Hey. Im close to L80 with my warrior and I have few questions concerning both WvW and dungeons. I would like to play with shield and sword and be a support / tanking character. I have been leveling using 2-hander and “sonic boon” build ( 20 points in arms, 30 points in tactics, 10 points in strength, 10 points in defence) and I have liked that… still it feels little bit squeeze or “glascannon” character to my taste.

1. Is it good weapon combination to use sword / shield and do you have some kind of suggestions as a trait combination? I have been thinking to put 30 points to tactics ( to get healing shouts ), 30 points to defense ( to get all shield skills ) and 10 point to arms to get some DPS. Is it ok?

2. I know example mace would be better combination with a shield if you like to tank, but I don’t like the looks of maces and I have thought that with sword I can do more damage than with a mace. Is that true? I know that in GW2 I can’t be pure tank, I have to also do damage so I think sword is ok choice. True? How about axe and shield? … still I think I swords look cooler…

3. I might continue to use that 2-hander and “sonic boon” build, do you think it works well in WvW and dungeons as a dps / support healer build?

Thanks!

That’s what I use, I run dungeons all day long with it. You can play with some of the traits to get better bleeds in, but chances are a full party will apply enough bleeds to max it out easily enough.

Here is my build for WvW.
Pretty standard healing shout warrior. Signet of rage and for great justice always being used gives me 100% fury uptime and between 8-11 stacks of might constantly. I use full knights gear and clerics trinkets with runes of the soldier.

The only time i die in WvW is when i get rolled over by the zerg. In smaller battles i can out sustain anyone with my heals and stealing life on crits (food + sigils).

Sorry Havidos and Schnuffles, but could you repost the links, they seem to be bad links. Thanks.

For the OP, the sonic boon build is mainly for dungeons and not WvW. It does provide some support but as i recall, Brand mentioned the main role of his build was to provide dps in a party rather than support.

I think sword and shield could work great but like you am unsure on trait combinations. Possibly 10/10/20/30 or 10/20/10/30 might work? However, if you prefer going full tank / support, the best weapon combination personally i prefer is the mace/shield – trait wise just make sure to have 30 in both tactics and defense.

Edit: Ah right, thanks Schnuffles.

I’ve updated my warriors build to this.

It has been much better than my previous post for a tank build.

The sword’s leap skill never ceases to impress me with its large distance and low cooldown. Helpful if you see someone with low HP and need to get to them quick.
Tactics tree is great. If you’re going sword mainhand and have a secondary weapon set with a cripple you should definitely try Leg Specialist.
If you want to use the sword because it looks cool- don’t compromise! Make it work for you!
