Guild Wars 2

This may seem stupid, but I am new to the game and can find no reason this is happening.

I have a Norn Warrior, 42nd level, with appropriate, normal gear.

When my character gets knocked down, they fight to get back up, using keys 1 through 4, like all other classes/ races. However, a small percentage of the time(30% or so), the character gets back up immolating ( I am talking dark Phoenix here) and no matter what I do I can’t put them out. I have tried using the signet of stamina to remove conditions- nada. Tried hitting F1 as soon as they get back up- nada. Healing- nada. underwater- nada. The character immolates to death and I have to either teleport to a waypoint or, if in an instance, start over.

Please help me understand what is happening.

I think maybe you mean Vengeance? If you hit 3 when it’s off cool down you’re going to Vengeance.

I haven’t trained discipline at all. How can I have a skill that I haven’t trained?

Discipline only buffs the skill. Does state number 3 is Vengeance. Notice when you use it the icon will show up with your buffs.

“Rally and fight normally for a brief time. You have a chance to fully rally if you kill an enemy. When the vengeance ends, you are defeated.”

Yeah, it’s Vengeance for sure. If you use it to get up from downed state, then you have a 25% chance to clear it each time you kill something before the timer runs out.

As mentioned by Tinnel, the Discipline trait makes that a 100% chance to clear Vengeance if you kill something in time.
