Gonna regret what I know to be feeding a troll……but…..what exactly is forcing you to stand back and spam a ranged ability?
I can only assume by “swing swords and go in and fight” you actually mean “melee like in other MMOs…….yeah stand in front or back of mob and spam buttons in a predefined rotation until mob = dead…never having to move” ?
I have had to issues as a warrior mixing up……Sword/AXE about half the time…..Rifle the other.

I only use ranged weapons in WvW if I’m on a wall or shooting someone who is. I haven’t even been there since like lvl 60 either, ‘cause it’s always one team flattening the others boringly, so now that I’ve actually got all my traits and gear it’s probably even easier.
You’re unhappy? You can kill both eles and rangers with your rifle without much difficulty. How do you think they feel?!

I play warrior to play a ranged without pet, I don’t see problem with that. When needed I switched and jump and still wreck havoc. Yes WvW is my bloodbath.
Bull’s rush, Quickness, Endure Pain.
You can now swing your swords really fast for 5 seconds… unless you get CC’d or they roll.

OP is full of fail.
1. Nothing is forcing you to used ranged weapons, you aren’t even kittening yourself by not doing it.
2. Refusing to use ranged weapons because they “aren’t warrior-ish” (which isn’t even true) is goofy.
3. Rangers shouldn’t be the only class that uses ranged weapons, nor should Rangers be only good at using ranged weapons.
4. The purpose of the warrior is to be a power-heavy weaponmaster, which includes things like Longbows and Rifles. This, in fact, makes them very versatile compared to other games, which is awesome.
5. There are people who like the idea of playing a ranged weapon user without a pet, why should their preference be repressed any more than yours?
6. This game rightfully does not define classes as “melee” or “ranged”. Stop pulling your concepts of how classes should be designed from games with terrible class design like WoW.

Dre you’ve likened the most versatile class in this game to a dumbed down ranger which is laughable. I hope you’re trolling and if you are you got me well done.
You mention WvW so I’ll talk about that specifically.
There is no reason you have to use a ranged weapon exclusively or even at all. The fact you can switch to one by weapon swapping and be viable is a testament to the versatility of the class. The vast majority of our weapons and skills are melee oriented. How do you think a ranger feels trying to go melee?
I personally find nothing more gratifying than assessing a stalemate on bridge or at a gate and then making a calculated rush into an enemy formation where I use whirlwind into Hblades and disrupt the entire group in many cases killing several of them. My survival rate doing this isn’t always high in many cases it’s 50% but no other class can do that we’re definitely melee masters.
There are countless smaller skirmishes going on all over the map and at the ourskirts of larger battles you can make a huge difference in without it being the exclusive ranged fest at the walls.
Not sure what else to say I rarely die to ranged alone and find WvW to be a target rich environment even if you melee exclusively.

The issue he is having and I sometimes is the fact that melee is difficult in ZvZ. You must willingly leap into deaths embrace. You must lead by example Dre. Go in and 100 blades those fools and make them move their position. That can’t sit more then 2 seconds. Yes Dre it’s a bit hard to melee in ZvZ, therefore you must stack vit and toughness to survive. In small skirmishes your melee will be very effective. Try doing hit and runs with your melee as well. Rush in, attack. Pop some cool downs and run out.
Fellow warriors, you should be ashamed. He asks about the difficulty in using Melee in WvW and you guys immediately call him out and tell him to go back to wow…. a few of your were constructive.

Playing another game with legit melee really makes it obvious where the OP is coming from. No, it’s not really where it should be. It probably never will be. In WvW in general, one step forward can bring you in range of about 50 people, and you’ll be splintered in a second. It’s not very good gameplay, when your melee players can’t do their job and rush in, swinging, breaking up ranged enemies because they can easily shrug off most of the damage. You’ve got a couple skills (Endure Pain, Shield Block), but after that, you’re toast. And most likely you haven’t done any damage to break up their formations in the process.
I’ve been able to do it using GS strike squads in WvW, but it relies a lot on load in problems and the enemy being balled up, and just wildly swinging like a fool, without a target. There are excuses, but stepping away from GW2 for a while, playing normal games and coming back really has sold me on how terrible the combat is. Good for a MMO, I suppose, but it’s nowhere where it should be, when you consider you don’t have the targeting advantages you would in a normal MMO, and you don’t have to worry about load-ins either.
It’s less about the Warrior, I think, and more about the game, in general. There’s no DR for damage from multiple sources, no intrinsic defense bonus to closing distance to a ranged target, and so on. It’s just not well thought out, and difficult to see for the trees, since we’re already working within the bounds of the game itself and no longer in development.
Funny, that’s exactly the reason why Warrior is my main.

