Q:
Hi folks,
I believe we should have more access to fear. Our battle fury, our weapon mastery, our sheer strength should be able to strike fear in the heart of our opponents.
While I’d like Anet to add a fear component to the berserker trait line or new F2, if this is not the case, here is an idea.
In all times of war, the battle roar was used to give courage to allies and strike fear to enemies. Shouts are our battle roars. Instead of relying on Fear me (and its too long ICD), why don’t we replace Fear with another useful boon on the shout (like quickness) and add a trait in the Tactics line that would trigger Fear at shout use? Add a reasonable ICD to make this a balanced trait, and voilà!
I am a casual player and don’t know if this would be interesting enough for competitive play, but it looks to me that it could help build diversity.
Let me know if this is worth a shot or how we could improve the idea.
Thanks.

Fear is good for that oh-crap moment but we need a consistent way of locking down kiters, not make them run farther away from us and we should be able to do so at a distance.
Truthfully what is more warrior like letting loose with a warcry and causing your opponent to run from you or causing them by stunned with fear and indecision indecision standing in a puddle of their own making while you whale away at them.
I can’t count the times I’m engaging someone and thinking stupid shield’s on cd again.
We have the longest skill activation times in the game, and we need tools that will allow us the opportunity work around these disadvantages.
As a warrior I should be able to slam my shield into someones head at least 3 times a min. (very conservative number) I also expect as a Berserker to be able to benefit from the damage I take since I’m expected to be be a frontline aggressor.
“Warriors are masters of martial skills. They’re versatile in combat and benefit from offensive and defensive abilities. Warriors inspire allies and demoralize enemies.”.
“Warriors are masters of weaponry who rely on speed, strength, toughness, and heavy armor to survive in battle. Adrenaline fuels their offensive power—the longer warriors stay in a fight, the more dangerous they become.”.
This is who we should be but every time we get good at something here comes the complaints. My goodness… we received a nerf because folks said we were too good in PVE, in a game where there is no such thing as mob stealing!
Fear is for necros, archery is for rangers, magic and and spells are mesmers and eles., retal., protection is for guardians, gadgets are the domain of eng., stealth thieves warriors should be in your face it’s slamming bots. But without the tools (a consistent stunning abilities) we stay where we are now… buff bots.
My bad for rambling but our detractors are much more solicitous then I and do so in a more eloquent manner.
I get what you’re saying thematically, but I don’t actually want much fear as a warrior outside of an “Oh kitten!” button, tbh. If I was running shouts (I usually don’t), the last thing I’d want is to send enemies away from my weapons every time I used a utility.
I’m actually much more interested in Taunt, tbh, and I predict the Berserker line will give us access to that (possibly a little Fear too).
I’ve had Rangers trap me in 2s of Taunt while they Rapid Fired me…. I’d like to turn the tables so my greatsword can go… “OM NOM NOM NOM! FEED ME MOAR!”
Hi Choppy,
Indeed, taunt is quite powerful and I would love to have it on my warrior. “Come to me, I am your friend!”
But I do believe a well used shout fear could prove quite useful to land an Eviscerate, an Earthshaker or even a KS all the while removing a blind with Shake it Off for instance. Afterall, a 1 second fear doesn’t allow a foe to go that far away…
Bigger issue might be the usefulness of stances and how hard it is to get away from having at least two of them on our bar.
A shout idea I had would be a skill called “Get back here!” Think of it as kind of like an anti- fear that would force kiters to run towards us instead, so we can do what we were meant to do and smack the kitten of them.
I feel like this would greatly even the odds against classes that kite us like rangers mesmers engis, etc..
Any thoughts?

It still wouldn’t fit my play style, but who knows?

Never played as ranger before TIL lol
I would prefer a more powerful stun, a stun with some range to hit kiters and more duration to give me a chance to actually reach the stunned individual to do my thing.
To The Limit should also grant the caster endurance and 8 sec. of health gain for every hit we take. Shield Bash should have a 15 sec. cd and Shield stance should have a 20 sec. cd along with resistance and reveal on hit.
Change Fear Me and make into a hybrid stun immobilize attack with 3 sec. stun followed by a 5 sec. immobilize along. To live up to the Berzerker title if that’s what we’re getting.

@Widebody: I understand kiting is tough for full melee warriors, especially with Bull’s Charge not being very efficient.
But my goal here was to focus on fear, and at a larger extent, on shouts and the fact that Anet has to give them more bang if they want warriors to use them. IMHO, shouts without the Healing trait didn’t bring enough to the table prepatch (except maybe Shake it Off). After the Healing nerf, who will use them when Stances are so good and versatile?
So my reasoning is the following: even if we go back to the former Healing state with shouts, the current meta is too DPS oriented to make them at par, hence my idea to add a fear trait.
I like fear because, as Choppy pointed out, its fits the warrior theme. And it is an excellent tool. I am sure a shout support warrior that could heal properly and fear opponents at the same rate as a ranger can apply taunt (average 20-25 seconds I suppose depending of F2 ICD) could be a balanced solution. I’d love to hear Online on the subject as he/she tried really hard to make shouts still viable in PvP.
And if fear is not a good solution, please discuss what could be done to make them worth adding to our bar.
Hi Widebody,
I do get your point. Warriors’ biggest issues won’t be solved by fear. And I am not trying to solve them with fear either.
I opened a thread as I thought Fear was warrior like and would complement well shouts. Forcing a foe to disengage is an interesting tool, IMHO.
I thank you for taking the time to respond (I chose your last post as answer so it’s been relocated under my first post). The comments of those who replied + the small number of replies is proof enough that the community has more pressing challenges to tackle!
Cheers.

Ive heard many people say they want taunt and i agree. It would be more useful than fear for most cases.
