carry it from location to location?

The banner duration listed on the tooltip is wrong. I think it says something like 45 seconds duration. Banners actually last 90 seconds, with the trait the cooldown is brought to 96 seconds. As long as you keep the banner with you, you shouldn’t have to worry about the cooldown.

Some good info there, also some notes on proper banner usage for people who don’t use it often:

If using it where you will need to often be moible, as in Orr farming or WvW, you can drop the banner using the weapons swap key instantly. or you can use the #5 ability to drop with a cast time that produces a blast finisher. (summoning the banner initialy also produces a blast finisher). When it comes to the #2 ability some are handy whilie others are useless. personally I like to use the Banner of Strength as the #2 gives vunrability. So when running up to an opponent I lead with #4 rush, let that attack hit, smack with #2 for vunrability then drop the banner to commence regular attack rotations. Also don’t forget to spam #3 for group speed buff.

Banners ARE clunky, but useful when used correctly. Warriors are a fantastic support class. Even if their controbutions are not as obvious and flashy as an Elementalist or Guardian.

Warrior is going to put out some great damage, they do not have the survivability tools like a guardian, but endure pain and shield block can usually get me through my tough times.

I have always rolled with 20/0/30/0/20 and never had any problem taking out multiple mobs in orr, or in dungeons. I generally go with GS/Rifle for pve, but you can swap out a hammer or bow if you prefer the CC or aoe. I have an 80 Necro and I have felt just the opposite.

If anything I make an effort pick up the banners, regular swiftness, a charge which also gets you places faster, and regen, why on earth would you leave it behind? Also I’ve trained it to last longer, only seems to be a 2 second wait from when it disappears till I can drop another one….

So, I read the posts…

Burst skill is aoe, and skills 2,3,4 are all aoe. Just open fight with with bow (lets say you tag 4-5 mobs), use burst skill to lay down aoe first, then use 3 > 4> 2> switch to melee weapon (most mobs will be half life or lower, and burning) then finish off with 100b or axes or whatever. This is basically what i do when i farm stuff; run around tagging stuff with bow, then cluster them up for aoe.

Call me when this game gets fixed…. if it ever does….

10/0/30/30/0 mace/shield, heal shout build with soldier runes. Go PVT overkill on everything, even jewelry (Emerald gems). Superior Sharpening Stones gives +201 power. Omnomberry Ghost food and Sigil of Blood for lifetaps on crit. Get yourself 25 stacks of bloodlust for another +250 power, and you’ll be running around 3500 attack, 3400 armor, 30k hps, and 20%ish chance to crit (before Fury). Now go back to Orr, crush all before you and listen for the lamentation of the women.

There’s so much random agro and conditions flying around in Orr, a glass cannon-y build is going to have a hard time in some areas.
