You might have some moderate success with Hammer killing trash mobs in dungeons, but really for a full-time spec Hammer is terrible for PvE. When it comes to bosses, due to defiant, your CCs will very rarely work, and that’s additionally a direct 20% cut off your Hammer damage due to not being able to proc Merciless Hammer.

if you want to cc trash mobs, you’d be better off just running another spec and swapping out a hammer for the trash pulls

I use a Greatsword/Hammer build. It’s 30/25/0/0/15. Typical max DPS build, but instead of Axe/Mace it’s a Hammer. I really like Hammer for the defense it provides against trash, also using skills 5, 2, and 4 can do extremely high damage, I’ve done up to 21K with all 3 combined. Which my average Hundred Blades is around 25K. So I’m sure in a proper Might/Vulnerability stacking group you could pull 30K+ with those 3 skills

Yeah, for dungeon scenarios hammer can hold you back a bit since the CC doesn’t get you the same mileage. However, it can help strip down defiant stacks, which can be good in its own right.

For general PvE though you can almost always run anything, so hammer can work well. It can also have pretty high damage in an AoE, although it comes out a bit slow.

A build I commonly use is as follows:

I don’t really think it’s that great a build, but it’s fairly durable and has both ranged and melee capabilities. The naturally high power gives you significant base damage so you can easily hit for over 1k on your auto-attacks with the hammer, one of which is in an AoE. Signet of rage can give you fury to help you crit for even more. It’s designed mostly to sit on adrenaline and benefit from the passives, although popping it for the AoE stun is available when needed. It got a nice boost when they buffed stomp. I use a modified version of this for WvW.

One of the main disadvantages is that it’s fairly slow, although this is less important in PvE. Signet of rage can be popped to help mitigate this. It also doesn’t have terrific burst potential, focusing more on sustained damage rather than bursts. The CC chains can be very useful in WvW though, especially if you have someone with you that does high spike damage, or you’re able to force someone to the edge of the cliff. Dolyak signet can also be popped if you need help securing a stomp. This build can do fairly well in dungeons too since it doesn’t keel over from a few scratches and provides some AoE and CC potential, but I don’t think it’s optimal for that scenario. It also has next to no defence against conditions, although you can put in dogged march and cleansing ire to help that out. I usually rely on the hoelbrak runes with lemongrass poultry soup to help protect against conditions. It might be worth looking at signet of stamina as well.

I haven’t played around with this much with the last patch, but I’ve been wanting to see if I can move away from signets.

In any case, hopefully this gives you some idea to start with and you can make a better build from it that suits your playstyle more.

Traits are 30/25/0/0/15 as I mentioned, taking ?/IX/XI in Strength. V/X in Arms. and VI in Discipline.

Armor is Berserker’s with Ruby Orbs, Berserker Jewelery with Ruby Orbs. Greatsword has a Superior Sigil of the Night on it, Hammer has Force. Both weapons are Berserker.

Utilities are Healing Signet, love it since the update. Could use Healing Surge as well. For Great Justice, Banner of Strength, Banner of Discipline, Battle Standard.

If there’s 2 Warrior’s in the group, make sure ya’ll aren’t running the same Banners, me and a guildy use For Great Justice, On My Mark, and Banner of Strength/Discipline when we run together on our Warriors.

As far as Battle Standard goes, depends on the dungeon and situation. In a Dungeon like AC path 1, I use Signet of Rage because I need Swiftness alot for burrow destroying/gathering scepter pieces/running. But in a dungeon like CoF I’ll use Signet of Rage to take down the turrets/Charr at the start then go Battle Standard the rest of the way for party DPS boosting.

The weapons work pretty much like Greatsword and Axe/Mace. I’ll build Might with my Greatsword then use Hammer 2/4/5 in some order plus an auto-attack or two, then switch back to Greatsword. I don’t always remember to switch to my Hammer though or sometimes save it for when we need a burst of CC
