It deals 90% of 100b while allowing you to move. Sure, Axe/Axe is terrible, because MH Axe #1 does more DPS, but if paired with, say, a Sword in a power build, it actually does okay damage and cleaves really well.

So I made this build:

Sure, it doesn’t have a place in an organized team, because it doesn’t quite have the mobility of a Thief to be a good roamer, but it deals good damage, can actually fight on point and can somewhat move around thanks to Savage Leap.

MH Sword has Final Thrust, but if you miss or the target is still alive, you can use Whirling Axe to continue the pressure, instead of having to rely on the weaksause #1. And if you actually put the target down, WA cleaves better than Axe #1.

I’ve played something similar right after the September patch, for a few months, and it was tons of fun, and quite strong in duels (but less so in 1vX). Thieves, in particular, suffered quite a lot to it. Variations that I tried included:

  • Switching Leg Specialist for Dual Wielding – I liked both.
  • Switching Dogged March for Missile Deflection.
  • Switching Defy Pain for Rousing Resilience (RR). RR activates each time you trigger the Balanced Stance, whether you break from stun or not, which is quite useful when you prepare a melee burst. When doing so, I did keep Endure Pain equipped in place of your signet. Also I think that Rampage works similarly (no need to break stun for RR to trigger – not sure about it though).
  • Getting a sigil of fire on the offhand axe, because a 15-hit is sure to proc a crit,
  • Putting the sigil of intelligence on the axe rather than the sword (but it is fine as you’ve put it as well).

These days, I’ve kept the sword+axe, but replaced the axe/shield by a bow, and the berserker amulet by a celestial one. This forms new useful synergies, and the damage isn’t that bad (between 8k and 10k for the whirlwind), with additional condition pressure. The AoE from the bow is useful (the original build is a bit weak against enemies with adds: necros, mesmers, engis…).
