Trouble with Mesmers....
I have trouble with them too. Just keep fighting them and you will get use to finding the real one easier. I just look at their movement and can usually find them in a sec or two, but still a good one is death for me
The thing that drives me nuts is teleporting and stealthing…
If you can, get a target on the mesmer before they start pumping out clones – ctrl+t is the default, I believe. Also, clones don’t evade or run when you beat on them, so don’t waste your time if the target just stands there But agreed, they’re a pain to fight.

a well played mesmer simply can’t die 1v1 against most class’/specs. i can only name a few specs spanning all classes that can kill me 1v1 (and admittedly i stand no chance against them).
If you’re playing close range I recommend using an axe off hand for the number 5 whirl skill, use it close to one and you’ll pop all his clones hit him even if he goes invis and come out will full adrenaline to burst him with.

I usually win 1 vs 1 against less skilled people as they have no idea how to fight me, it becomes painfully obvious they’re just scrambling to hit things with no real plan. Fighting a good mesmer is more of a mind game than a dps battle. With that said, I have had warriors destroy me due to the sheer amount of burst they can do, they’ll figure out who i am, do the charge knockdown thing and spin on top of me. That usually leaves me at 30-40% hp.
As far as fighting a mesmer, there are about 2-3 main specs. The worst to be up against is a condition phantasm build. It’s easy to catch the real mesmer, problem is killing him before you die from bleeds/confusion. When all 3 phantasms are up and you have a 20 stack of bleeds and a 5 stack of confusion with my 1500 condition damage, you’re usually dead UNLESS you cleanse the bleeds/confusion, have a stun break and catch me off guard. Phantasms are dangerous, clones are not. You can tell them apart easily as phantasms look like ghosts (ie: transparent) while clones do not. Phantasms also have unique names ie: illusionary duelist.
If i’m up against a good player, i will have 2 phantasms up and clone, and i usually switch places with the clone or go invisible/stun while my phatasms throw their conditions up, I essentially control the fight while my illusions deal damage. I do next to nothing in damage so it’s best to kill my phantasms before going after me.
Most mesmers will usually run with pistol and greatsword. The pistol clone stacks bleeds very fast while the greatsword one cripples. It’s best to dodge the pistol phantasm.

Every good mesmer PvP build runs staff. The problem is that we weapon swap far more than any other prof so you can get caught in the wrong weapon if the warrior knows what he’s doing.
The only advice I can give is use the call target when you spot which one is the real mesmer, it really helps with the confusion of his clones. When he uses decoy (spawns a clone and makes you invisible as well as breaking stun) the target will disapear, you then need to find the real one again when he reappears. Fortunately it has a ~35 second cd so can’t really be spammed.
Realistically though mesmers are the current god’s of 1v1, only a few builds of guardians give us issues. We aren’t as effective in large groups so if you run with 2/3 friends it will really hurt the mesmer’s ability to do stuff.
