Ruins of Surmia

So I’ve been seeing people complain a lot about culling being worse this and culling being worse that.
But what has actually changed ?
To my experience these are the changes to the new Culling:
On a certain radius around you you can practically see everything and every enemy, no more fighting invisible mobs.
Allies seem to have a smaller radius than enemies on where you can see them even if they’re outside of your Max Radius (the no culling point, where culling is not needed)
If the number of allies/enemies is not too high you will still see them.
Everything, literally everything outside this radius will be invisible to you, I believe this is how culling was actually supposed to work before and it’s working accordingly.
What has not changed ? The time it takes for those kitten thieves to load! Does this mean the preset models aren’t working correctly ?
This is all to my experience, I run on a crappy laptop, with a crappy connection that has just enough speed, I’m no longer fighting invisible enemies in big zerg fights, now I am only fighting Fps lagg thanks to my kittenty laptop.

The change now splits culling between both allies and enemies. The previous system set allies as first priority. So if you were in a group of allies that met or exceeded the culling limit, you would only see those allies before you saw any enemies. The new system creates and equal weight of allies and enemies, so when the culling limit is reached, theoretically you should be seeing half of your allies and half of your enemies.
Truthfully, the new system is better. People who say otherwise are deranged. I can see something that I was never able to before: an enemy force moving to my position before they are on top of me dropping aoe. Sure, it isn’t perfect, but it is definitely an improvement. People that keep knocking culling and acting as if it is worse need to understand this was never supposed to solve the issue 100%, simply make it playable, which it did.
Id rather have culling let me see my enemies than my allies. Culling is being exploited to no end now.

Why would you insult people saying otherwise then you ? The new system Is worse, its a fact.I can also say that i have never experienced the culling this bad,i could before this new system, atleast see a group of 30 coming my way,now i have a problem with -20 as they appear invisi most of the time.It also affects pve now aswell, mobs are even turning invisible and the players in my surroundings aswell, weapons they are carying also start turning up invisble at times, you have no clue.

I assure you I’m perfectly sane. The game went from playable though sometimes frustrating to completely unplayable.

are all full of delusional players as well though?
So far every thread I’ve seen overwhelmingly puts the issue at much worse than before.

This is probably correct however that radius for enemies is way too small, plus there are slight delays as models load (even the default models) this may be caused by lag but that should be taken int account in the system.
There have been countless times since this patch came out that I have been able to see enemies from a distance that I would never be able to see before. You all seem to be expecting a perfect solution and to see every player/mob 100% of the time, but this patch never claimed to be that. Explain to me how getting hit by 40+ people that you could never see coming before the patch was playable, but being able to see people (in full or in part) when they come out of a portal, come out of stealth, run through a tower door, or charge from 2500 range is suddenly unplayable?
A major reason that individuals probably think this is worse is because they can see the culling actually happening because 50% of people are showing up instead of not being able to see anything. You are AWARE of what you aren’t seeing now instead of being, previously, blissfully ignorant of what the game engine wasn’t showing you. And being aware that there are people in a given area grants my guild a far greater ability to fight a battle.

It is a better system than before. As yes I can finally see the enemies from a fairly okay distance. Unlike the original system which got tremendously worse after being reinstated after the Trial (which was also slightly better). I can finally see enemies with a good rough estimate while running with between 10-20 guildmates and we’re able to fight accordingly. There are still some issues of course but it’s not as bad as before where nothing at all would show up but your health bar decreasing and some AoE effects. Then, your downed and respawn screen. The new system prevents this for me at about an 90% effectiveness over the original. Which is mostly due to lag and loading.
And basically what Riven said in the last paragraph. Not that us battling foes can agree on anything except spilling each other’s pixelated blood!!!!
Arrr!

You’re assuming your experience is the experience everyone else is having. read those threads if you care to understand what a large majority are experiencing.
I used to see 10 or so players render in a large group (25+). Then after 20 seconds or so the rest would render. Now I can’t see allies at random times out of combat. When approaching a large group of enemy I’m lucky to see 5 of them, and the randomly phase out to be replaced by 5 different enemy. In addition my allies aren’t rendered which makes it hard to move tactically with a commander. The is no consistency to who is being rendered when.
It also seems to have made ability lag in large fights worse. I’m not sure if it’s related or not, but this never happened on the scale it does since the patch.
I’m curious to know what kind of machine you’re running as the patch was supposedly a marked improvement for those with lower end machines.
Whilst some of us are seeing less allies, and a hell of a lot less enemies!
There are times when you are running, your health goes all the way down in seconds, and you are dead before even one enemy appears. Then several seconds later they appear and you actually ran through the enemy zerg! But you didnt even see them.
The culling is worse, we told Anet about it in December, yet they somehow took all those negative feedbacks as positive and brought it back in!
Another thing I noticed today. I could see the shield which encompasses siege during and enemy breakout event at briar; but I was all the way at up between Arah and the sentry below near SW garrison!!!!
So seeing a shield on the other side of the map is more important than an seeing an enemy 5 feet in front of you! Screenshot attached.

It’s a Dell XPS laptop with an i7-2620M @ 2.7GHz processor and 8g of RAM with an Intel HD Graphics card. It’s a little over a year old. It’s a fairly top notch system for a laptop and I run my game on pretty high settings.
