Why would you ever use a shield in PvE >.> maybe if you’re pugging arah or grawl fractal at 30+ it could be handy, but otherwise mace brings a better source of CC, and using CC as a sudo block is probably just better overall.
sword/wh is probably better for zergs, but shield has its applications
pvp just depends on the person, the warrior has a lot of gimicky builds that are pretty trolly.
^ Shield has its own interrupt which doubles as a gap closer/leap finisher (granted a poor ranged one at that.) I’d rather have shield block on the ready against a boss fight rather than throwing CC at defiance stacks. Until I’m an expect on every single dungeon (still fairly new to HotW and Arah) it’s always nice to have an ‘oh kitten’ button to fall back on. Plus, I love my Seraph Shield
Because I love archery, I main a Longbow. 10/30/30
I skip longbow traits since they are bad. And tactics tree is bad. My gear is strange mix of soldier, knights, beserker and Rabid. I have 2.1k power, 50% crit, 500 cond dmg, 33% crit dmg and 2.8k armor.
It is very fun but very challenging in wvw. It takes a lot of experience to guess how a zerg will move in order to accurately drop your combust/arc shot on them. The attacks are so slow in flight that if you are not careful they will be blocked/reflected. If you are very experienced though LB damage is amazing. Combust shot alone will do up to 15k dmg to a target who stands in it the whole time x 5 for a group. Arc shot crits 4-6k and hits up to 5. Exploding shot crits for a 1k and is also aoe, fan of fire can crit up to 3k at point blank. Pin down does a ton of bleeding dmg, depending on cond it could do 10-15k over 20 seconds.
Taken all together you can surprise a person at range and down them in less then 5 seconds with a bit of luck.
I am switching weapons constantly as the battle changes in wvw.
Been running 10 30 0 0 30, usually use:
- knights + gs and something for melee or
- Full zerker and choose between rifle bow + side kick weapon depending on situation
I like:
GS + axe/warhorn: open field roaming mobility and burst damage up close
rifle + whatever makes sense: had some nice one shots today, a 21k and a 17.5k crit on light armour foe (total glass build 4k atk 110% crit, zero suitability but oh man sniper time! )
GS + bow: aoe beast mode arc shot 8k aoe crit on up to 5, F1 is insane (Furious and burst master recharge adren super fast with F1 aoe critting). I run burst build so bow is zerker and is for big aoe hits + F1 area control. I hated bow till i had gear for it to get nice 7-8k aoe crits
Hammer + gs: Gs to get up in fast, then unload with hammer F1. Fun stuff, dont need to spec for hammer to hit like a truck.
axe/mace + either hammer/gs/bow: offhand mace surprises people, and 12k eviscerate finishes the deal nicely
PvE I prefer sword/shield & longbow or rifle. GS is fun, but I don’t see how most warriors it seems only use GS. I’d prolly use it more if I weren’t aiming for slayer achievements.
PvP I like sword/shield, mace/shield, mace/mace, rifle, bow. Don’t use axe, hammer, or GS much, but I’m having fun with my current sword/shield w/ bow setup atm. I have put a build together for future use with a GS where I won’t be immobilized, and I can get hundred blades off. It’s not a typical build, and I don’t see why so many warriors don’t think past berserker.
WvW I use sword/shield & rifle atm or bow if im defending a tower. It’s the same as my PvE build. With my gear it doesn’t matter. I do lvl 28 fracs daily and wvw is like killing rabbits. I have been playing sense first open beta though.

Every build and weapon setup will work in PvE, its that easy, the only difference is the Greatsword wielders will be dishing out a lot more damage than you are. Sword has a nice leap but staying on top of your target and keeping them locked down is rarely an issue here. From the sounds of it you’re not in Berserker’s gear either so your damage must be very sub-par, and considering damage is our only job, you’re not making a very good warrior there…. Err… No offence.
Used to run Greatsword/Axe/Shield in WvW but lately I keep going back to Greatsword/Longbow. Sit around 3k armor with knight armor and berserker trinkets. I run a 10/30/20/0/10 build and use Melandru runes for more toughness and condition removal (dogged march and lemongrass). So I can forego condition removals and pick up traits like FGJ, Fear Me, and Bull’s Charge.
I really am enjoying the longbow – they should just default it to 1200 range though. I can’t justify speccing in that line just to get the range I need when I’m not booning it up.
My other set of gear offers me permanent swift/fury/might from signet of rage and I use the rifle with it in FULL berserker gear with a mix of water, monk to get 40% boon duration. It’s fun but not something I can stomach long. Skilled players eat me 1 on 1 but it’s fun landing 15k hits with f1. This spec is 30 in arms and discipline for the burst mastery and extra crit damage.
Oh I forgot to add I could care less about if I am newbing it up using a Greatsword. It has the best mobility of all the weapon choices AND I can afford to forego movement strikes with my condition removal setup and get away on a dime whenever I want. Sometimes I will throw in endure pain pending on how many enemies I want to toy with before I get away.
I find it amazing really how many players out there get locked down for the full duration of pin down. Drop a f1 bomb on them and they are either almost dead or close to it. Simple bull’s charge, 100blades, and as they get up whirlwind usually does it over for them. Simple, effective, mobile, and in control. Warrior needs all the help they can get.
I am going to eventually tow with a mace/shield, greatsword build to try and stun 100blades more often. I can see the interrupt pretty sick too to disrupt heals.

I never said I don’t use zerker, but it’s a hybrid, and im saying ppl don’t think about how when they put 20 points in arms and they’re primary is a GS that it’s gonna do much. Perception comes with Arms but it also has condition dmg which is laughable with a GS.
Ur better off getting your crit chance else where, and inveting at least 10 of those points in tactics for leg specialist, and the other 10 in discipline. Blade Trail is the most under used GS skill, and ppl don’t think to improve it to immobilize someone for over a second depending on ur condition duration, plus after immobilized they’re crippled. I’ve tried my GS build out and it does rule. but the condition dmg with a sword is insane, and often not taken into account with direct dmg.
I’m aware that you can cut the CD on GS through arms, but with how short the CD is on GS skills ppl must be morons to think 20% reduced time is gonna take anything worth while away. The might is really the best part of that trait. Watching a warrior use 100b in pvp is fun for me because i love to shield bash or pommel strike them when they’re dumb enough not to have any stability, or disable they’re opponent. They must think ppl are stupid if they’re gonna sit there and take it.

Telling some one they aren’t a ‘good’ warrior is rather silly. Define ‘good’? Pretty sure he is having fun and dishing ENOUGH dps.

With “damage” you mean “free rally for the enemy”, right?
Said that, Sacrificing bull’s charge and frenzy (which are not my favourite, considering how our bust is easily avoided and their long cooldown) for some other ways to gain Precision and crit damage, you can have almost the same damage. But you won’t die in a sneeze.
You will never be able to know what an engineer is going to do next…

Being a GS using warrior is actually quite a challenge. EVERYONE can easily move out of the way of a 100b attack. They only time they can’t is when they are cc’d. I play GS/LB and it gives me decent results. I have ranged attacks, condition dmg and I can switch to direct damage. LB is way easier to use than the GS, that is unless your target is just standing there being your target dummy… which doesn’t happen much :P
I like Hammer and Longbow with 30 in discipline for almost constant burst skills and massive Might stacking through using Earthshaker to blast finish into Combustive Shot. Arcing Arrow also generates Area Might when fired into Combustive Shot. I can quite easily maintain 14 stacks of Might by myself.
