Warrior or Guardian
What do you want from the gameplay? Are you speaking of sPvP, WvWvW, PvE? What specifically of PvE/sPvP/WvWvW? Do you want to level quickly, be good at DEs, run dungeons, be a roamer in WvW, be a bunker in sPvP, do hotjoin, etc.
“What should I play?” is not a valid question without specific parameters.

Hi guys,
And yes….another one of these. Lol.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time trying the different profs of the game and finally narrowed it down. My main will be an Ele, simply because of their versality in so many situations. BUT, i get burnt out quick and I want a melee driven class. (Hated thief, btw)
Then you probably don’t want Warrior, Warriors are either shout/banner or rifle or longbow, all of them will help your team and give you lots of ranged damage.

Yeah, sorry about the late edit. Noob at forum posts…

Ok, I got ya. Yeah, I mainly don’t want to be “stuck” with having to build a certain way, i.e. full defense to survive dungeons. I understand I won’t be running glass cannon in dungeons, as I’m certainly not on the skill level yet to time dodging, distance, etc. So I guess I’m wondering, can I be survivable in dungeons (if played half-way intelligently, of course), but still lay the smackdown with DPS properly? Or does a Warrior have to load up on Def traits?

Don’t listen to him. With the current state of the warrior, you have a steep learning curve because we have very little to no sustainability.
Just spec a bit into defense, go defense-based armor, and pick up a shield + endure pain if you extremely bad at dodging and new to dungeons

Thank you for that. Also, do we contribute decently to a group? Like our banners and shouts? Is it odd if a warrior would run with full banners going or full shouts, or a mix of both filling Util bar?
Banners are very good if a little unwieldly. Standouts are Discipline and Tactics, as they provide long-lasting benefits that you can’t easily get through utilities elsewhere. You can easily trait to have near-100% uptime with minimal investment. They can also be traited to provide an extremely easy fire-and-forget source of group-wide regeneration, but that requires significantly more trait points.
Shouts are also pretty good, as most of them are on a relatively short CD compared to the shouts other professions have access to. Sinking 30 points into Tactics to make shouts heal, and using 6 Superior Runes of the Soldier to make them remove conditions is a fairly common support build, but 1-2 of them are worth taking regardless, even for damage oriented builds.
It’s all about playstyle honestly. I love my warrior to death but I hate playing him in pvp (feels too slow and clunky). I much prefer my Guardian for pvp and pve alike just because he has blink skills and aegis blocks which make jumping from target to target or just keeping pinned on one target extremely easy. Guardian DPS is pretty comparible to Warrior imo, because you can spec both out to be glass cannony and both will be able to blow away anything they fight (highest crit on my Warrior was 10k to someone in a single hit, and 14k on my Guardian between 2 moves that were used at the same time.)
don’t listen to daecollo, he’s known by his stupid comments in warrior section

Listen to this guy. It’s wise to avoid daecollo.
Also, be wary of some of the people posting. A lot of their comments contradict each other across threads. There are quite a few guys whose builds mysteriously change every time they post.

How well you contribute is more based on how well you play
That being said, banner warrior is an excellent source of aid for the team. The regeneration is very nice as well… and nothing like instant resurrecting your team with Warbanner. However, if there is another source of regeneration, it is better to avoid going banners.
Then there are the shout builds. It’s not a bad way to learn how to play as your DPS is still decent and you get a few extra heals… The best thing about this is that you get used to the ranges of shouts… but I honestly would not recommend it. The heals are rather small and not worth the amount of efficient power you sacrifice. If you really love supporting though, it’s not a bad build.
If you go three shouts, make sure they are “For Great Justice” “On My Mark” “Shake it Off”
You want to maximize boon duration w/ runes and trait line. It’s a pretty good learners build although I would recommend just getting Knight’s exotics and learning from there.
After hundreds of hours of gameplay, I still use full Knight’s w/ Berserker accessories. 300ish power for 2x damage mitigation =

Well explained. Thank you very much. And thank all you guys for taking the time to answer. I really appreciate the advice
I have both at lvl 80 since September.
Here is my feedback.
“Fun”
Equally fun, engaging and adrenalinic vs hard content, equally boring vs easy content.
“Damage”
Warrior will always deal tons more DPS than even the glassiest Guardian, except maybe in the case of a shout heal build.
“Survivability”
Guardian, uncontested.
With Altruistic Healing+boon duration you cannot die unless you want it (or your team is dead and you’re heavily CC’d).
Ultimately here is the verdict for me:
- if you want to play DPS go Warrior because a DPS Guardian deals pretty low DPS in comparison and supports very little when using that build.
- if you want to play team support / tank go Guardian because Warrior is not immortal like Guardian regardless of gear/build.
DO NOT make a DPS guardian… PLZ dont…
we call them “wish i was warrior builds”….
Guardian is Excellent when spec’d in AH + support but boring cuz it has crap DPS.
Guardian is a wannabe Warrior when spec’d in zerker gear with a GS.
