So, after FINALLY getting Dekaron out of my life, I have decided to purchase Guild Wars 2 for a friend of mine so we could play it. We both are pretty PvP focused MMO players but I also love playing the actual PvE aspect of this game sometimes. Anyway, he decided to delve right into SPVP and dear god, what a ragefest it has been.

I’m not good at SPVP either, but I at least am willing to play the actual game and get the hang of things before attempting to PvP. But he refuses to play the PvE side of things. And now I feel as if my $30 is going to waste and he is going to stop playing because he doesn’t want to take the time to learn. He expected to go into PvP on his first day and just slaughter people, but he’s the one getting slaughtered and he says it isn’t because he’s unskillful, it’s because he’s getting pilejacked by tons of people by himself.

The obvious response to this complaint is that he needs to pay more attention and follow his teammates, but he isn’t listening to me. Help me out, community.

If he reads this, it has a pretty detailed explanation of tPvP which can (mostly) be brought over to hotjoins.

If he comes from a game like dekaron he will have a rough time.
The animations are much quicker here and ofcourse you don’t have the pay 2 win aspect in this game as you do in that game.
Not to mention the balance is absolute kitten at the moment in guild wars 2. So depending on what class he plays I can understand he has a rough time in spvp. I hope for your friend he’s not playing ele cause they pretty much die from a breeze of wind atm. and if he just started playing the game I can only imagine how horrible it is for him. Even me after playing the game for a year and knowing pretty much every skill in the game get killed pretty often by ridiculous cheese builds.

You need to have some practice before jumping into pvp. I feel like that’s pretty obvious for just about every game, but in GW2 it’s even more important because movement is such an integral part of combat. Knowing where/how to position yourself, knowing when to dodge, or knowing when not to dodge, are key. Not only that, learning all of the skills takes a long time. Everyone starts out with the same stats which means the only difference between players (more or less) will be skill. There are people playing PvP today that started doing so over a year ago, so it’s just stupid to assume you can jump in day one and “slaughter people.”

That’s another one of his issues. He keeps jumping from class to class, but he says his favorite is Guardian. Idk specifically what build he uses

He expected to go into PvP on his first day and just slaughter people, but he’s the one getting slaughtered and he says it isn’t because he’s unskillful, it’s because he’s getting pilejacked by tons of people by himself.

Find an empty hotjoin server and duel him over and over on different classes. Once he’s doing okay, join a 5v5 hotjoin match and try to win. When you open the pvp tab, there is a button at the top left corner to apply filters. Create a filter for 5v5 matches. Avoid 8v8, they will teach you nothing. He can also join 1v1 duel servers to practice his class/build.

Please do not attempt to play any tournaments before both of you are r20+.
