Commander says - it's hard to tell
Get on teamspeak. Software is a free download and you can get yourself a cheap headphone with mic for the price of a pizza.
These ain’t the only fixes they have to introduce to the commander icon. That icon is just a blue taco atm, nothing more. The squad is an absolute joke and you have 0 commander options. If you try to command by typing you get muted for spamming. So yea, almost looks like Anet gets sponsored by teamspeak.
And I don’t want to sound cynical, it is great that we gte new stuff in WvW. But it ain’t what we ask for. So please, focus on the things we want instead of adding all these new things that could damage the fragil balance of WvW.

The fact commanders often ask you to get on a voice-system (outside of gw2) is directly related to the fact they get ‘muted’ on the teamchannel. I agree it’s kinda annoying at first to tell who is commanding and who is just talking in teamchat. Also the colors of map and teamchat are so similar, that often when fighting I don’t see the difference.
According to the wiki, commanders also should be able to edit maps. Draw on them for orders to go to or where to place what siege. But I’ve not seen that part working.

They can but don’t cuz requires squad and is a clunky timewaste like map drawing in parties better spent doodling with the map draw system then trying to accomplish anything

You need to be in their squad first for that to work and most people don’t do that. It is very rudimentary and I only saw it used once.

The map system is useless, the squad system is useless, but at least I can tell the supply of anyone standing between my legs :/
Squad is a joke tbh, have you tried getting pugs to all do something as complicated and baffling as that? Trust me, it’s a waste of time; pretty much because that’s what it is to them as well.

The best solution is the following steps:
1. Follow the blue dorito on the map until you see the giant zerg ball.
2. Then join the ball and continue following.
3. Profit
Rule 1 of WvWvW: stand on the commander icon.
Always.
If it moves, you move, if it stops you stop. If it charges and you all follow and wipe, deal with it, it happens. IF it runs away, get a new commander as that one sucks.
Ok, there is more to it than that, but if running with a zerg, the safest place to be is on the commander.

So many things GW2 did right, but the flexibility and functionality of the current Commander and Squad is terrible. MMO’s that came out 6 years ago had 10x the grouping system. No way to control the size or makeup of your squad? They need a private squad system at the very least.
No problem with following commanders in JQ. Maybe because JQ has their own public TS channel.

JQ does a good job supporting commanders. I’m just a little disappointed in the lack of support for those guilds (like ours) that prefer small-medium size havoc forces. When we use the commander and squad system to coordinate better, it distracts or takes away from those JQ commanders that are leading the zone. I just wish they had a guild commander or way of making a squad without showing the pin for us to coordinate better.
Running together in separate 5 person groups, marking one person who’s leading and using a 3rd party voice program is not an adequate substitution for a private squad.

There’s an in-game voice-system? Anyways, server wide Team-speak is for the server. Its a way for the Commanders to instantly communicate to each other across ALL WvW maps. Its also an easy access for the rest of the player base to join their server in the fights. Whether you run with the zerg, scout or any other duties you are performing.
Also, this patch has supposedly fixed the the Squad leader’s ability to ping the map and write on it.
