Totally agree, hope ANET will too.
Having that would completely defeat the purpose of Mesmers and their clones. Also on the necro, just target him and press CTRL+ T to set a target to him, and the rest of the team now can target that necro instead of the pets. Problem solved.

how is completely rendering useless the mesmer mechanics a good suggestion?
Many defensive abilities require a target, players shouldn’t be hit by high burst dmg without being given the chance to react.
in every other MMO to date being hit by a player with no target results in your targeting the player hitting you.
No MMO is perfect and LOS and obstruction exploits are bound to happen every player should have the chance to react. That allows a player to use skill in pvp.
try to click with left mouse button on your target when there is confusion and you will see how easier than a shortcut it is.
I would like to see the input of non theif classes as to targeting because quite frankily the lack of targeting rules in this MMO greatly benefits your class. Target nearest enemy is quite broken atm and will often select a target that is not the closest to you i have it hotkeyed and the time wasted in clicking a button to target garuntee’s a theif FAR too much dmg from pistol whip.

maybe repeating you it is not “every mmorpg” could help you to understand why we repeat learn to adapt and play, instead of whining on forum. it is not wow, if you liked its options, go play wow.
Auto targeting is something that I turn off in games that have that option, it creates many more problems than it solves.
As for thieves, your build matters and the 1st thing you should be doing is not trying to fight them toe to toe but to make them use their initiative through dodge mechanic and then kill them.
People complaining about thieves are usually pretty bad with terribad builds with no defence and think if they mash their keys and don’t beat them they are OP.
Using technique and skill will beat most thieves.
Saying that, I feel that both thieves and mesmers should have their numbers tweaked slightly, not by much but still have it done.

It’s a great mechanic that facilitates skill rather then button mashing and would definitely add to gameplay in pvp here. I have yet to hear one reason why it would be bad to impliment just L2P and GTFO immaturity which is trolling and ranting.

Nothing I’ve suggested would change or defeat that class at all Target Last Enemy is already in the game and it allows you to re-aquire the mesmer the minute he makes a clone or re-invis’s from stealth so your arguement is invalid as you can already do what your saying would defeat that class. YEs you can already do what you said would offset balance for that class. You should probably learn how targeting works before you comment on it.
What i suggested was that when your being attacked for the first time and you have NO target you auto target the player attacking you. To make up for the problem with targeting in large group pvp and glitches in targeting nearest player and los and obstruction.
i didnt ask your curriculum about gaming. it is a shortcut, not player skillness. and it is not good because some mechanical stuff in the game assume you need to improve your aim not let the game do it for you. i suggested you 2 things you are avoiding:
1_ this is not “every other mmo”, so it means you have to learn to adapt at his new mechanic
2_ you can use you mouse to aim the real mesmer/thief out the shadows/necro mm/ranger spirit. it require “skill” and don’t break mechanics in game.
and escluding some good games, others were full of bugs in the first months of the game. i am worried about your stay on those forums.
The thing is you do not NEED to target in this game, it has LoS mechanics, auto target would introduce ‘mistakes’ in your combat.
It is a ‘noob’ mechanic introduced in certain games and ‘exploited’ by better players who know that enemies have it turned on.
Scenario, I am your hated thief, I attack you, you auto target me, my necro team mate hits you you auto target them.
If you cannot see that this is a really bad ‘option’ well I can’t help you.
If you place a target technique that automatically chooses a Mesmer, you are beating down its mechanics. They would have to greatly increase Mesmer damage to account for its loss in survival. The other multipet class is necro. It is really easy to notice the difference between a necro and its pets. If you are melee, you very rarely really need a target, just swing your weapon at whatever is close to you and you will hit it. If you are ranged then a lot of times you need a target. However, ranged has a lot more time to click-target, not to mention AoE abilities that can get rid of clones fairly easily.
Therefore, 1) you don’t really need auto-target on players, 2) the change would be way too destructive of one of the classes and would need even more work on it. 3) Thieves can have 1 skill which has pets and they look really different from the guy that summons them. No need to mention them in a targeting focused thread.
So there you go, no, we don’t need to implement “target nearest player”

NOPE not at all what i suggested nor is this how it works on any other mmo or has it every worked like that!
I have NO target you attack me I target you, I have a target someone else attacks me I REMAIN ON my current target. It only targets a player when you have no target and they attack you, it doesn’t jump to every player that attacks you.
The screen veiw in this game is not the best, so you should be able to target someone who’s attacking you when you HAVE nothing else targeted!
Your not even reading whats being stated, because the real issue is you dont know “Target last target” is already in the game lol and want to be able to kill people before they can even target you which is very possible with broken haste/burst as it currently is.
And it’s more necessary here then any other MMO because I have never played any MMO TO DATE THAT HAD PRESS A BUTTON DEAL 75% dmg spammable abilities.

If you could by pass all the pets/clones while already having a target then that would be a game breaking mechanic. The fact that you have to have no target to use the feature already implemented is already a draw back to it. The game is fine as it is, target is fine. Finding the real Mesmer displays skill, using a one click Mesmer magnet doesn’t.

I don’t believe that a Necro’s numerous pets were constructed to stop a player from targeting them clones yes certainly but Target Last Target was already placed in the game to deal with them. It’s a mechanic that already exists.
Auto target would only stop a player from getting destroyed before he could react to a players intial onslaught. the attacking player would still have the advantage over the player he attacked, but having abilities in the game that deal over 70% of a players life gives the player being attacked little time to react!
You really thinks it’s fair to add insult to injury but not giving the player a chance to even Target the attacking player when they are already at such a disadvantage?
I doubt any Necro would disagree with this being implemented not even the target neart enemy player key because Necro’s don’t attack at close quarters. nor any Mesmer as it doesn’t effect there class at all, the only class I see opposing it is theives.

But it does target the closest thing in front of you if you swing a weapon if you don’t have a target
YES! you could use escape to drop the target you could use your auto target to aquire someone attacking you. It doesn’t take away from anything already in the game just allows for more skillful play.

this happens, but in tourney doesn’t count if i die to a thief, count if i keep a “node” more time than opponents. so it is fine if i died to have an advantage in points.

Beating a player through the use of skills is fine beating a player through bad interface or targeting issues is bad design. You still get one attack before the player locks on you and can react regardless you shouldn’t be able to slay a player because screen clutter doesnt allow him to target you before he’s dead.

it is called sneak attack , and thieves LIVE for them. it is an advantage for cannon glasses to hit confusing opponent who doesn’t know what is happening.
with your option, i sneak attack, you see my bar over the screen knowing im attacking you and u can react faster than with your usually reflections(?).
I’m sorry I just don’t really feel the need for that to be implemented, if they do…then they do and it won’t bother me.
It sucks that we spent half the thread trying to understand your original post…From it, all I understood was that you wanted a key pressed that would automatically choose the mesmer for you among a mob of clones, or that you wanted that if the mesmer + 4 clones were attacking you the player would be autoselected. Hence all the misunderstanding leading to this point…
