Why is it that some people on this server don’t realize the importance of defending? Yesterday on our borderlands the north supply camp (the only supply camp that supplies our towers and keep) was fully upgraded and had protective siege but was captured because only 3 people actually stayed there to defend (myself included) people I believe to be mentally ill (because of later stupid whispers and comments) told me that why should we defend camps when they are so easy to recapture and we even gain karma in the process. WTF

Sadly, PvE players that are not interested in PvP or contribute to the server can also join WvW to leech karma for their PvE perposes. These are also the same people that jump servers to farm on the winning side.

Perhaps in WvW, karma needs to stop being rewarded, and more badges and silver instead. Makes WvW less grindy, cuts out farmers, and reduces the queue. Triple-win scenario?

Also u suddenly got problems with uncontrollable zerg. The reason of this suddeness is your previous top-3: many of unskilled people transfered to deso for to play on. So, the role of every small guild is less noticeable.
In Aurora glade we have made a unity between ru, fr, italian and scandinavian guilds. We have tactics and global strategy for every single map: stated guilds are in reponse for dedicated map. We re holding 50-100% ofevery battleground during euro peak time without queues. But our huge problem still be eternal battleground. So thats why i adress you there: we need decent players and leaders for eternal battleground in Aurora Glade. Consider Aurora Glade as a server without queues and with decent community if you want to be noticed, apperciated and followed by other guilds.
We can give you free teamapeak3 server or negotiate about closed one.
We re fightning 2 fr servers atm with 2x lead. We are stabilizating online during nights, thats why we can beat their night zergs.
So, leaders and guilds from Desolation, we await you in Aurora Glade to establish control under eternal battleground with short queues.

Desolation is a server of players of many different nations who don’t speak english natively, while the other servers we were up against were all french, and hence communication was MUCH easier there. Do not underestimate the little quirks in translation. For example someone on Desolation wrote “Greenlake is ok”. Now, could be interpreted as 1) It’s ok to go there for attacking/defending, 2) It’s safe to go there now, 3) It’s safe so go elsewhere. Now if you have 3 different players you might see 3 different actions taken in result to this “information” :-p
Now whether this example is good or not, I imagine on a server where everyone natively speaks french the situation is often MUCH more clear and people know much better what they are supposed to do from reading chat.

Well, and night capping. :-p

Had some awesome early morning moments today once we got organized enough to hold out around crag and defend it from the frenchies and their zergs. Just a shame all the night capping bs ruins any competition there might otherwise be but hopefully that’ll calm down as the rankings continue to balance out and the night capping servers end up against each other.

There are no queues anymore on Desolation at almost every time of the day now. Maybe small ones for EB but that’s all.

This morning I instantly entered EB at 10:00 AM, at 11:00 or so I crashed and I reentered after less than 10 minutes.

Sad truth is: WvW population is already sharply dropping on all servers except the top 2 ones or so in each region. Awful design is awful, and nowadays there are simply too many games around to hope people is going to wait months for you to fix your design mistakes.

Especially if they were properly pointed out 3 months before during the first public BWE, and those reports were ignored…

Unfortunately not, as the BWE forum posts were always deleted after the BWE ended.

But I can guarantee you that the problem of “nightcapping” (or whatever you want to call it) was pointed out at them for one simple reason: I was one of the people who posted about it.
I made a thread (after first or second BWE, cannot remember anymore) where I explained what to me were structural game design flaws, and one of those was indeed the fact that whoever had more people at 3:00 AM would automatically win the game with this scoring system. And I wasn’t the only one to point this out, trust me.

But as usual, the devs always think they know more, or that player behavior will fix their mess by itself (it never does, instead it always makes things worse), or that somehow their magical matchmaking system would have created server with identical populations, at every hour, and in groups of 3, to make for balanced, funny games.

That last post gave me an idea, Anet should make the matchmaking consider time-periods when assigning matchups, as in if a server has a constant 350 points in the Midnight to 6AM period server time, it’d get opponents with the same “capabilities”, eg. Nightcappers would face Nightcappers. That’d be a thing to see

I don’t understand why desolation is still coming up as full o nthe server list tbh, there has been no wvw queues this past week and by the looks of things the population has dropped by quite abit.

The pvp has dropped, people just are not Qing, the mindset of alot of players is why should I go to WvW, when all I come up against is a rolling zergball of frenchies, last week there was Qs on most evenings and it was reall fun after a week of boredom V VS and FS, now again we have a nightcapping french server against us and people just dont Queue.

They see there work and effort as pointless when everything is flipped at 3am, and as I said they just meet zergs everywhere and at everytime of the day and night, its boring.
I can count at least 15 1v1/2v2s last week I had, Ive had 0 so far this weekend, the french just roll around in zergballs, never alone or in small grps, they are pve’rs who fight gates and walls.

I dont think the server pop has changed, just the willingness to PVP has.

The funny thing is this week we are against 2x FR servers…

What kind of a brain giving those matchups ? Now all FR’s from one server transfered the better one.

I have enjoyed WvW this week until about 11.30pm UK time and then I just go do something else because that’s when the big french zergest rolls around.

I was just tabbed out sat at the TP in LA and I tabbed back in to check up on the scores and surprise surprise Arborstone own like 95% of the pie chart at the minute.

Hopefully the rest of the week should stabilize because with it being a weekend Arbor have had the added advantage of having the Canadians on a lot more than they can get on during the week.

Join http://tri-gw2.com, The Iron Triangle, we are currently recruiting and are the most active WvW guild. We are mostly on Augury Borderlands atm, we need more soldiers to expand to other borderlands though.

I haven’t been on much for this most recent match up but if there are a number of servers who always win through extensive nightcapping then I imagine eventually they will be top of the pile and playing each other a lot. When that happens we will get some more even match ups, give it some time.

