Had some fights against warriors today and they always ended because they hit me 6-7 times with a single (1!) whirlwind attack dealing instant 13-16k dmg. Anyone else experienced this?

no it was not bugged death recap, i double checked the combat logs.

Quickness maybe? It makes them whirl faster and move a shorter distance (at least i think it works that way. If not, it might have been the other way around → Slow).

Using Whirlwind Attack while having Quickness makes the distance traveled much lower. This means that the hits are closer together and can hit way harder than normal. God help you if you’re near a wall.

I’m torn on this. One the one hand it’s one of the few things warrior has going for it. On the other hand it can sometimes feel downright cheap to just pull a huge hit out of nowhere.

I would say you’re exaggerating the numbers though. Even hitting every attack on someone up against the wall you would have to be the glassiest spec there is to get hit THAT hard. The Mighty Skull Crack build in my sig can get 20-25 stacks of might and use WW Attack and not hit that hard.

I still dislike the strength of greatsword in general although every profession with it pretty much uses it (for power builds).

In the case of warrior, its mostly just the whirlwind attack hitting for so much while evading. I can understand if they had you against a wall or were immobilized to see some serious damage but just to be tapped by the skill is an easy 4k+ which is ridiculous. Combined with quickness on a short cooldown and a surplus of cc great sword is ridiculously powerful and easy to use in any game mode. I still prefer axe/axe though, hardly see anyone use it and its quite strong with the right build.

I don’t even… You sure it’s not 2012? You know, omgwtf mighty GS, what-is-dodge-button, etc?

Its a very easy and effective weapon set, can you argue that?

The heavy hits are there and if they manage to get you with even a little bit of cc 100b cuts deep without needing a full channel (full channel usually means death). Not saying it is unstoppable but good god is it easy. How many evades do you know of that can hit over 6k?

Sadly, I’ve gotten as high as 13k on squishy targets and not up against a wall. WW is absolutely brutal with Quickness and Might. I would hate to see it nerfed since it’s one of my favorite skills in the game (it’s just a very satisfying skill to use) but I would totally say it was justified if it did get nerfed.

Let’s just say, never have your back against a wall when a Warrior swaps to greatsword, especially if that Warrior is glassy.

You think 4k is a lot of damage? It’s also the only skill that should consistently hit a good Mesmer, Thief, Engie and especially Ele.

WW attack should hit up to 4 times only. Skill tooltip says “number of impacts: 4”. Wiki says:

“A stationary enemy in its path will be hit 2-4 times depending on their size and distance from the starting point. Starting in melee range (130 units), player characters and smaller enemies will be hit 2-3 times, while bigger creatures will be hit all 4 times. The size of a creature usually matches their selection circle.

Used against an obstacle in an angle that prevents advance or while immobilized will allow you to deliver all 4 hits to enemies in range."

If you were hit 6-7 times by a single WW attack you should report it as a bug.

If you watch that at 0.25 speed it looks like that 12k is actually from the partial 100b just before Whirlwind. I think you only put two hits into your targets with Whirlwind there.

Could be wrong, but it’s how it looks when you slow it down.

Whirlwind hits a maximum of 4 times. It cannot hit more than 4 times in one attack on one target.

Because you activated it. I’m not suggesting you didn’t use whirlwind, only that the 12k damage label was from the 100b that preceded it.

It’s at 4:35. The partial 100b gets the damage to about 12.3k, then he whirlwinds through them.

I suspect the damage tag for whirlwind was placed in front of the 12k tag from the 100b, but on the side of the opponent that was facing Holl when he initiated whirlwind. There was a bit of lag, and by the time it appeared Holl was on the opposite side the whirlwind damage tag was placed behind the 100b tag from Holl’s new perspecctive, making it appear as though the 12.3k was from the whirlwind he just executed.

Ahhh ok Choppy, I thought you were referring to the first fight. The one at 4:35 was definitely because of the 100b before it.

@ the OP: 13-16k Whirlwind Attacks are very possible with full zerk, 25 might, some vuln, 25 bloodlust stacks and quickness.

I think someone posted a video about this before, which had Slow making a warrior run further. Presumably, Quickness would do the opposite.

My guess is the approach taken for movement affecting boons/conditions was to ignore speed modifiers. Since Quickness/Slow affect activation time (rather than modifying movement speed), they would still affect total distance travelled.

Quite right. I just went from the start of his link, which was midway through the video or so. But, at 0:30, there’s clearly a 12k whirlwind against that ranger with only14 stacks of might. Craziness.

At the time where the warrior hits the final (12K) hit on that ranger he has:

16 stacks of might, Quickness, Fury (this was a crit. hit), had unspecified food on, unspecified utility. On top of that, 3 stacks of bloodlust, 5 stacks of Applied Strength.

Assuming full zerk, if you consider possibly ascended… I dont see why anyone’s surprised of a 12K hit against a Ranger.

It just added up, a hit like that would not be possible in a normal sPVP setting. (i think)

I played around a bit in Heart of the mists at the target golems and

-there is a way to hit more than 4 times with whirlwind
it is not easy, you need to get quickness buff in the middle of the whirldwind animation. You can try it with frenzy if you want.

As mentioned previously, more than 4 hits with whirlwind is definitely a bug. But a lot of damage calculated properly on 4 hits is fair game, imo.

You clean 3 conditions with arcing slide per target. If you got 6 condi on you and hit 2 persons at same time you cleanse all 6 condi. Didnt tried more (i dont have anyone to condibomb me above that number) but i guess thats enough either way. It was supposed to clean olny 3 after all.

I also managed to get 6 hits on whirl multiple times.
