Shield warrior
Axe main hand has more straight damage attacks with its high auto attack dmg, Burst skill, vuln stack on axe 2, and a cripple to stay on your target.
Mace is for control and mitigation. the Burst skill is a long stun, the daze on mace 3 is good for the quick interrupt, and the mace two is a nice mini-block.
So for the “better” of the two it depends on what you want, to do the damages or to be more support-y.
If you want to ditch the ranged weapon, which btw is risky for dungeons when you start doing those but totally fine while leveling, theres the Hammer for control, greatsword for the 100 Blades and some mobility, or doing mace/axe/sword off hand. All have their strengths and weaknesses.
Best advice for your lvl right now would be to play around with all the weapons. see which combo you like most then try to make it work.
Actually, ditching ranged weapons is the first thing you should do when you start running dungeons.

Depends on the dungeon. Some bosses are just not melee-able. I would never fight Gigantus or some of the fractal bosses with my greatsword.
Then you need a dose of learn to play.

hmmm so i think either ill go axe/shield with hammer or mace/shield with greatsword… what do you guys recommend?
Bringing a shield to a dungeon is usually a waste. Against some bosses you could probably get nice spikes with reflective blocking, and it can save your butt in a pinch, but otherwise you will be sacrificing a lot of utility or DPS.
Any half serious warrior here will recommend 30/0/0/10/30 axe/mace + gs for you.
GS has hundred blades/whirlwind and axe/mace has two sources of vulnerability, and if ever needed, a nice little knockdown.

Assuming you’re doing PvE and don’t care about breaking any records… use whatever you most like watching the animation of. This is a very easy game.
WvW build: Hammer / Mace/Shield build. Full CC blasting. Can literally stun/daze/knockdown someone from 100% health to dead. The main con is no mobility like sword or greatsword offers. However, the key is to build it based on Hoelbrak Runes, Dogged March, and Lemongrass food and pick up Berserker’s Stance (for fighting thieves) and Endure Pain for getting away or fighting GC players when stuns are down.
I push 3500 toughness with shield and mace. Pretty nice when coupled with condition duration reductions that push 90% on immobilizes.
A common rotation with cleansing ire (due to a great amount of adrenaline gain) is to start with Hammer – Backbreaker, Staggering Blow, Earthshaker, switch to mace, Pommel Bash, Shield Bash, Skullcrack. Typically dead, no matter the class unless they used stability. Even if they do most players only pick up one form of it and you can quickly adapt with a new stun within seconds do to burst mastery and cleansing ire. I don’t use cleansing ire per say for the condition removals it’s for the adrenaline gain. However, those necros and the like that eat food that increases condition duration by 40% it cancels my lemongrass so this can be helpful.

pretty much this. There is no 100% perfect set up for everything.
I carry a bunch of different weapons with me all the time. Some bosses are less dodge intensive than others, and some trash mobs require more CC. You gotta learn to adapt.
Hey guys i really appreciate the advice! Im trying out axe/shield and hammer and im having fun with it, it might not be the best weapon combo but it’s pretty good in my opinion but ill keep trying other stuff too.
axe/shield hammer is an amazing weapon set.
it allows you great control, impressive damage rotations and plenty of survivability. personally i wouldn’t buy into these “pro” warriors telling you to run 30/0/0/10/30. run what you want, but the defense line offers a lot of great utility that you probably don’t want to miss out on.
shield is a great weapon in dungeons, do don’t always have the luxury of timing your dodges perfect. and you can’t practice if you are constantly dying. good use of the shield will allow you to do a lot of things that benefit your team (aside from not having to be resed) such as face tanking certain bosses (AC) eating spikes for your team without dying (AC, HotW, CoE) buying time for your team (CoF) and grouping mobs (all dungeons)
Hey Fiorrello ya i could not agree more! I ran CM today with that combo (and i use shouts because i like to help my team in some ways) and i was doing quite well!

Have you meleed Arah p1 ooze before?

Lets point out one of the extremely rare exceptions in a poor attempt to invalidate colesy’s post.
Giganticus Lupicus, in the post I responded to can be melee’d, in 13.667 seconds if I recall correctly.

My post was about those few instances. I have seen a few solo gigantus videos, but in an actual team-fight with a PUG he’s a lot tougher (not being able to predict moves as easily, party members not specced in certain areas, etc.). And most likely you’re not soloing Arah. I will take my rifle on Gigantus over a Axe/Axe any day of the week when actually doing Arah with a PUG.

I’m not trying to invalidate your overall point – I melee most content but asking players to ditch all their ranged weapons is just bad advice for the rare encounters when you do need one.
