Where do you use a mace?
Mace main hand : It’s not the best option anywhere, it’s a niche weapon. I know that some pvp build use it, but…
Off hand mace : The vulnerability it give make it part of the meta in PvE.
My answer is going to only be applicable to PvE. I’m not sure if that’s what you wanted, but you did not specify what game mode you meant at all anyways.
Mace mainhand is a smart choice for bosses that require frequent blocks, for example right now Lupicus in Arah has been bugged for over 2 weeks with his autoattack so you can make the fight much easier by going GS + mace/sword instead of GS + axe/sword.
Another example would be Mai trin, where your primary weapon should be axe mainhand, but in the event that you need another block for her teleport shot you can swap to mace mainhand and absolutely never need to worry about being conservative with your blocks.
Just know that regardless of what way you want to look at it, mace mainhand is suboptimal in the sense that it deals way less damage than axe, so it’s somewhat of a “crutch” if you will.
Mace offhand, on the other hand, is the offhand of choice that the warrior should take in the case that they don’t need any defensive aid from sword offhand. It provides 10 stacks of vuln on a relatively short cooldown that cleaves, making it significantly more efficient than the utility “on my mark” and an overall DPS increase for both solo and group settings.
im using mace shield in WvW atm. its not bad but not great. with stuns I can hold out against multiple ppl pretty easy or win most 1v1s.
I much prefer sword warhorn vigor build, much more active
Just curious since we are one of the few classes that can wield such an uncommon weapon.
(PvP / WvW point of view).
The main-hand mace has a stun, an interrupt and a block – this makes it primarily a support weapon, which lets you mitigate attacks of enemies in a active way, and set up your own. It’s mainly used in solo fights.
I’m aware of two kind of builds which use it:
- Power builds use mace/shield on one weapon set to defend and stun, and some high damage weapon as an alternate set (e.g. a greatsword), to inflict damage once the opponent has been disabled. These builds may use the trait Unsuspecting Foe to maximize the critical chance, then re-allocating points from precision to other stats (such as toughness and critical damage).
- Condition builds may use the main-hand mace as well because it offers frequent interrupts, which synergize well with the trait Distracting Strikes, and possibly the runes of Perplexity. The frequent block may also be used with the runes of the Guardian (burn-on-block).
I’ve never used the offhand mace in PvP, only in PvE dungeons, but one could probably devise funny things with it.
Regards.
Mace off hand is also great in wvw/pvp and duels, no one these days expect a ranged knockdown from a warrior

Ferg Crossing
Nowhere, pretty much. GW2 is full of useless abilities.
usually on their heads. It’s super effective!
I really liked the Mistforged maces because they went so well with my Protectors armor, so I got them and pretty much use them exclusively for open world PvE. World bosses or champ training. For WvW I still run GS/LB or Hambow, and PvP I have this Axe/Sword build I get a giggle with. And I don’t bother with fractal/dungeons anymore but knowing the scene if you show there with any maces you’re more liable than not to get a brick chucked at your head.
They’re a fun toy to play with…but lack a place to really shine. Other weapons just do it better.
