Hey, i just got back from a 3 month break from gw2, and my warrior is lvl 55.

Do we still suck in WvW? I know in SPvP i do great, and PvE i was always the last to die, and i did the most noticeable damage on mobs.

i was thinking about deleting all my characters and transfering to my friends server and making a fresh character with him(thief), but if my warrior is better then a thief in wvw/pve im probably going to just get him to 80 and buy gems for gold and transfer.

Not sure when warriors ever sucked in WvW, they aren’t good in s/tPvP that’s pretty much it.

Depends on the aspect of WvW, thieves are the best of the best in solo roaming and small scale skirmishes. Warriors can hold their own as roamers, can take supply camps himself or with another person fairly fast and efficiently and probably bring more to the table support wise in terms of large-scale battle as front to second-line waves.

The Thief has more utility and can be more useful for WvW. They are also better at 1v1 with the right build. A good dagger/pistol thief will destroy any Warrior.

If you mainly do PvE the Warrior would suit better. They are usually wanted more in dungeons for Dps. Not to say that a Thief isn’t useful in a dungeons; just that the majority of the population in the game doesn’t understand what a Thief can bring to a dungeon group. I would personally prefer to run a Thief, with 80% of the damage and with 500% times the ability to survive, over a Warrior.

If you like the idea of a Warrior, I would suggest a Guardian. They are needed in everything and can do 60-75% of the damage of a Warrior while still being 800% better at surviving.

Sadly, I chose a Warrior as my main at launch (should have went Guardian)… but there is hope they will get buffed. (Just not any time soon).

Warriors are ok ikittenerg, but then again so is everything.
They can be an ok ganker (if the victim is new/bad).

However if you’re looking for that heavy armor in your face brawler you’d be better served overall with a guardian.

Warrior is pretty solid in WvW. Decent roamer, good in small group warfire and absolutely necessary as frontline fighters in organized melee trains – guardians too slow for this and act more as support fighters, thieves absolutely suck in first lines.

You got some builds that will free you from the thief terrors. (so you can basicly ignore em) But yea, played my warrior for 600 hours now in WvW and I can say they are absolute beasts. They can withstand tons of damage and still deal decent back. Can solo cap camps quite easily and still are pretty fast roamers.

Warrior can be played different ways, but I like mine the most with soldier runes on my armor and 30 points into tactics. But I know many will dissagree :p.

Warrior actually gets the best of both without their flaws, from a WvW perspective.

It cannot facetank as much as a Guardian but it’s quite resilient and if things get bad he can escape which is fundamental in WvW, while Guardian is not able to escape death.
When playing alone or with small teams Warrior can do his best then rush away at low health, Guardian at low health dies.

As for Thieves.
It does not have the mobility of a Thief but most times he will get away alive (if a good Warrior), while Thieves are 2-shot material.
Burst is great on both, and on both its predictability only depends on the skill level of the player: if good it is nowhere near easy to avoid or to predict, good Warriors/Thieves will waste your CDs before they burst you when you the least expect it and still deal big dmg while not bursting.

I have all 3 classes and I got a few thousands more kills on my Warrior than on my Guard/Thief because it simply has the best tools of both without having a major weakness that guarantees your death in some circumstances.

In PvE though I feel Guard > Thief > Warrior.
People die for Guards in teams, you can facetank almost anything forever (something I really miss with Warrior) and it’s very hard to down let alone die.
Thieves are very good to have in any team due to stealth, will rarely die if played evasively and damage is pretty solid.
Warriors hav big dmg but lack sustain; on my Guard and Thief I can solo Lupi forever but Warrior simply lacks the sustain to do so.
I believe Warriors should get a form of Guardian’s Altruistic Healing so they have the sustain required to play endgame PvE without being forced to roll away from DPSing after some damage.

As for sPvP we’ll see next patch with the big chances incoming for Thief (Mug nerf) and how Boon Hate will work.
If Warrior could get through the boon barrier of the 2 most OP classes I can see it earning a slot especially since Thief’s burst will go down a notch.

