PvP-wise, my warrior sucks.
i do a lot of WvW and no Spvp so this is from that perspective
i play in full knights armor with a mix of knights jewelry and rabid jewelry. taking the trait line of 10/30/20/10/0
the build is for using the sword and shield with bolas and fear me as your utilities, for you last utility and elite i like to use the signet of stamina and rage for the obvious reason that both signets have some of the best activates of all of the signets.
when you take the appropriate traits (aka leg specialist, bleeding, last stand) then i find that the sword and shield warrior is amazing at catching and immobilizing people in a fight. if you have noticed in WvW if you get immobilized in a group fight then that more or less means that you die. 2 aoe immobilizes, and a 5 seconds ranged one mean that you are going to be catching and bleeding a lot of thieves.
the only classes that i’ve fought that my sword and shield warrior has a lot of difficulty killing are DD ele’s and necro’s, and that’s mainly because they can shed 15 stacks of bleed and immobilize easily and cleanly.
(also there is nothing more satisfying then seeing the full auto attack combo go off when looking for an invisible thief and hitting flurry. and the bleed numbers don’t suffer from culling issues so they can’t hide behind that so much anymore)
Warriors are awesome sauce in WvW, particularly when rolling around with a group. They’re immensely powerful and let you bully your opponents down. The main issue they have is that they lack escapes, and need supporting teammates to prevent being kited to death. With support, you just have to play like you’re invincible and win off the havoc that causes.
You’re right that they aren’t terribly strong in 1v1 situations, they just get kited to death.
Warriors don’t bunker well and don’t burst hard enough to explode a bunker before reinforcements arrive, so they don’t have a role in minigames. The minigames are a very extreme game mode with totally different objectives than the rest of the game and some really wacky incentives, so I wouldn’t want to give it much weight when it comes to class quality.
You initiate fights for your allies as a mobile Tank. That is.. if you have any friends

Play this build at your own risk though, you’re probably going to want to switch back to glass cannon like everyone.

Disclaimer: I only WvW so this may not apply as well in spvp
OP, I was having a similar experience. I tried axe/shield knight, hammer knight, gs knigh, apothecary sword/shield. Each one was okay, but I felt like I was always fighting an uphill battle. I did well enough in a zerg/medium group setting, however that isn’t an indicator of a strong build. Being dangerous 1v1 and small group is.
I always felt like I was just a little out of range, a little too slow, or a little less dpsy and always less survivable. The exception was the gs/fenzy/100b build, but we all know what the deal is with that thing as far as CDs, counters, and flexibility.
Since then, I’ve shifted to full serkers and X/shield. I’ve pretty much ruled out mace because, although with some good traiting, it hits like a truck, you are greatly hampered by blinds, blocks, and dodges due to its slow attack speed. Next, I’m looking at sword and axe.
Basically, I decided, our passive defense is worthless when compared to range, stealth, or insane mobility. Damage avoidance is just wildly superior to mitigation in this game.
Now, I try to achieve damage avoidance through just burning people down. Once you get someone, “on the ropes”, a warrior can be pretty frightening because of our mobility or cc.
You are playing the most bleh class in GW2. Little availability to various conditions, few damage avoidance options, mediocre burst aside from 100b and evis. We are a well rounded class, but in the world of videogame balance, being good at everything means whoever you are fighting is better than you at something. The ones who don’t exploit that advantage… you will probably kill. The ones who do… will probably kill you.
I play the warrior out of love and a past massive time commitment I don’t want to squander. In the current state of the game, if I wanted to always win, I’d play a thief.
