Depends what you want to run gear-wise. Shouts are better with Soldier runes because you never worry about conditions anymore. Add healing gear and they can heal for around 2.2k a pop.

The difference is really that you need healing gear to shout whereas you can get by with something else stats-wise with a banner set up. The issue with banners is moving them or being stuck with an off CD, sometimes people are hardheaded and won’t bring a banner even after you ask.

Bottom line: they are both good in different ways. If you can afford it, you really cant beat the condition removal spam though.

I’ve only started running dungeons at 80 but I do axe/warhorn with 2 shouts and one banner, +elite banner skill. I spec x/x/15/30/x (none of the other traits really seem to matter) taking banner cooldown, warhorn cond. removal, and banner regen traits. I might switch to 3x shouts once I slot all Soldier’s runes…it’s a tough call.

In WvW I always go with Banners. A lot of times it’ll serve as a rallying point when the group spreads itself too thin and it ticks pretty well when I’m wearing Cleric’s. The Blast Finisher combos can also be pretty good.

Depends in PvE, shouts are usually better and are more dynamic and work well even if you aren’t speccing for the traits.

Banners however in PvE are really a hit or miss function, they are either a asset or just completely outclassed. In WvW they are phenomenal if you have the regeneration trait and healing stats, each banner gives about 10 players permanent regeneration.

[Banner warrior here]
Shouts are easier to use in moving battles and get lot of condition removal (shake it off/rune of Soldier). However, they need +healing gear to really use them effectively. Also, when running a shout build, it’s better to have all 3 most used shouts as utilities, which leaves no place for other skills.

Banners are much better when holding a position or fighting in close quarters, where you(and your peers) stay close enough to get the buff+regen buff (which stacks to really long durations). You don’t need much +healing gear and can perfectly do with 2 banners as utilities (1 banner and elite banner) leaving 2 more utilities for condition removal/control… Also, almost perma-swiftness when holding a banner and banner’s #5 is a blast finisher.
On the other hands, they can be a chore to move around and players sometimes don’t know what to do with them (leave them behind, pick them up by mistake or just steal them for the perma-swiftness and run away :-) )

…I like banners more…

Banners are fun to play around with too. Find different ways to stick em on the environment when you’re waiting around. I like displaying them sideways on walls. Would be cool if you could stand on banners. Might make jumping puzzles more interesting. >:P

I would only recommend Shouts for the ability to cure conditions. (With knights runes ofcourse)
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Superior_Rune_of_the_Soldier
The healing done by the shouts is not all that great, but being able to cure conditions from allies still makes this build very viable.
Plus you get to hear your character yell stuff during battle! There’s nothing better than that

I like the burst heal ability of shouts and of course soldier runes make it extra awesome. I do like healing banners, but people seem to ninja them in wvw and someone might need to confirm this, but the healing may not always put healing on You if there are a large number of people around the banner (like a zerg)

When I use healing banners, I just switch out one shout (on my mark) for a banner so I can still remove conditions fine. ( to be honest I only run 2 shouts in mostly in wvw with defy pain replacing third shout) and in dungeons I tend to swap out the third shout for balanced stance often enough.

It really is just a matter of flipping a few traits while your out of combat so just try both, if you get bored with one switch it up for a few days and use the other.

Shouts are easier to use in moving battles…

Banners are much better when holding a position or fighting in close quarters…

This is my exact mentality. My play style tends to be very mobile, constantly moving from place to place, so banners don’t appeal to me so I go with shouts. I do love though that Shouts and Banners are on the same tree; if I am traited for healing shouts, I can always switch over quickly to healing banners and swap slots on the bar.

Plus you get to hear your character yell stuff during battle! There’s nothing better than that

I love hearing FOR GREAT JUSTICE every 20 seconds… some of my non-warrior teammates, not so much. I always remind them though, that they at least get a bonus from having to listen to it. For my necro condition damage guild mates, I can take credit for up to 10 points of each tick of bleed.

It’s also fun to mash shouts together…

Shout warriors heal more then banner warriors.
however shout warriors use up all 3 of their utility slots however, while banner warriors only use one. This frees up slots for balanced stance or frenzy.

The banner that increases crit damage by 10% +FOG also provides a pretty big boost to team damage output. Depending on the group that makes the banner warrior provide more “team” dps.

Also just because everyone is saying use soldier runes. There is a more DPS version of shout-heal warrior that stacks boon duration using water-monk-fire runes for the perma-fury and stacking might that is completely valid.

I play shout warrior but I play with a group, and im pretty much 30def/30tac/10str, draconic or valkyrie i forget (its power/vitality) knights gear with sword/warhorn and longbow (selfish reasons, I like to tag as many people as possible for loot :P) . I use cleric amulets/rings and i am enjoying it, but yeah i dont kill many people but im clearing conditions, healing, elite skill bannering and leaping around, its fun. Also for stragglers #5 bow/leap/hamstring usually means they’re not going too far.

Soldier runes i am using on both my sets (draconic/knights)

Warriors are viewed as gimp ive found, so im always attracting damage and the extra time it takes them to kill me usually means my team mates have got them.

It is probably not effective, but it suit my playstyle, im not s charge in, 100b and die person.

If i get over longbow, id probably go mace/shield or hammer for cc/stuns.

Disclaimer, i didnt make my build, i stole t from forums/skillbuilders and just changed a few things to suit… ie the skill that knocks people over when you drop on them, its just FUN

Shouts:
- mobility
- burst healing
- condtion removal
- shout effects
- still effective with low healing power
- 5 target cap for heals
- usable while CCed
- instant cast

Banners.
- group utility and mobility
- banner effects (some are superior to shouts effects)
- effects affect all allies in range
- massive regen when in healing gear
- mediocre/poor regen in no healing gear
- regen has a 5 target cap, but ticks so often it can spread to double that amount.
- blast finishers
- clunky

What we can infer from the above is that shouts work the best in small/medium sized strike teams or parties, or in zergs where superior regen is already provided. This doesn’t require much healing power to be effective, but more healing is still good.

Banners work better in larger groups, or small teams holding a point where regen is inferior or absent (especially when combined with high survival stats and traits). This does require a high amount of healing power though.
