x2 axe + GS in sPVP, is it viable
Hello,
This is a very offensive build, so if you have the skills to play it, then it can work. However, while I cannot refute it as is, I have to say that I wouldn’t feel confident playing it:
- I don’t like the greatsword as a dueling weapon: I think that it somehow lacks control, and that its key damage skills may not hit efficiently. Granted, they’d do damage anyway, and the weapon provides nice mobility, yet it requires you to set up a situation (you chose the bolas for this) before you can use it – and that is if the bolas hits and if the opponent does not block, evade, take invul and so on. If you want to play double axe, and not use a ranged weapon, then I’d recommend you rather complement your Axe/Axe with some Axe/Shield, keeping the sigils of battle and intelligence in order to get sure-hit bursts. The shield would give you a stun and a block, which I find quite useful in my own duels (I play axe/shield + rifle these days).
- You have no stability equipped. Your choice of utilities is not bad at all, but going without stability seems dangerous (either for stomping or against controlling duelling classes).
- You have no control, and cannot prevent enemy stomping. Also, you’ll have to flee from borderline situations, when a bit of defense could help you come out victorious.
- Going 20 in Arms and Defense is fine, but I think that you could go to 25 in each of them, because the Armored Attack and Attack of Opportunity are interesting damage boosters.
Just my 2c, HTH.

these are all valid points.
gs is for mobility only. gap closer for openers and get away from trouble. gs damage is not reliable.
instead of bolas i’ll probably go back to balance stance. bolas hardly ever work anyways.
yeah, no cc. i plan to try axe/shield + gs next, that may be a marginal gain. i’ll also try “shield master – defense I trait” instead of “sure footed +25% stance” (precious as it is)
Switching the second axe for a shield and getting the balanced stance would give a build that I’d be definitely more at ease playing. If you keep your 3 stances, then I suggest you keep the sure footed trait (if you’re like me and you count the seconds when you activate your stances, you know how valuable it can be).
Also, in my current Axe / Shield setting, I like having “Mighty Defenses”: you block with shield #5 your opponent attacks (some of which are whirling), get tremendous amount of might in return, then stun with #4 and burst with #F1 (I have a sigil of paralyzation on my shield, and run with “Unsuspecting Foe”, but with your GS you’d have to rely on lady luck alone for the critical chance).
Elegie what kind of build are you running right now? If I may ask
Hi,
Elegie what kind of build are you running right now? If I may ask
It’s an axe/shield + rifle build, burst-based. Aside from the axe combo I mentioned before, I also use fear right before the rifle burst (can be lethal against classes without stun breaker, especially if you just switched to the rifle and has intelligence stacks on). The weapons actually work nicely together, the rifle hits hard, puts cripple and vulnerability and has a knock-back, while the axe AA chain is great, and combined with the shield lets you perform powerful melee.

I would ditch the offhand axe, even with the Whirling Axe’s damage being higher in PvP its DPS is still lower than just auto attacking. With a shield or sword you have some defense and a way to set up combos.
I agree with the use of Mighty Defense, it’s strong with runes of Strength because each attack is some 11 seconds of might and vs a Thief or other fast attacking foes you’ll find yourself grinning and going “my turn.” I actually prefer LB with axe but depending on your team the GS is good for roaming and has good combo capabilities.
I’m still wrestling between Great Fortitude and Short Temper. Unlike LB, GS w/o the trait doesn’t give any Might. That being said ST is more situational because some builds have no blocks at all. It can be great vs Guardians or other Warriors because you can just AA away and get free might and adrenaline.
A good combo is swap to axe while under pressure → Shield Block → Shield Bash → Eviscerate → Swap to GS → Whirlwind → Bull’s Charge → 100b. Hit that and most targets are dead.
If your team has a Ele or Thief I would suggest leaving roaming to them and run something like this that gives you tons more sustain while still having good damage.
Old Man Burr (War), Bad Hat Ben (Engi), Manly Manny Manson (Guard)

I made a few changes in the traits and found this build working out very well, it takes a while to get used to the rotations and adept to certain situations, but I like it, thank you
some absurd stuff people are saying here.
saying that GS is not reliable for damage is like saying that mace stun isn’t reliable, sword isn’t reliable, and axe aren’t reliable. GS still remains one of the best weapons in a duel.
the main problem (emphasis on main ) with any axe/ GS build is that it’ll do well in duels, but almost completely useless in a team fight setting. you bring nothing to the table. you deal damage, sure, but you lack the CC or survivability to put a hard pressure on the enemy that other weapon sets can provide. Hambow is still the best at maintaining this pressure (stun works defensively too).
If you absolutely want to use GS, I’d suggest the GS/Longbow combo but again, you’ll find that it’s not the best build currently available in teamfights.
i tried off hand shield instead of axe. didnt work out for me. may be its a skill lvl thing. i’m playing hotjoins and %60 soloQ.
i swapped bolas back for balance stance but otherwise left it intact.
thx for advice folks