I run hammer shout build (10/0/20/30/10) , I use valkyrie armor with soldier runes, knight accessories and cleric hammer. It’s nice to run around with 3k armor and 26.5k hp and still be able to hit for 2 to 3k crits 50% of the time

I think warriors are not so good solo roamers as thieves or DD elementalists, yes warrior has the best mobility in the game but that is on the long run. Thief and ele can jump a great distance in just a matter of seconds which lets them to catch and escape.

For guild/party roam, warriors are one of the best professions to have. Sword and warhorn offers mobility for your self and your allies and the amount of damage you deal while building tanky is just insane.

Hammer warriors who know how to CC and have a good group are amazing in WvW. Warriors shine as team players. Tanky warriors have some uses, for example manning rams, but guards are decent at this as well. PVE warriors are probably the best class for dungeons.

Thieves if you want to roam in WvW and just kill random people. If you want to contribute to the realm, they are less effective at taking supply camps but great at killing doylaks.

I go full berserker in WvW. Axe/Shield. Works perfectly well. My survivability lies in 3 second block and 5 second endure pain and the movement that comes with Sword/Warhorn and bull’s charge. I have no trouble at all with thieves.

Well it’s bugged apparently. It says it’s 5 seconds but its really not, only lasts like 3 seconds. I tend to use it as I use frenzy to smash out the 50% more damage while on frenzy. And yeah, totally agree on the d/d eles.

Against d/d ele’s, just get stabilty and autoattack. As soon as you see that they don’t have stability, chain cc them. Usually does the trick for me.

Yeah I switch between the stability stance and endure pain. Endure pain is not invulnrability for the record, just take zero damage from attacks. Can still be stunned etc. I havn’t yet worked out which one that serves me best.

I usually don’t have a trouble with anything coming at me but if I have trouble, it’s a good d/d ele or a good mesmer.

I never seen warriors sucking in any department except maybe having as many possible builds as many other classes do, this referring to how many of the possible utility/traits combinations seems to be decent but not good enough.

I do great with my warrior in all aspects of the game, but since you are asking about WvW, well warriors absolutely kitten 1 v 1 unless is a an elementalist then you are really kitten, 1 v X is doable depending on the quality of the enemies, as for massive zergs go if you coordinate with your team you will be doing massive amount of damage while being quite mobile and having some sweet escape mechanisms, you can bring a certain level of control and support or a truck load of damage, also defending with long bow can dish a lot of AoE burst to assist your team with defense.

Yet as someone who constantly fight other warriors in WvW I must tell you this, 8 out of 10 warriors are horrible and should re roll asap, 1 our of those 10 is decent but needs some extra muscle memory training and the last one is the one warrior that will make you scream “OMFG WARRIORS ARE SO OP T_T!!!!”

Whichever group you end up in depends solely on you. But this applies to every class out there.

I would’t say all bad Warriors go with 30 vit, there are still good support/dps Warriors with 30 vit for reduced shout cd and shout heals out there. I used to think 30 vit is the way to go, now I only keep 20 (for Warhorn cond heal, cant live w/o it) I guess its up to your Playstyle. To OP, you alone decide the viability of Warriors (or any class for that matter, I cant play D/D ele in wvw even if my life depended on it) in wvw. Personally for me, they are great with a dedicated Guild but for roaming? Other classes do it better Now go out there and collect some badges

Yea I have come to this point with endure pain. If it was actually 5 seconds maybe I would run it but that cd is so long. I run balance stance 40 secs isnt long for 8 seconds of stability! I have bull charge and the other utility I switch out.

As I get more comfortable with how a warrior plays vs other classes frenzy will be dropped. I don’t really run it much now actually so I am at a crossroads of signet of stamina or shake it off. The 1 trump of shake it of is that it breaks stun and has less of a cd than signet of stamina. Remove 3 conditions and +33% to endurance regen is also very nice. Really though there aren’t many stuns out there that I worry about except baslisk venom and another bull charge.

I played a War in WvW since pretty much launch until around 2 weeks ago. Mostly outnumbered fights.

