Having major trouble with thiefs atm, I have 25022 health, 2082 toughness, and 3256 armor and a thief killed me in wvw today 1v1 in five seconds!
No I do not have a screenshot of it but I should have taken one. Anyone else having trouble with thiefs?

Should thiefs be able to do this kind of damage?

yeah, warriors are having a lot of trouble with thieves.
their invisibility is their strength, we lose our target, so we cannot hit them. but it’s ok. it’s their strategy. but their damage is op for sure.
thieves are supposed to apply strong condition damages, not strong straight damage.
idk what’s wrong. is it warrior or thief?
(ranger’s roots [entangle] also drives me crazy when i get caught, it’s hp bar is just too high, it’s like a 5 seconds stun)

You can still hit them when invisible. Don’t stop swinging your weapon. Spam your auto attack button.

my problem is when i’m full exotic with as much toughness armor and hp i can get and a thief heartseekers me 3 times for 5.5k then uses their ulti and spins, you can’t reflect the spin and you cant attack them while they spin…

the worst is when they pop thiefs guild that each hit for 1k x3 then resume to heartseeker you for 5k / hit… i’m about to reroll simply…

Unfortunately, I’ve run into Thieves in WvW that are NOT specced glass cannon, and their damage is still ridiculous. Cluster Bombs for 5k, vanishing and porting around. I really think they need to tone down the damage, and maybe up the HP, or something. It’s bad for a Warrior with 3200+ armor, it’s even worse for Elementalists and others with lower armor and health.

ye i dont really like this is very unbalanced and warr ar too weak armor is useless in this game idk why but is very useledd i have 100k armor bhaa i hit you for 8k… idk why however thievs have too OP damage i loose vs him with all class coz in 2 attack i’m downed… -.- and this is called balaced class??… pls…. if i build a warrior glass cannon i die in 2 sec and cant kill a mesmer in 3 hit lol some thief hit me fot 8k… consequently 8k and more… this class need a very nerf to become balanced with all classes and warr need an OP on armor coz i repeat is the useless thing i ever seen.. in this game at last give to us the armor formula

Looks like Thieves are going to be OP in this game too. Seems like a consistent theme in all MMO’s really. There was actually a thread earlier in the suggestions forums where a guy said thieves should have perma stealth lol. If you watch the vid the guy just hits is #1 skill over and over and over until he gets the kill. Super skillz!!!

Don’t try and out last a thief, outdps them. As mentioned earlier, invisibility is not invincibility, I’ve downed thieves plenty of times while they were hidden, don’t stop attacking them just because you can’t see them. The only thieves I really have trouble with are the ones that use deathblossom and spec feline grace and dodge everything.

A few tips for fighting Thieves:

1. If Thief is low HP upon Vanish > Keep swinging in last known direction & heading.

2. If Thief is moderate HP upon vanish > Keep swinging and chasing in what you think is their best escape route.

3. Use Either Shield Stance or Defy Pain in your build. Useful against all Builds.

Yes, Thief are the God class, you should just play one and win, when you go into pvp warriors will bend down for ya as you walk all over them.

Obviously, since they are so good you should have no problem playing it.

I do think thieves and mesmers are meant to beat other professions one on one, they are both duelist professions that take a lot of skill. This game I don’t think is or even should be balanced one on one, it is not meant to be a solo game, but a team game.

If you want to be able to kill people in duels, go mesmer or thief, if you want to do major aoe damage in big zergs, which is where the soldiers lore-wise should be, play a warrior or guardian.

You can’t make each profession the same, some are just better at certain purposes than others. All professions can play all purposes, but some are just better at certain purposes.

If you fight a thief, you’ll just have to be more skilled than they, to balance out their higher power in duels.. if you are equally skilled, you will lose 8 out of 10.. if you are lower skilled, you will never win.

I’m curious as to what you players do that gives you so much trouble against thieves. Generally speaking as long as you’re alert and dodge the burst you can take them down no problem. That goes for glass cannon builds in general. If you’re fighting someone else and a thief kills you, then that’s a 2v1, so you probably would have died anyway. In a 1v1 you should have a even match or even a clear advantage/disadvantage, depending on your build if you know their coming and recognize their abilities.

If you’re expecting to simply be able to soak damage, no, game doesn’t work that way. Avoid damage when possible and bury your foe in an hp deficit.

