Hi everyone,
You may know my name as I have been posting quite a few things about choosing a profession recently and builds for different professions. I have finally decided to go with my gut and be the warrior. Because who doesn’t just love to jump in to battle and crack some skulls? I have decided I want to use sword/shield as my main weapon set because it is traditionally what warriors use, It looks so amazing and I love the abilities and versatility the weapon set brings.
This brings me to a dilemma, pretty much all the builds on youtube are “GS amazing crit damage” or something but I can’t find any for sword/shield warriors. I am not looking for a glass cannon build. I am looking for a nicely balanced build for PvE that can both support my allies and do some damage and be reasonably durable at the same time.
If anyone can help me make this build I would be very grateful. If you have any secondary weapon set suggestions, trait suggestions or skill suggestions I would appreciate the help. If you can get a whole build that would be amazing!

If you really want to use sword/shield you would have to go for a more condition oriented build, since much of the damage from 1h sword comes from the bleed effect. You won’t see awesome crits here, and the damage is rather low anyway. If you really want to 1h, consider axe mainhand, which is not as common, but a really strong contender(some even say it surpasses it when you can’t affor to channel 100b) to the gs warriors damage.

Condition Damage is not worth it. Go Power/Precision and let the Bleed be a nice side-effect instead.

True , Condition damage does not worth it. I’m speaking from w vs w perspective sword + shield. I used power, vitality and condition damage for my build but it doesn’t work in w vs w . Until I apply the bleeding I get killed , instead works nice with burning provided by longbow , in sieges defending/attacking it gets some damage done. I have managed to stack about 1400-1500 condition damage on my build , but I will have to use my favourite shield skin , krytan shield on other stats, on other build if I want to provide a warrior for my group.

I hadn’t tried one with toughness power precision for sword shield , I know that 3rd attack on sword skill 1 hits hard , but axe shield should do it in case of more damage request . I’m referring to critical chance/critical damage build .

Make it Charr or Norn, go Axe instead. Sword is pretty bad for warriors unless you want that fun fun charge or you really like how it looks and have fun wielding one.

I’m not particularly concerned about damage to be honest I was more looking for a mobile build with survivability and support capabilities. Of course I would like to have some damage but it’s not really my focus

What matters is you are having fun; so you will probably start with the knight set, and if you have enough money – you will mix match gears. SPVP may also serve as your template as to what armor/runes/sigil. try it out there.

Or you can have sword shield as your alternate weapon – because of combo quick running away through leap and defense provided by shield. This works well with any and all weapon combinations of Warriors from axe axe to to sword warhorn

basically I’m a WVW player – spent 80 percent of my time in wvw, unless I’m afk in Lion’s arch or watching toons.

I have all weapons of warrior. But, I always have a riffle in my bag – for hitting sieges on the walls etc. and good for tagging pve bosses in dynamic events. I don’t have a long bow though – my next target.

Anyway, I use sword and warhorn as an alternate weapon. WHy? BEcause it allow me to leap away fast away or towards a target. Or… greatsword. – for purposes of running away and manuevers.

You can experiment on what you want.

Hmmm….Cool I’m mainly gonna do PvE and WvW and I might do a very small amount of sPvP…. Would Sword/shield and Sword/warhorn be okay or is it pointless havbing the sword twice? Because I was thinking of just swapping to get the vigour and movement buffs and then swapping back or something like that

It is not pointless, which also saves on your resources. If this is your playstyle, it is okay.

Try it in SPVP so you get the feel. Or WVW. Most of my experience is wvw based; so that is where my bias lay. The reason why i suggest SPVP is so you can arrange the runes/ item type – etc. because it is free there, and you don’t need to spend anything.

Thanks for all the help! I guess you could say my playstyle is kinda being a mobile tank so I can take a few hits but can move freely and support my team! Thanks again for all the help you gave!

No prob. The video, squad commander, is probably the way to go then if that is your playstyle. ;3

Yeah it does look pretty cool especially since I will be levelling with friends and they’re all going full damage so I will bring something different to the table

Sword isn’t so bad inside a proper build, I would go like this.
5000 effective power
40% damage reduction
85% crit chance (with fury) 250% crit dmg
Bleeds from autoattacks, sigil of earth and 33% trait

(add truffle steak + superior sharp stone in builder to see full stats)

I think Sword/Shield would be pretty boring to play tho.
Basically all you do is autoattacking…
