warrior versus ranger
dunno if the is “a good comparison”, but… my 2 cents:
the way my warrior contributes in dungeons is by facetanking enemies, whilst honking her horn and throwing banners all around. it’s hilarious!
the way my ranger contributes is by standing really far away and pelting arrows.
i tried for a while to make a close range ranger, with traps and stuff, but in the end, it just wasn’t worth it.
warrior for close range dps, ranger for long range. my ranger even avoids the stacking stuff at times, because it’s just so much easier to dps from afar. if my warrior is pressed in close combat, i can always fall back and drop arrow fire stuff (until healing signet gets me back up).
If you want ranged DPS neither warrior or ranger are best at that. Best ranged DPS in the game is Elementalist.
Pick warrior if you want to melee things with the option to do okish ranged damage with a rifle.
Pick Ranger if you want to use pets basically.
Pick Elementalist if you want to nuke things from range.
From easyest to hardest to play also in that order. Warrior easiest, Ranger then Elementalist hardest.
Another option is thief. Short bow is very strong on a thief. Not the best ranged but probably the best burst of all.

Actually, if you want great ranged dps and build variety, it’s Engi over Ele imho.
However, since your question was about Warrior vs. Ranger…
Ranger is the better ranged fighter, though it outputs more damage with its melee builds. The major drawback of rangers is that their pets, which account for a huge chunk of their total damage, are easily killed by dungeon and world bosses. You must be situationaly aware of them at all times.
Warrior requires no such micro-management and is absolutely first & foremost a melee fighter.

Medium armor looks ugly.
because he doesn’t know it himself

Ranger is a total faceroll for levelling, open world group events, like temples, farming etc., PVE roaming. I agree that the ele is hardest, though.
Rifle/Greatsword has almost the exact same playstyle as a Longbow Ranger but it will do more damage, has better burst, has better utility, has better survivability, and can escape better than the Ranger can.
If you want to play a condi oriented class that is great at roaming and dueling, Ranger. For anything else while also not being half bad at the roaming condi meta, Warrior is it.
Ranger is the better ranged fighter, though it outputs more damage with its melee builds.
i don’t find that rangers manage to stay alive efficiently in melee.

It’s true. Ranger defense comes primarily from high endurance regen and lotsa dodging. That active defense requires paying close attention to attack animations. Also, 1h sword makes perfectly timed dodging difficult, even with multiple dodges built into its skills.
Unfortunately, Ranger deals better damage with melee than it does at range. So if you’re going to go melee anyway, you’re better off going warrior.

it’s sort of the impossible situation though, innit: if ranger was actually able to perform consistently in melee, then the damage would top ranged. but they can’t (due to the above mentioned issues), so it won’t.
i’m comfortable dealing big numbers from afar, swapping some drakes around (and popping a spirit here and there). greatsword for surviving close stacks.
Warrior is easier to learn play and master. Easiest of all classes actually. It’s a great beginner class. Ele is muh harder to play and master
