So you hate fighting Mesmers?
Mesmer sees berserker buff.
He casts explode.
Warrior is hit by explode for 18000 damage.

OP never said anything about using Berserk buff and by the look of his build, probably doesn’t…..
I am using the trait “shouts recharge 20% faster” rather than the “auto shake it off” trait. Is one better than the other or is this a personal preference?
Conditions are a big deal in WvW. Chances are that if you are in melee range you will be hammered with them.
“Shouts recharge 20% Faster” or “Shrug it Off”
Well I have tried out Both. The Reasoning behind choosing “Shrug it Off” over the other one is that when Coupled with the “Vigorous Shouts” trait & “Rune of Soldier” you are getting a free 1400ish heal and free removal of 2 conditions Every 30 Seconds.
Free meaning you don’t have to think about it. It just happens as a result of being where you should be, And that is Fighting the Mesmer with crap Tons of HP & HP renewal & Condition Removal.
If you’re Choosing “lung capacity”, then you are opting out of the Passive Heals and Condition Removal, for faster Shout Recharges. This is a great option too, if you are able to spam and time those shouts really well. But the 20% does not fully translate into a fourth shout of your choice, if thats what your thinking.
Having tried Both options out, I can say that with “shrug it Off” i am using my actual shouts less often, and when I actually need them instead of trying to twist them like a bard might, just to take advantage of the 20% for “lung capacity”. This free’s up my Mind and Body to focus on the fight and what that blasted Mesmer is doing.
On A Side Note, “shrug it off” casts “shake it off” every 30 seconds, and that includes a Stun-breaker as well as Condition Removal x2 and a 1400ish Heal.
Keep in mind, this only works really well with the Rune of the Soldier. This gets you the Double Condition removal, on any “Shake it Off”, and that is where using “shrug it off” really shines. You can remove 4 conditions in the blink of an eye, and still have two shouts left over.
With this Combination, I am able to stay in a fight for a very long time. I have counted 1v6 for a full “12 Mississippi’s”. This is a Long time to stay alive against 6 people. And most of that time im just Circle Strafing, using my CC abilities with my hammer, and dodging once in a while.
How do I do this? “Turtles Defence” in the defence trait line. This give me an Extra 200 toughness when CC’d basically. So really the only conditions Im worried about are Burning, Poison, and Bleeding. Everything else I leave on and just circle strafe, keeping up that 200 toughness keeps me alive longer. I also take “last stand” and that gives me 8 seconds of Stability so that I can keep the Circle Strafe going.
Ok Forget Frenzy too. I just tried this out without frenzy and added an extra shout. Still Works for killing mesmers and Helps my team out much more.

Dear Sir:
It goes more like this,
“Mesmer Casts Explode, and nothing happens, because all his Illusions are Dead.”
“Mesmer gets Flustered and looses his cool, as he watches his HP wash Away”
I kindly thank you for bringing that up, as it allows me to mention this:
- the way to kill a mesmer is to kill his illusions at the same time you are killing him
Oh how do you accomplish this?
- By wielding a hammer and letting the splash damage from the third auto-attack do all the work, while at the same time, staying focused on the mesmer.
I got a feeling OP is a Mesmer.

Nope. My main is a mesmer (and warrior an alt, hence why I’m here). First, most GOOD shatter mesmers pick up a trait in the illusion tree that allows them to have one more shatter … on themselves. This means I don’t need ANY clones out to cast shatter, though it will only be as effective as if one clone was out (and was exactly where I’m standing, which means if I’m not very close it won’t work). Still, that’s a solid 5k smack with my gear during that. And, and the same time, I can use Sword 2 to be immune to damage for 2 seconds while doing another 5k or so to you. After that immunity wears off, I can dodge or do my other shatter which makes me immune to damage for 1s for each clone I have out (plus 1 on me, up to a potential total of 4s). Since I run S/S + GS, I also have the single most bursty phantasm with OH sword (which if it hits you, can hit upwards of 4k with NO debuffs on you) and a block which counters for 5-7k if it crits. Lets also not forget most mesmers have a trait which creates a clone when they dodge, and gain vigor (100% endurance regen for 1s) when they crit (which with greatsword and a typical shatter build is OFTEN).
Basically: seeing a warrior in WvW or sPvP with the berserker debuff is basically my Halloween bag of candy. “This is a bunch of nonsense!” you might say. Well yes, mesmers are very strong burst characters in PvP and have a lot of immunity abilities which, when used correctly (and 90% of mesmers do NOT use them correctly) can let you live through some silly stuff. What mesmers suck at is running away… we have ONE swiftness ability in our entire class, and blink. That’s the extent of our mobility. Breaking all of our illusions and stunning/knocking us down for a solid 5+ seconds is great way to pressure a mesmer into running, at which point they are dead.
On the other hand, the OP is right about maces. They are notoriously effective at squashing illusions. If I see a tanky warrior with a hammer or OH mace, I will generally try to avoid them, not because I don’t think I can win but more because I don’t feel like it’s worth the effort and few minutes of my life. If I see a GS, Rifle, Bow, or Axe, it’s a pretty safe be they are squishy and I will proceed.

