i may have just made a mistake in buying gear for my warrior. after hitting 80 i immeadiately went to the vigil and bough tthe full set fo their gear and their GS. after using it for a little while i have not really found it to be keeping me alive in PvE as much as i thought it would be. was this a waste of my gold? or would a simple change in play style make it more effective?

Isn’t vigil gear just rare tier?

Order’s armors are only rare quality as well. Also a change in your play style is going to keep you alive more than your armor will. You’re using Soldiers armor stats which give you quite a bit of extra survivability while not sacrificing power in the process.

I’d suggest if you like the armor style to do Sorrows Embrace, Honor of the Waves and Ascalon Catacombs for the same stats but exotic quality and transmute it. It may help but not as much you’ll think it does.

Make sure you’ve updated your amulet/accessories to level 80 stuff. A lot of your stats come from there.
