I need a "wife" build.
Bearbow ranger is what you want.
^ Ranger has more personal safety and even less buttons to worry about.
Soldiers is really boring though, I would suggest a Zerker/Knight’s mix so she can experience the crits on Rifle and feel powerful. GS is also very unwieldy since you have to move a lot with it to stay safe.
I would use Axe/Shield since all she needs to do when surrounded is go into Shield Stance and run away, and Axe can clear out mobs pretty quickly. If she spams her stances and F1, she can keep Adrenal Health running and keep her topped off.
Switch things out if she wants Crack Shot, without Warrior’s Sprint on your melee set you might need Warhorn for the swiftness.

Thanks, that sounds like a good phase 2. Today I was just looking to make the best of what she has already. Someone suggested this on metabattle discord chat, with runes switched to Pack. someone on metabattle discord suggested this build for her character http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vJAQJAURjMdQfHW3BOeAnIG6BKc37hc4mjTI7tA4DWaA-e
Probably switch forceful greatsword to body blow though. She’s not switching weapons much.
The stipulation was guns and you didn’t think engineer?
Anyway, Rifle and Signets make a good pair. The signet trait is in Arms which also has the trait for guaranteed crit on burst skills. Crack Shot is in Discipline which has Burst Mastery. All this combines for satisfying Killshots.
You might consider something like this: Wifle Warrior
Arms and Disciple synergy previously explained. Defense is added for Adrenal Health and Cleansing Ire which further add to Killshot synergy, plus some other goodies. I chose Cavalier armor for the power, toughness, and ferocity. With guaranteed crits; ferocity is a must. Toughness converts to more power via trait and helps with defense (pairing very well with Adrenal Health’s and Healing Signet’s regen). You can get Cavalier at the Temple of Balthazar, the first Temple you’ll reach in Orr, and buy it for karma. Armor can be kinda pricey, so this will help save her more valuable gold. Rage runes are relatively cheap and increase ferocity and general damage with Fury (from Arms and Signet of Rage). Sigil of Frailty adds a easy source of vuln for Rifle synergy. It’s also available for free during the leveling process, but you’re boosting so that’s moot. Sigilof Cruelty is relatively cheap to obtain and increases Ferocity, but could be replaced with whatever you want if it’s too much of a hassle.
It’s a straightforward build that gives great satisfaction from a frequent, but not constant, source of HUEG KITTEN NOMBUHS while being quite cheap. It should help hold immediate interest in the game long enough for additional curiosity to take root. Once that happens, the gloves can come off and you can get a more appropriate build for the content.
I made a warrior when I first started, but actually put it to the side and rolled an engineer to finish the pve story. Found it much easier, and it has both rifle and pistols, which might appeal to your wife.

I hear nothing but complaints about how hard eng is to operate with all the buttons and how it’s one of the more complicated classes. Haven’t tried one myself.
All good suggestions above. However, the thief doesn’t have to be glassy, you could beef it up and still give her a fast paced pew pew capable of open world, add SB and it’s just more pew pew.

She’s still got the toon and might go back to it later. She needed something that could get beat on more though, she is pretty rooted in fights. As she gets more comfortable in the game that will hopefully change. I didn’t like any click to target attacks when I started a month or so ago either.
If you end up getting the expansion for your wife, Thief is also getting a Rifle which is rather stationary. It would actually work pretty similar to Killshot warrior. It should take ~10s to build up full malice stacks, at which point shee could kneel and #4 for over 100% extra damage. Runes of the Daredevil or Critical Strikes line would grant auto crits. If she keeps the Thief along with her Warrior, that would be a great place to transition to a new class.
I was worried when my girlfriend decided to roll an Engi, but she enjoys it alot. With P/P Condi and flamethrower for the incendiary she mops stuff up without a lot of button spam. A lot of the time for open world I see her just flamethrower anything and everything. She really likes the flamethrower.
Always Roaming

Engi can get complicated, but I just used a rifle build with elixers and Knight’s gear. It was super easy.

You mention problems concerning rmb and autotargetting. Has your wife tried the Action Camera Mode?https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Action_Camera_Mode
I too remember having issues when I started playing. I have been using Action Camera since HoT and it makes targetting and movement way easier. It has some limitations but I would say it is very beginner friendly.
Also, with rifles it is nice since you get a targetting reticle, that stays center of the screen and lets you aim and turn with your mouse at the same time.

Nope, she hasn’t. I havn’t even looked into that, I’ll check it out and have her try it. Thanks.
I suggest the following:
1. If she wants to stay with Warrior; A fun and easy build in open world is Axe/Axe with Rifle or Bow as a secondary
2. Is she will try engineer its super easy for open world pve for the core game. All she needs to start is pistol/pistol or rifle and use flamethrower. Once she switches to flamethrower all she will do is use the first attack almost exclusively and then add healing and the other secondary skills, like turrets as she needs them.
3. Ranger and Necromancer are also very easy since you can have your pet(ranger) or minions (necro) act as a tank while you attack away. Ranger uses longbow and shortbow or another secondary and necro uses staff and has many options for secondary depending upon desired impact and play style.
Any of the three above are easy to use. Ironically the warrior may be the hardest to use of the ones I mentioned, but all are quite easy to pick up and feel successful with quickly.
Cleric Rifle + Turrets engineer was one of the easiest builds that I ever tried playing in PvP. I’m not sure how it would be in PvE though.