I think everyone hates fighting against mesmers, yet they complain about thieves and their stealth.

Honestly, I felt that way too on my ranger. Then I made a mesmer just to try to learn more about the class. Now, it’s my new main because it’s just so much fun (and unique from any other mmo class I’ve played). Honestly, take a mesmer to level 10 (or just do a few hours of sPvP with one). Try out all the weapons. You will IMMEDIATELY know where the real mesmer is at all times, and what their weaknesses are. It’s really not some insurmountable OP class that is impossible to beat (though I wouldn’t say they are completely EASY to counter, there are classes that are much harder, like thieves).
@ Rockaholic: no im not a mesmer though i plan on making an alt mesmer at some point, because i know they are really fun to play.
@Xyrm: So I haven’t had a problem with a Shatter Mesmer yet. Honestly though, Shatter mesmers tend to do the most damage to me before they die under my hammer. And oddly enough even with your detailed explanation of how mesmers can escape me, not ONE has been able to.
Actually, the toughest mesmers for me to defeat are Toughness Spec Mesmers, with illusions that last more than one or two hits.
This game is well balanced. For all the stuff I’ve mentioned, I’ve never had a problem against a warrior 1v1 where I lost and didn’t realize what I did wrong. Every time I lost, I forgot to use something that would have been clutch and saved me. More often than not, if I’m about to win the warrior runs away, because they have so many tools to do so, and I have virtually no tools to gap close (blink is an amazing stun break, so it’s usually used to survive, and I never really use a focus outside of sieging in WvW to yank people off buildings/cliffs).
I would however look forward to fighting a warrior skilled in an unpopular playstyle. I hope we may one day meet on the fields of sPvP or WvW! (if I don’t main change to warrior first!)

I’m glad for you. However this really doesn’t happen both ways. I feel that with any offensive spec my wins depend on the mesmer’s mistakes, and I don’t have the stuff it takes to force those mistakes. Essentially I cannot exhaust a mesmer’s defenses before losing the fight. It’s like fighting against stun lockers who potentially have a near 100% combo in other games – only their mistakes can enable your win.
So yeah, running away is often all I can do, if even that. I’m not playing glass cannon either, I just want to use traits outside deep Defense and Tactics. Stats aka passive defenses aren’t strong in GW2 but that’s what the warriors are designed to inherently have to buy a certain amount of time in fights.
Mesmers have counters for so many things and nothing counters what they do (moa, teleports, far too much stealth for non-thief profession, ample distortions, reflect, unlimited phantasm damage without line of sight). The illusion cooldown nerf did nothing when in the first place you are not a ground targeted nuke profession and thus cannot deal with both illusions and the mesmer if he is using blink and stealth to spread out the illusions. Also Toughness shouldn’t affect them at all.
Having tried Hammer in WvW, I don’t really feel like running around with one for other situations. Like others I doubt if original post was serious, though.

I’m afraid hammer just doesn’t have the mobility needed in WvW.
I keep falling back to greatsword. Greatsword is better for clearing mesmer clones/illusions anyway.
I have tried hammer as primary and greatsword secondary in WvW. The mobility worked out. For keep sieges you’d generally have opportunity to switch to ranged anyway.
However actually landing hammer abilities on opponents in WvW is a lot more challenging than in structured where people want to stay in cap circles and more people play short range builds in the first place. Also the fighting spots in structured maps are more cramped and people don’t want to get knocked off any edges so that further helps.
Hammer Warriors are generally more dangerous than the average Warr, but I’ve never had a problem to the extent of losing to one in a solo fight.