Never been a fan of the shout builds, try them frequently but don’t feel I get any extra survival (nor does my group) but lose massive spike damage. Not such a fan of greatsword either, mostly run hammer.

Up until recently I really enjoyed running a knights hammer build in WvW, and whilst survival wasn’t amazing I could still get stuck in (the massive downtime if you have to drop back to heal sucks, esp as tend to have no ranged weapon equipped due to needing mobility to back off to begin with). However, recently we lost our main ele and our guardian swapped to mesmer.. and now I feel like I can’t last more than 10 seconds.

Berserker with GS/Rifle is very strong in WvW, which bugs me because it feels like the game is literally trying to push me towards glass cannon and greatsword all the time, it’s almost always the more beneficial option (fighting 2 players? down one then when the other tries to res you kill them both together, whereas non-glass you cant dps fast enough to stop them getting up).

I’ve been playing an ele a bit lately and the difference is ridiculous, downtime is virtually none as you have at most to wait 9s to swap back into water + dodge and heal up, less burst but the sustain dmg is just as good especially with the conditions on top. Survival… well, no matter how much damage I drop on my warrior I can never be that survivable. Try going back to my warrior for an hour or so each day but between the slow swing speed of the hammer missing due to people sidestepping, the earthshaker not hitting things within the circle and the lack of sustained survival it just feels horrible Especially now our group composition has changed.

I don’t think Warriors suck in WvW, and I’ve had many a fun time playing with it, they just need a group support that compliments them – plenty of other melee to avoid you getting focused, good healing and cleansing support. Aka: Bring a guard/ele.

@Neandramathal it all depends on what you are doing. If its solo roaming in WvW then a thief, ele I would put tied for number 1 and the warrior a close 2nd. Anything else like zerging then warrior is fine for that. If its a small group composition Warrior does well with most other classes mixed in.

Mostly played in 5-10 man groups with warrior vs larger numbers, but as the players in the game evolve (learning to focus fire) and new builds emerge things change a bit. Mostly I think it is dependant on group composition, the loss of the guardian/ele is very noticeable. No more passive healing from the ele, or wall of reflection/pure of voice/regen+prot from the guardian. You definitely notice when you’re the only melee >.<

I actually think mesmer is one of the best solo roamers atm, they have some good burst with blurred frenzy+shatter, and access to both stealth and invulnerability. a Thief’s main advantage in roaming is the ability to pick and choose it’s targets.

Just using a longbow build and I can say that badges are flowing . Over 10000 burning damage with rare vegie pizza , no ram will ever be built while I’m in tower. Also skill 5 now after update brought some hundred kills , only by increasing bleeding by 50% in precision line tree.

As a melee I find warrior incredible for w vs w , just adjust your skills and keyboard so you react as fastest as you can and use mobile strike.

A good warrior will destroy a good thief anyday of the week D/P included (considering I play it and know the flaws). thieves PVE dungeon survivability is much weaker than warriors due the stealth not providing any sort of defensive buff and inherently pulling you out of a fight. A warrior with a GS will out dps a thief comparatively geared. If they are both glass the warrior wins out also. The base hp is much higher and if he’s smart enough to carry a shield off or endure pain he will do more dps and survive longer while doing it. This isn’t a warrior fanboy thing I just play 3 toons heavily at 80 and warrior and thief happen to be 2 of them. The warrior in PvE is the better carry hands down.

Guardian while strong is not warrior. They are too different and in practiced hands both have strong survivability (invul states, knock back knock downs etc). The real gap is dps and warrior wins this hands down if comparatively geared.

As far the OP

Warrior is an ok roamer and insane good in large and small skirmish. It doesn’t suck in WvW in anyway just expect a thief or a DD ele to have an easier time with escapes.

A fully geared out and buffed warrior ganking players obviously below lvl 80 (or just not geared very well, based on what they’re wearing), and in a lot of cases still losing 50% of his health.