If you’re having trouble recognizing abilities or even having a hard time dealing with a profession, just go make a character of that profession, work out a solid build, then play it a bunch. You’ll learn that profession’s ins and outs, what skills look like, what they can and cannot do, and what they have trouble doing.

Most of the common thief builds and counters:
Venom sharing: make sure you have condition removal, or something to bunker down with to avoid getting smacked around during the immobilize.

Bleed build: Generally involves leaping death blossom spam and caltrops. You can dodge leaping death blossom, simply don’t stand in the caltrops. Removal to purge bleed stacks.

Pistolwhip: hasted pistol whips are hard to deal with, but still possible to avoid. Bring a stun breaker and/or stability, mash dodge if you get stunned and can’t break out. This is really a build that should only give you trouble if you had no idea the thief was there. Pistol whip can be walked out of without haste, its very obvious animation makes it easy to spot. Most sword thieves go right for the pistol whip, some however may make use of the infiltrators strike/ return to harass.

Heartseeker: distinctive animation and sound makes this ability easy to spot, and thus, avoid.

Steal: a lot of thieves will open with this. Steal against warriors grants whirling axe, evading melee strikes but not reflecting projectiles. Just run away from this so they whiff whirling axe. Ranged snares or attacks can be used against them just fine however.

Clusterbomb: slow when used from a distance. The only time a shortbow thief will want to be in your face will be to shotgun you with this. Dodge/block if they suddenly decide to warp in with infiltrator’s arrow.

Stealth/backstabs: A thief is invisible, not invulnerable, swing auto attacks while turning sharply behind yourself and to the sides to find the thief and return damage. Dodging randomly, or using aoe also can be effective. You’ll be surprised how many people you can catch just by turning, often making a sharp 180 for the obvious backstab means you eat it to the face, and take only a fraction the damage you would have otherwise.

The “assassin” or “ninja” role is fun in SPRPGs, but totally out of place in an MMO.

I disagree. Permanent stealth may be a bit of a thing in certain PvP situations, but I feel like Thief stealth in GW2 is classily implemented. You can still hit a thief, or anyone, who is in stealth. It serves as a disengage/distraction that you can counter-play. It isn’t like you’re standing there minding your own business and suddenly you’re pistol whipped.

It is amazing how little each of you know about the other class before crying in the forums.

First off his build SUCKS.. Yeah looks impressive in 5 second bursts where he blows ALL of his cool downs and kills a person or two and then goes on a 60 second timer before he is useful again. He has to play like that because he has zero toughness, zero defense. The thief in that video is a glass cannon and is honestly IMHO a crappy way to play one.

With that said, the original poster needs to learn how to play warrior. A warrior can do things just as crazy if you build them right, but again I would also consider that a crappy way to play a warrior because WvWvW and even sPvP is not a 1 on 1 fight.

I have ran into a few warriors that know what they are doing on my thief and they mowed me. They are actually the only class that if played well can mow mykittendown without to much problem. A warrior with little skill is easy to pick off though.

Also a warrior who knows how to use his shield and has high toughness and vitality iskittennear unkillable.

You can easy counter him in many ways, with a shield you use block stance, problem solved all he will do is hear a bunch of bunks and many blocks right there, then he is death. You can also use that stance that makes you immune to damage, he be rolling all over you for 0 damage, then he dies. Can always dodge backwards with good timing he won’t deal much damage then he dies. So on it goes.

@People complaining about stealth and team work: For one if every class can’t stand against every other class 1v1 then the game is lacking some serious balance. Or are you suggesting we go to the cave man age of mmos with “EVERYONE TARGET THE HEALER” and a single healer taking damage from over 7 people because he cannot be killed 1 on 1? Or the classic ranged > melee no matter wut? Want to kill a ranged char, gang him and hope for the best. Nop, GW2’s team is quite good at making the game and balancing it.

Sadly people simply can’t let go of the old days of 1 build to rule em all and one macro set to bind them into the boringness.

I actually have alot more trouble with the theifs that don’t go full glass cannon. The glass cannon ones, if they make a mistake, or you outplay them in a short window, are SO SCREWED, its not even funny. The ones that build regularly with some survival however, don’t have to go all-in on you, and they have so many kiting tricks up their sleeve, its really hard to deal with them.

Call me when this game gets fixed…. if it ever does….