The melee in this game seems pretty legit to me. A lot of people tend to think if they’re not OP they must be broken but getting killed and blown up at times especially to focus fire is called balance. If they made melee any stronger the game would become melee focused instead of balanced. Balance is what we want.
You mention things like diminishing returns or defense bonuses for closing distance etc but we already have so many ways to close the distance and even escape I don’t see why this is necessary. I’ve literally run into huge groups of people blown cooldowns and been focused on and then simply run out again using rush or bullscharge etc. If I get snared or anything I just pop stability or mending. I don’t always escape but if I did it would be broken wouldn’t it? In front of a keep I’m the guy who won’t go down from ranged fire and I can tank damage while I rez other people. Our defenses are already built into our healthpool, traits, skills, and armor. Not sure what more you guys want I feel like a beast out there sometimes and I never pull out my rifle.
Your problem with melee in WvW is that you suddenly become the target of 30 people at once. Can anything really survive that? If you only want to do melee and forget a ranged option you will have to be intelligent about it, don’t become the target of 30 people wait until you have an option to actually attack in melee. Ideally you will find stragglers that you can pin down and destroy. You can take suicidal run ins as animus mentioned and hope your zerg takes that initiative and pushes forward to rez you.
The key is fight smart and use melee in appropriate situations. Nothing is ever going to survive 30 attackers at once for long so you have to stop putting yourself in that situation. I like to use a rifle to build adrenaline until I see a juicy target or a situation that just needs a little push. Then in I dive.

I to am interested in this. What MMO has more legit Melee then this game? WOW? WAR? DOAC?
I’m serious. We have better surviveablity then in any other MMO I can tell. With the right build and timing you can get in some hits and maybe escape with your life. It’t not like the other “legit melee” MMO where ranged stun locks me and kills me almost instantly.
I know it’s not perfect but it’s the best I’ve seen so far. Didn’t try Tera or Rift though guys.
@Proeliator : Maybe look at GW (the first), where there was a auto target for melee. Which means the character was following his target. And the warrior had a really better defense. So there was no need of a gap-closer. The warrior was thought so that he could survive the time to get in melee range.
Currently, if you have no gap closer, it’s really hard. And what advantages does the melee weapon got over the ranged ? A bit more damage.
I think it works for now, but you can just get erased of the map before you got in melee range, even with gap-closer. If, let’s say 2 ranged focus you, you won’t made it. Or you won’t have enough hp in close range to be efficient.
And in a teamfight, melee will probably be the first target.
I’m not sure though that it was what he meant.

Never played GW1 so hard to comment but auto-following your target seems like a pretty dumbed down system that eliminates tactical movements like strafing and circling. Those movements separate good players from bad players very quickly. We also have loads of snares to help as well. If I misunderstand what you meant I’m sorry just not understanding.
As far as the rest of your point you’re main complaints seem to be about getting focus fired by say 2 or more ranged players. Well what do you think is supposed to happen when multiple characters target you? Focus fire is supposed to be able to kill stuff. You guys seem to be focusing on the zerg style of WvW which isn’t really relevant because anyone from melee to ranged gets blown up in WvW when they get focused. If anything we get blown up a lot less because we have more hp, more armor, and more defensive traits, and we have the option to use range if we need to. It’s as Grimshade said if you want to melee you have to be intelligent about it. No you won’t always be able to wade right into an enemy formation at least not alone but if a lone warrior could do that legitimately I’m pretty sure it would be broken or our damage would need to be nerfed so much to compensate I would no longer want to play a warrior.
Melee is already tougher and does more damage in many cases than ranged and can strike multiple targets with auto attack. Not sure what more you guys can ask for without making us OP.