Any large scale fight and that warrior would INSTANTLY drop and even in smaller ones if the enemy wasn’t terribad and focused him he’d still drop without doing too much damage, again unless his opponents were horrible and all clumped together for his attacks.

The Thief has more utility and can be more useful for WvW. They are also better at 1v1 with the right build. A good dagger/pistol thief will destroy any Warrior.

If you mainly do PvE the Warrior would suit better. They are usually wanted more in dungeons for Dps. Not to say that a Thief isn’t useful in a dungeons; just that the majority of the population in the game doesn’t understand what a Thief can bring to a dungeon group. I would personally prefer to run a Thief, with 80% of the damage and with 500% times the ability to survive, over a Warrior.

If you like the idea of a Warrior, I would suggest a Guardian. They are needed in everything and can do 60-75% of the damage of a Warrior while still being 800% better at surviving.

Sadly, I chose a Warrior as my main at launch (should have went Guardian)… but there is hope they will get buffed. (Just not any time soon).

HAHA That video is terrible the people he is fighting are under leveled trash that barely even attack him and he barely comes out on top. Props to Sanny putting out videos and all but those vids are painful to watch if your not wetawded.

I know it has been said but you are proving my point by posting a Warrior video of him almost going under to a under level “not so good” thief. In a fair 1v1 fight Warrior (any build) vs Dagger/Pistol Thief, the Thief will win if he is not 1) Under leveled, 2) Bad at his class, 3) Makes more than 10 mistakes. In the case of (1) he still might win if he is skilled. Only (2) and (3) really make a thief lose to a Warrior. At worst, if the Thief realizes the Warrior is a tank and he can’t “one shot” him, he will just stealth and run away.

What does it take for a skilled Warrior to lose a fight? 1) One Mistake at any level with any gear against any class.

I will try it wit 2 runes of forge , balthazar and baelfire for 45 % increased burning. Also i will invest in 6 guardian runes for burning on block. I think it would have effect when fighting a zerg .

The build is made especialy for burning but bleeding can put a target at ground in some seconds. I use sword mainly for mobility and shield to survive and escape any zerg .

The build works great in sieges forcing enemy to use catapults which are slower than rams. Also when pushing a zerg it gets a great number of badges . All is based on the burst burning skill that at level 3 adrenaline will burn for 8 seconds with 5 pulses of burning , every pulse stacking 2seconds + codition duration of burning.

I might change also to toughnes , precision, condition damage armor in the end , just testing now. Trinkets that I use now aren’t exotic as difference in condition damage is small – see build .

We warriors rule in PvE and are fairly ballanced in WvW when compared to with the non OP (broken) professions (D/D ele). I find I am weak versus guardians, makes sense, who in their right mind would go melee vs a guardian without the ability to stealth/surprise attack.

I just got my warr to 80 a week ago and outfitted with exotics but no cash for Lyssa runes yet and still figuring out runes, sigils and food in general. I’ve played 5 other classes and still play 3 others right now – this is the fourth and last one for pvp. I’ve actually played warr since release but got distracted with other things.

Anyway I pvp’ed the past week with lots of wvw: solo, small group and follow the random commander zerging.

The two builds I like the best are the extremes that people mention above. 20/20/0/0/20 GS/rifle zerker and 0/0/30/30/10 shout heal, GS and other weapon yet to be determined but prob mace mainhand.

Funny thing is I got about 3 times as many badges as I did the previous week on my necro. I like both builds, I just wish there was something more in between. Anyway they are perfectly fine for WvW and it’s actually nice with the shout heal build to be able to fight in the front lines.

This (Necro/blow your wells/condition utilities and spread it), D/D or AoE-focused Staff Eles, trap Rangers, and any stealth Thief will easily outpace Warrior in badges. I tend to do better with Warrior than Guardian, Mesmer, Engineer, in badge generation but those classes definitely curb zerg and small group effectiveness far more.

Of course, the real answer is it depends on your playstyle and what is your measurement of success (i.e. badge-generation, solo-camp killing, kill the dolyak and escape, zerg support, kill-to-death ratio, etc.)