What Laurs said is exactly what is going to happen. very much looking forward to it, but it’s still fun right now. it’s very demanding and it’s such a huge achievement to actually cap some big points and keep them at the moment. IRON get’s it done though!

I am sorry but that is such a defeatist attitude. Yes we cannot compete against the numbers that arborstone throw at us. But you can still enjoy wvw.

I had one of my most enjoyable nights in WVW last night in the Augury Rock borders. It started with Trebuchet battles as Arborstone started testing the defences at Ascalon Hills, squad attacks to take out trebs. beefing up defences at Ascalon hills.

Then Arbs numbers got ridiculous and we became heavily outnumbered with one final aim to defend Deso’s last keep on all maps.

They took the outer doors, they brought down the inner keep door, but even outnumbered by about 3/4 (And the 3 orb buff) to 1 we held them off with some great leadership (and 1 or 2 ballista’s). I am not blowing iron’s trumpet but along with a few pugs (who were great too) we held (until I finally caved and went to bed at 3.30 am uk time anyway). Organisation made all the difference. Squads were being sent out to take supply camps as we generally had none, to grab what supply we could and then retreat, we sent people to ascension bay to force attackers to leave ascalon hills and give the defence some breathing room to get supply and rebuild seige defences, repair doors. We even portalled to the other borderlands and eternal to recruit more people into the defence.

It was what WVW pvp is all about it’s not all about winning, zerging and capturing keeps, supply camps etc. If you had stayed on and joined us on the Augury rock border I guarantee you would of had a great evening as we held off and even made that zerg retreat, for a few hours at least.

Yeah Offski call it what you like, go check DSC forums and see who called for the FIRST Desolation WvW meeting (that was me). My small guild (Attack Fight Kill) contributes on every map we join, while you guys are off bashing Garrison or some crap we’re defending and/or taking supply camps, repairing damage and basically doing everything we can to contribute to the server overall.

The bottom line is that as a small guild playing every night till 5am is not sustainable, most of us are adult’s with a job. Props to IRON and all the bigger guilds, you guys are doing a great job.

No, most of focus wvw guild on AS and AR know each other since daoc.. so it’s no way to they move on the other serv.. If ppl move it’s only the useless leecher.

Easy there fella, no need to be defensive was not being critical was just saying we should not be defeatist. Because we are losing, alot of people on the server seemed to of stopped coming into wvw at the moment, I was just trying to point out that wvw can still be enjoyed if playing defensively rather than aggressively.

Guys we need to do something about defending our captured objectives during the day and night

Just a heads up, I’m not sure what [IRON] are, or what they are about, But Ive seen them on lots of other servers bar deso this week, It would appear they are jumping to ‘winning’ servers when deso is losing.

Are you sure? the people from IRON have been generally nice towards smaller guilds and this thread that I created.

Bear in mind that the guild tags are not unique, so [IRON] on another server may not be the same as the one one desolation. I’d imagine it is probably a pretty popular tag. On desolation it usually refers to a guild called the iron triangle, but I think it is even possible to have multiple guilds on the same server with the same tag (but I might be mistaken on that one).

On the other note: I’m here to formally announce that a new guild will join the fight: Legacy of Raiders, a newly found WvW guild is stepping up and looking for members, our goal is to take lead on one of the Borderlands and hold the keep (and with it, the orb) closest to our spawn, and, if possible, spread to map domination from there. Well, Arborstone has a GG tagged guild, but I think that’s just to taunt our GG guild.

Guild name are unique, but tag isn’t.

Like for [IRON] tag or [SR] you can see this on many serv. There is no taunt.

There are currently ongoing discussions both ingame and outside, about alliances and coordination, involving at least 1-2 major guilds and a few minor ones. As Thorny graciously pointed out, I don’t think it’s a good idea to provide more details about this on a public forum. Speak to the leaders directly.

That being said, the last week’s matchup went bad again and we basically all know the reasons. Arborstone went berzerk capping stuff @ 3am+ when the reset occured and at that time we did not have the numbers to stop them or even slow them down. When we did, it was already too late for 2 reasons :

1) They had a huge point and tally advantage and we could not maintain our numbers, while AS had crews around the clock, 24/7, that would at worst case match our own, best case they would completely overwhelm us.

2) People seeing the weekend score, never bothered to queue for W3.

Basically the reasons why anyone loses on W3, at the moment.

As usual, AR was probably happy to settle for 2nd place and while I do not believe in conspiracy theories or…Canadians :p, I have personally witnessed cases (mostly in the borders, not EB) where both realms were deliberately focusing on Desolation, when there were better and more reasonable tactical choices. This is not a flame, however. Good for them, bad for us. Such is life. We get over it and move on.

Of course, there are a few more minor reasons we lost, that have to do with coordination, like people not reporting attacks and keep/tower statuses, people with tunnel vision, people making the same mistakes over and over again (misplaced siege, getting supplies from anything but camps etc), mindless zerging with no real plan, afking @ spawn while waiting for guild/whatever when we desperately need people defending, guild commanders not willing to work with others, commanders that are empty icons etc. If we want to have any hope of maintaining our rank, much less progressing to the upper tier, we need to overcome these issues. Don’t get me wrong, this is not intended to assign blame (we have enough of that on map and team chat and it needs to STOP NOW, cause it’s not helping anyone) but rather have people think long and hard on what exactly they hope to accomplish by queing for W3. If it’s just badge farming, then we deserve what we get. If it’s something else, we need to do better. We can do better tbh, as illustrated by our relative successes on AR and AS map, when we decided (for once in the week) to mount a counterattack on Wednesday (with Genesis on AS, IRON, LoR and many others on AR).