Well even if the above statement is true, warriors really rule melee if spec correctly, even in WvW when outnumbered, in fact when outnumbered or playing against a ranged character, that’s when the melee warrior shines. If played correctly and not a simple minded GS warrior spec.
Grow a pair, equip some melee weapons, and drop that Longbow. You are a warrior, not a kittening Indian (Im joking, but you get the point).
Melee is MORE than viable in WvW.
my Warrior uses dual axes most of the time, i rarely have cause to swap to longbow, that is generally during sieges in WvW and a few events in Dungeons :o

i’m with that guy, sometimes i get 3-4 other melee with brains that go in with me and we wipe out atleast 10 players – most of the time it’s full plated p/t/v stacking powerhouses busy sitting behind elementalists…

I got so excited reading this i molested the trashbin next to my desk in a bloodrage.
In a way I can see where the OP is coming from in regards to WvW and having to use ranged so you don’t get sucked into the many zergs.
I have tried going close many times and it usually results in a rather expensive repair bill.
Just trying to avoid the mass AOE spam up close is a challenge in itself.

Badly, some filthy cowards manage to do so. They’re called “thief”, but I would call them “thugs”.
And when they’re invisible target, it’s just the more annoying thing ever. Especially when they see you ….
I think a lot, not all but a lot, of warriors that say they cant do much in WvW have crap builds or dont know the tactics of melee play and just try to Leroy over everything i run with axe-warhorn/rifle and a shout build and its perfect. I can use my axe the majority of the time and i still have my rifle as a reliable back up and nice spike dmg with the 3 skill.
I love fighting ranged classes, and everything besides a guardi or a thief just get shred to pieces by my axes and I take 2v1s all the time just so long as they are not those 2 before mentioned classes, melee is intimidating and most ranged players dont know what to do once you close that gap and dont let them leave you just gotta know when to rifle and when to melee, it takes finesse.

Melee is just inherently dangerous. It’s not that it can’t be done, but consider for a moment that you’re charging into a group of people (I try to find solo fights, but realistically it hardly happens) who all want to kill you. Worse still, now you’re a very obvious threat to them because you stand out. You’re like the lone red ant that goes ‘lol, life is for wimps’ and charges into a mob of black ants to be torn to little, angry pieces.
Now, if you could just swing your axe into a guy’s head and be done with it, you’d probably stand good odds of catching some off guard and taking them down with you. But killing people instantly is hard(er than that, anyway). So you just get dismembered like that little red ant.
On the other hand, if you got like 6 people on teamspeak/vent/skype/mumble/whatever and all of you charged their disorganized mob at the same time, you might actually be able to scatter them apart and not get pulverized. But if you don’t want to do that, it’s basically just a matter of deciding when some other people will follow you, or you following them, else you get stampeded on.
Oh, and half of them are freaking invisible, so that doesn’t help. But it’s really not the warrior’s fault. If they were somehow awesomer, then the enemy would have that too and you’d still be smushed without good timing.
That invisible in WvW really killed me some times. Like I was ramming gates, and suddenly people around me began to die. It took me some seconds there was some red names flying around. Too much to act quickly enough.

It works there too. Try adding in some Vit or Tough to your gear instead of going full Pow, Prec, Crit. Warrior has some of the craziest survivability traits out of all the classes.

Your point is not valid if you play glass cannon or are sub 80.
I have 2000 kills in WvW and i dont use ranged weapons at all (The rare rifle in puzzles occurs) its the most fun i’ve ever had! I play Kngiths greatsword with axe/sword-shield to back that up! I have also done the CC full knights with hammer and sword shield and perma sprint. Most builds work!
Some how i do agree some points that we have ranged alternatives but they lack dmg or they are single target with very short range , i also do agree on OP about the melee and ranged stuff don’t know how the ranged classes would feel if they where forced to play in melee range and no there is no build what so ever what can save your skiny kitten from the zerg all you get in WvWvW CC over CC till you die unfortunatly in GW2 there are no CC DR they can CC chain you to death which is a bit shame for a 2012 released game , not having control over your character is not somthing what i call fun.
