So I’m trying to learn pvp. In ranked I have 11 wins and 38 losses. In unranked 92 wins and 117 losses. I got out of amber mostly on breaking 5-8 game losing streaks a couple of times. I’ve played about 5 games in emerald and haven’t won any.

I started using the gs/hammer rampage build on metabattle, and found that I could usually win 1 v1 fights with certain classes like rangers at my skill level as long as Rampage wasn’t on cooldown (and it seems to have a reaaaaly long cooldown). The main problems with the build was that hammer seems useless and rampage was on cooldown too long. Really long wind up/cast times on the hammer and then most classes seem to have stability up 50-75% of the time so it doesn’t apply the cc it’s designed to. People either just dodge away during the 1 second cast time on hammer skills or have stability. Plus the build seemed really bad against reapers and you see 2 of those in most matches, I couldn’t do enough damage to outsustain their shrouds, again especially if rampage was on cooldown. It’s also very confusing to be in team melee fight with 5 necro pets, 4 mesmer clones, ranger pets, and 3 enemies.

Then I tried gunflame. Teammates often criticize me for using this build, but I find it a little bit more fun than the rampage hammer/gs. At least it’s a little easier to pick an appropriate target at range. While I can kite reapers pretty well, I have to be cautious about reflects and “bunker” druids, elementalists or guardians who I can’t kill fast enough in 1 v 1 before it turns into a 1 v 2. Obviously I can’t fight anyone on point either, which is a problem since pvp is all about fighting on point.

So as you can see I’m pretty bad and pvp is not very fun when I only when about 35% of my games. Should I just hang it up if warrior is the class I want to play or should I stick with it and try to get better? Does anyone else have win rates this low when they are starting out? Sure I get a disconnecter or quitter about 10-20% of the time but I’m pretty sure a lot of the losses are due to me being no good.

Is there another build I should be trying? Should I just stick to unranked to try to improve?

Thanks.

I assume you’re talking about these two builds?:
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_GS/Hammer
and
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Berserker_-_Gun_Flame

Said bluntly, Warrior is the worst PvP class in the game. If you’re new, playing Warrior won’t help you get accustomed to Conquest’s basics; there’s more to it than 1v1 or 5v5 in a circle, and more often than not things like rotating correctly, knowing when to run/stand out of the circle, and preventing the decap/cap or grabbing the decap/cap, will all matter more than how good your class is… but, playing the worst class when you don’t even know any of that, just makes it that much harder.

Gun Flame is the better build, but it’s also more unforgiving. MetaBattle’s take on it abandons every safety net Warrior has for more damage, and while that might work in a niche counter-comp setup (e.g. Gun Flame Warrior vs. 2 Necros & 1 Rev, no Ele/Engi on enemy team), you can’t count on that kind of luck every round.

If you are hard-set on sticking with Warrior despite everything I’ve said, I’m going to recommend you try a more balanced variant for about 3~10 rounds, and report back with how it treats you:
http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?vJAQJAURnMdA1dgVhAehAElilqATJr14yBvj2W7sFZx1ACAA-TpBFABiXGohjAg6HCga2fAgHAABXAAA

Changes to note:
-Head Butt for a stun, stun break and adrenaline.
-Cleansing Ire for much better condition cleansing in Berserk mode.
-Dead or Alive and Marauder amulet for +10K HP over the meta build.
-Eternal Champion for rolling stability in Berserk mode (saves you your stun breaks; use Berserker Stance to counter Fear if Feared).
-Pack rune and Sigil of Agility for much higher Swiftness/Fury uptime and some Quickness on Hundred Blades.

Ultimately this third build won’t solve all of your problems even though it’s more defensive, but it will give you a little more time to process what’s going on and give you a better chance at either stalling in a 1v1 (you don’t want to 1v1, but solo queue teams don’t know that and won’t rotate you out to save you) or running away when the fight is bad (something the meta build can do— if you and your team are sharp about it).

Good luck with PvP. If you’re not sure about sticking with Warrior, I’d recommend Scrapper for a defensive/consistent melee class or Revenant for a very bursty melee class that’s more unforgiving if you’re clueless.

Thanks, I will try some of these modifcations to the meta builds out. Point taken on rotation and basic map awareness/knowledge making more of a difference than class. I’m trying to get better at that and at least warrior greatsword is pretty good at moving around the map fast.

Run a shield set in place of hammer. Hammer was good for team fights when stability was not as abundant. At the moment, it is too easily accessible for hammer to really make an impact. Plus you have no rev protection with a hammer.

I run my war with Paladins amulet, Rifle Sword/Shield, similar to what ive run in the past.

Shield is invaluable for dealing with all the aoes every other class brings, from DH traps to Reaper bursts, and Mesmer shatter bursts. Combines with the shield trait, you can make a lot of classes regret fighting you

Rifle has a lot of utility once you get used to it, and gunflame is frankly awesome, huge range, piercing, daze, and high damage.

One thing to note, it’s a lot harder for any melee nowadays due to the amount of aoe dmg some classes can bring, but it can still be done, you just have to be a lot more mobile.

I rarely lose in 1v1’s, whether against reapers, chronos, or others, however scrappers can basically hard counter my build if they’re any good (Have won plenty of 1v2’s as well)

Also keep that in mind, a lot of classes carry reflect, so be careful with shooting lol, luckily wars have awesome weap swap speed, so just swap to melee when they pop reflects.

As for hammer, I loved it, the amount of cc you can do is insane, and against low stab comps, you can destroy, but I agree with the others, it’s just not as effective right now in pvp team fights. (I haven’t tried Rifle/Hammer though, which might be a nice midground, more cc/aoe with less defense/mobility)
