I have no doubt some servers have better players and are better organized but I do not think that is the root problem in WvW.
Any server (with the best players and best organization) can be beat when the population numbers are 3 to 1. We need population balance or some other crazy methodology where a much lower population server can balance out the score against overwhelming odds.
OR
Go to 24-48 hour matches.. there are many ways to add some balance to this game without a complete overhaul of the WvW mechanics, I am sure a dozen more have been suggested on these forums.
This point is.. this isn’t fun.

Tier 3 is an interesting beast because of the population distribution. DB has a very numerous SEA presence with a relatively small NA population. On the other hand, YB and Mag have very large NA populations (YB’s peaks at about 8:00 PM EST or so). So, for the 8 hours of NA primetime, Mag usually has the highest PPT with YB and DB in second/third.
The biggest problem is the 8 hours of SEA primetime where DB’s oceanic crew are free to take entire maps without resistance. Mag and YB then wake up to maps filled with fully upgraded keeps and then have to spend all day preparing for NA primetime by turning everything to paper. Even then, Mag especially lacks the manpower to effectively hold anything, so the game turns into ensuring that the keeps and towers have been recently flipped.
The unfortunate part is that there is no effective way of balancing population in the tiers without negatively impacting an entire region’s worth of people. It’s easy to say that any timezone outside of NA should be compensated for the lack of NA players, but what about the hundreds of oceanics or euros that play during those times? For them, it’s primetime and it’s NA that undoes everything they’ve accomplished during their timeslots.
Now, most of this has just recently changed because DB has seen at least one guild transfer in with 70+ members. They’re now a Tier 2 server in terms of coverage, which means we have 4 Tier 2 servers with the requisite coverage periods. THAT is what isn’t going to be fun.

The ratings are the great equalizer. A server gets trounced and it moves down. A server trounces and it moves up. Maybe it happens too slow. Perhaps some of you recall AN wanted WvW matches to be two weeks long! Mismatches would be annoying for less time if they were only 24 to 48 hours…I agree with you there. In that case, they’d probably need to lower the cost of seige and upgrades to make them more worthwhile.
Anyway, the fact is each server is currently in its position based upon merit (i.e. numbers). It’s a reasonable assumption that each higher ranked server has progressively (not linearly) higher WvW numbers. The fact that there is a larger gap between 7 and 8 than there is between 8 and 9 is unfortunate. It means that tiers fixed with 3 sides may not lead to reasonably even matchups, even over several weeks. Optimal matchups would take WvW population into account, not just the record. Unfortunately population on a given server changes from week to week so population-based matching would be difficult.
Right now I’m in a place where I don’t feel bad for Mag at all, given the QQing over the last few weeks on the forums. However DB (my server) has been in the same situation, while FA and TC were in T3 before SoS went down. Being outnumbered, as you say, is not as fun, especially if it’s week after week.

MA 30855I believe WvW in this game for a majority of the tiers is in trouble. I’ll exclude Tier 1/2 from this as they may have great numbers 24×7.
Maybe it’s too hard to fix the balance issues given the game design.

How do you propose they ‘fix’ population imbalance? they can’t magic up players from nowhere.
Each borderland is capped, same number of players allowed in on each side.
I still think two games should run every day: One from, say, 8 PM to 8 AM, and another from 8 AM to 8 PM (EST). Servers would have separate ratings and matchups for each time zone, and players would be able to participate in both. Yes, there would be many problems to iron out, but I think properly implemented, it would be more fun for everyone than Coverage Wars.
