Commander: tag only visable to own squad
and thats why all commanders use teamspeak to coordinate.
I really like this idea. Then the Commander can decide if the Zerg following him/her is big enough to accomplish the goals they have and not keep attracting more people that could be working elsewhere on the map with a different commander.
Completely agree with this and it would be a great implementation to WvW in the upcoming updates. I say WvW, because I don’t think PvE commanders really mind how many people tag along with them.

Needs to be added.
Sad thing is well most likely will see very little change to commander function. Anert has barely enough Devs to even change tooltips for skills.
I bet that will just leave the “randoms” more lost because I’m sure every commander just like to work with their own guild/group.
I’ve even saw a commander (No names or guilds will be said) say once: “Whoever isn’t from my guild, please follow the other commander, not me”.

On Piken Square we very often have certain commanders working with guild only, while co-ordinating with other commanders who ‘pick up the randoms’ for numbers.
Depends on your server, but our server certainly would not have invisable commanders only.
Piken randoms are too good to be left unused!
But for some actions it just doesn’t help having people around not hearing the directions on TS and such.
I understand your point, but that would depend on how your server organises it’s WvW.

That happens on my server all the time. If the commander had the option of making their tag visible only to the squad following them they wouldn’t have to say that out loud. That way the randoms looking for a tag to follow would gravitate to the blue dorito that still needs people.

There’s several reasons for that. The main ones being the other commander needs people and you eat up boons that could’ve gone to guild members.

They complain when they don’t get help, and they complain when randoms try to help… I don’t understand the commander types…

It all depends on the goal of the commander that very moment.
My own guild sometimes assembles all the randoms on the map.
At other moments we ask them to join a commander of another guild, who we agreed with that he will take the randoms while our (and other guilds) do specific tasks and attacks.
Some of our guilds never ever want a random following them, not even one of the other raiding guilds on the map.
Why not? Simple: these guilds are using their strenght of perfect co-ordination and movement. Any one else following them doesn’t hear the orders each second, they don’t know the used tactics or can’t tell that it’s this or that tactic since they are on their TS or Vent.
The only ‘contribution’ a random makes to their attack is: give away their position to scouts… and as said: that includes members of other raiding guilds who are friendly with these very commanders.
It’s about strategy, nothing more.
I already mentioned that I consider Piken Square ‘randoms’ to be of a pretty good sort. They are very helpfull and follow as precise as anyone can who is not hearing the commands on TS after all.
We always have at least on commander who is tagged up for the randoms on the map(EB for my own guild usually).
I’m not aiming for selfish systems for commanders.
I merely ask for the option to be visable or not, depending on the strategy used by the commander and the guildgroup.
I realise that this will lead to some commanders just becoming invisable outside their squad 24/7.
But as long as there is some co-ordination with other commanders who are visable, than all is good and fair.
Some servers have this level of working together, and some might not have this.
I can’t tell for other servers, but I hope my suggestion wouldn’t suddenly remove all commander tags on the map for randoms.

this…
the need for people is highly variable depending on situation… in general though if your asked not to follow, or the commander and his guild all have their tags down, please dont follow him!
its sad when a commander is running with his tag off with his guild and we still wind up with more non guild members than guildies following us around and because of this we start loosing key objectives to not having enough people elsewhere.
Yes some commanders have reputations for being sucessful, and its certianly fun to follow someone like that, but its not whats best for the server, 1 commander cant be everywhere, and it has really been killing us in particular these past few weeks in terms of score because we cant be everywhere on a map all at once.
As someone who’s run multiple guild groups using just ventrilo and multiple guild groups with ventrilo and having my commander pin up….. it’s much more effective with the pin up hands down.
Everyone has different ideas of what is “fun”. For our guild that’s running together with up to 3-4 groups. Moving fast and hitting targets fast, cutting off reinforcement trying to get to their keeps. We have guild WvW nights and would like to use the commander pin for our Guild. We don’t want to lead the whole zone nor interfere with those people who are leading. We want to run with our guild and assist the zone commanders when we can.
The most effective in-game grouping system for coordinating in GW2 for over 5 people needs more flexibility. You need to be able to make squads private and/or the commander pin only visible to those people in the squad.
It’s just one of those things you have to accept.
A lot of guild groups, even though their commander is a commander, will not run with their commander icon on.
Pugs have become the bane of many guild groups, they see your strength as their own, they’ll rush in and attack everything in site, knowing the rest of us will have to clean up their mess, and they just need to hit each target once and they’ll get their XP. It’s win-win for them, but completely ruins your plans and tactics.
Of course most do it thinking they are helping, and most actually do listen when you tell them why you are only sending 4 people to take out guards, or hiding round the corner whilst 2/3 rams at the only things hitting the gates.
But then you have the ones who dont, who are there to ruin things deliberately.
As for OP’s suggestions, those of us who already run without commander icons already know this wont help, you will still run into pugs, and they will still do what pugs do best. All you can hope is that they are teh good kind of pug who either knows what you are doing without having to ask, or will listen to you.
Remember to buy the officially endorsed GW2 Steel Series Keyboard, it supports macros!
WvW, we only care if it affects the servers we play on.
I’d be happy if Anet would just fix /supplyinfo so players dont have to stand right ontop of me so I can see their supply. :x
Though I like the option of commanders choosing aa, squad only, ect…

also be good for those guilds/groups that just need an icon to follow while XP/Karma farming but don’t want ‘lead the map’
Secondary benefit is it would start to ‘force’ people to join commanders squads, which makes being a commander more effective and manageable.

Agree 100%.
I see mutiple guild groups running with the commander pin up so they can organize better. I also see other commanders and players in the zone start harassing those same guilds commanders because of too many pins or not leading properly.
The result…. those guild commanders drop the pin because it’s not worth the hassle. So instead of guilds being able to use the most effective in-game way to coordinate multiple groups they do without. Really needs to be a way to turn off the commander icon so only people in the squad see it.
