I’ll start with a TL;DR first for those that can’t bother to read. I’ll be more thorough in the explanation after.

TL;DR: Fresh level 80 wondering if I should go Power/Vitality/Toughness or Power/Precision/Toughness for tank and/or melee specs.

The reason I am asking is two-fold. First of all, I do not have the eyesight to accurately see the AOE circles, meaning I really do not want to be in Berserker gear. I have a hard time watching the faint red outline as it is, and added ground effects and ability spam just makes it hard on my eyes. No, I am not a bad player, I just do not accurately perceive red shades as well, so being able to last a bit longer before being downed is important for me.

That said, I do not really know if I want to be a tanky build or a DPS build. I am guessing P/P/T is the way to go for DPS excluding Berserker, but what about tanky builds? Is P/V/T viable? Or is the entire P/P/T + Omnomberry pies supreme over P/V/T?

I am asking because I have about 600 Ascalonian Tears (500 for the Gift, for future Legendaries) and I am wondering if I should keep running just to get a P/V/T set. Is it even valuable to run with P/V/T?

Would depend on if you are going to use GS/Axe/Rifle or not in my opinion.
Those three weapons benefit the most out of crits while the other weapons can stick a big middle finger at crit chance and not care.

lv80 with skills fully unlocked, warrior, elementalist and engineer
lv80 Necromancer, all professional skills unlocked, working on the final norn elite skills.

Allow me to answer your question with a question; what are you interested in doing? PvE, WvW, or both?

I would see myself going GS/Axe/Rifle primarily since that is what I used when leveling, but I am open for alternatives if it fits the set. Getting an exotic weapon ain’t a problem.

@Attic: I would see myself going for both. I like both PVP and PVE in more or less in equal amounts.

why don’t the “other weapons” need crit chance?

A big part of swords damage is actually condition damage + mobility and critical hits aren’t that useful when you look at its traits.
Mace is more about control than anything else
Hammer is also the same (contol based)

You can still be effective with those weapons with 4% critical chance, where as with the axe/gs/rifle if you don’t have critical chance + damage your damage suffers a lot which isn’t that priority for those weapons named above.

Could you say more than that? Why exactly is PPT better for a tank, for instance? I can see why damage dealing would benefit from PPT, but why not PVT for a tank?
